What is Version Control?

“Version control, also known as source control, is the practice of tracking and managing changes to software code. Version control systems are software tools that help software teams manage changes to source code over time.” - Atlassian Git Tutorial

Git vs GitHub

Git: The actual tool that handles project history and is maintained on your local machine.

GitHub: A cloud-based hosting service that hosts your git repository online and allows for team collaboration.

Common Git Commands

  • git status: Shows What files have been modified/added/deleted in Repo.
  • git add: Add files to staging area.
  • git commit: Files have been saved to the local Repo.
  • git push: Files have been pushed from local to remote Repo.
  • git pull: Get new changes from the remote Repo.
  • git checkout: Switch/create new branches.
  • git fetch: Grabs branches and commits from remote to local Repo.
