The Marketing Process
Our PESTEL Analysis
- Subsidies for Startups: Many governments provide subsidies and funding programs to support startups. These financial aids can be crucial for the development and growth of a company, especially in its early stages (cf. Hessen Agentur GmbH 2024).
- Assembly Laws and Event Registration Requirements: In many countries, regulations exist for registering gatherings beyond a certain number of participants. For instance, in Germany, events “held outdoors with an undefined number of attendees” must be approved in advance. This could impact the organization of public events via the web app (cf. Federal Ministry of Justice 2020).
- Regulations During Pandemics (e.g., COVID-19 Restrictions): Although COVID-19 regulations are no longer in force, the pandemic demonstrated that governments can quickly introduce measures such as attendance restrictions or bans on gatherings. During such times, the usage of the web app would decline (cf. Federal Ministry of Health 2021).
- Rising Energy Costs: Energy costs for operating servers and data centers can be significant. An increase in electricity prices or unstable energy markets could impact Connect-U’s operational costs, potentially leading to higher user fees or the need to optimize server energy efficiency (cf. Council of the European Union 2024).
- Purchasing Power and Leisure Budgets: The overall economic situation and disposable income influence how much people invest in leisure activities, including events. A recession could negatively affect the use of paid features on Connect-U (cf. Eurostat 2024).
- App Market Growth: The market for apps, particularly social and event-planning apps, continues to grow. There is potential for monetization through advertisements, premium subscriptions, or paid events (cf. Statista 2023).
- Cloud Service Costs: Many startups, including Connect-U, rely on cloud services for data storage and processing. The costs of these services can vary depending on providers and pricing models. Changes in pricing from providers such as AWS, Google Cloud, or Microsoft Azure could directly impact operating expenses (cf. Statista 2024).
- Social Isolation and Digitalization: Many people who move to a new city experience social isolation. This target group often seeks new ways to connect and attend local events. Digital platforms like Connect-U offer solutions. Additionally, loneliness and social isolation are among the most common causes of anxiety (cf. Appinio 2021).
- Demographic Change: The primary target audience comprises young adults, students, and early-career professionals, often relocating to new cities. This age group is tech-savvy and prefers using digital platforms to build social connections and networks (cf. Spiegel 2023).
- Inclusion and Accessibility: An increasing number of users expect social platforms to be designed for accessibility, enabling everyone to participate in events. Connect-U should promote accessible events and ensure that the platform itself is usable by people with disabilities (cf. Leipertz 2023).
- Web Technologies and Mobile-First Approach: As a web app, Connect-U must perform well across platforms (desktop and mobile). Advances in Progressive Web Apps (PWAs) can ensure that Connect-U functions optimally even without a native app and is available offline.
- Geolocation and API Integration: Integrating the Leaflet API or alternative map services is essential for planning and displaying event locations. This feature enhances user convenience by allowing them to view venues and navigate to them directly.
- Security Standards: To protect user privacy, strict security measures, such as SSL encryption and regular security updates, must be implemented (cf. BSI 2024).
- Artificial Intelligence and Event Recommendations: Connect-U could leverage machine learning to provide personalized event recommendations based on users’ preferences and past activities on the platform, enhancing the user experience (cf. Digital Future Magazine 2024).
- Sustainable Events: Many people value environmentally friendly and sustainable events. Connect-U could offer features promoting sustainable event planning, such as digital invitations, waste reduction, or eco-friendly transportation options (cf. BMU 2020).
- Green Hosting: Since Connect-U is a web app, operating in environmentally friendly data centers or using green hosting services could make the platform more sustainable. This could serve as a positive unique selling proposition (cf. Zylinski 2023).
- Integration of Public Transport: Connect-U could offer a feature that helps users navigate to events by providing pre-selected routes via public transportation. This function could encourage eco-friendly travel options while reducing car usage. Implementation: This feature could be realized using the Google Maps API, enabling developers to retrieve public transport route information (cf. Google 2024).
- Data Protection and GDPR: As a platform operating in Europe, Connect-U must comply with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). This includes protecting personal data such as location information, contacts, and chat logs. Users must consent to data collection and processing and be able to delete their data at any time (cf. BMWK 2024).
- Liability for Events: Events organized via Connect-U could entail legal risks, such as accidents during an event. The platform must have clear terms of use and disclaimers to minimize such risks (cf. Huber 2024).
- Image Rights and Copyright: If users upload event images, image rights must be observed. Connect-U should include terms of use to ensure that uploaded images do not infringe on copyright laws (cf. BMJ 2024).
Our SWOT Analysis.
- Focus on Real-Life Encounters and Social Interactions: Connect-U promotes real social interactions and connections, fostering deeper user engagement and loyalty compared to purely virtual platforms.
- Simple Event Organization and Participation: The platform offers a user-friendly interface with features such as geolocation and QR code connections, making it easy to attend events and network.
- Private and Public Events: Users can choose between public and private events, providing a high degree of flexibility and privacy.
- Gamification and Rewind Feature: These features enhance user retention by increasing engagement through rewards and the sharing of memories.
- Dependence on Third-Party Providers: Connect-U relies on external APIs like Google Maps for geolocation, which could lead to technical outages negatively impacting the user experience.

- Limitations Due to Internet Availability: As the platform heavily relies on online functions, regions with poor internet connectivity may face usage restrictions.
- Competitive Pressure: Established platforms like Eventbrite and Meetup pose significant competition, making it challenging to attract users and gain market share.
- Growing Market for Hybrid and Virtual Events: The increasing demand for hybrid and virtual events offers Connect-U opportunities to reach a larger audience through digital formats (cf. Habenicht 2021).
- Partnerships with Companies and Institutions: Collaborations with large organizations or event organizers could enhance visibility and create additional revenue streams (cf. Wilhelm 2018).
- Expansion into International Markets: With the global market for event management software growing, Connect-U could establish a presence in international markets with localized solutions (cf. eventmasterbook – Magazine 2023).
- Focus on Sustainability: Rising demand for eco-friendly events creates opportunities to integrate sustainable features into the platform and attract environmentally conscious users (cf. BMU 2020).
- Technological Dependence: Heavy reliance on technological solutions poses risks of disruptions due to technical issues, cyberattacks, or software errors, which could hinder event execution (cf. Heuzeroth 2024).
- Regulatory Challenges: Changes in legal regulations or data protection requirements could increase operating costs or necessitate platform adjustments (cf. BDO 2024).
- Unpredictable External Factors: Economic crises or pandemics can drastically affect the execution and success of events, leading to lower attendance numbers (cf. Federal Ministry of Health 2021).
- Intense Competition: Competition from established platforms and constant innovation in the event industry present challenges, especially in retaining market share (cf. Meetup 2024).

The target audience for Connect-U, a web app for planning social events, is exclusively based in Germany and primarily consists of young adults aged 20 to 39 years (cf. enbw 2021). A significant portion of this group comprises students or trainees with low income (cf. enbw 2021). In 2024, 46% of the target audience reported experiencing moderate to severe loneliness, with the proportion being slightly higher among women than men (cf. Bertelsmann 2024: 11). Particularly in urban areas, there is a strong desire for social connections, which has intensified following the COVID-19 pandemic (cf. Bertelsmann 2024: 17). This loneliness represents a serious challenge for many young adults, highlighting that Connect-U has the potential to fill a critical gap by promoting social interactions and helping users form new connections and strengthen existing relationships. According to Dr. Anja Langness from the Bertelsmann Foundation, loneliness among young people is a growing issue that must be addressed to improve the overall well-being of this group.
The target audience primarily uses social media to maintain friendships and stay in touch with their social circles (cf. Vodafone Stiftung 2018). The most common platforms are WhatsApp, Instagram, and Snapchat, where they actively communicate and maintain social relationships. They are online daily, highly tech-savvy, and possess strong technological skills (cf. Federal Statistical Office 2020a,b; VuMA 2019a,b). In 2020, adults spent an average of 215 minutes per day on apps, while mobile web usage was only 25 minutes (cf. eMarketer 2020). This trend underscores the growing importance of mobile applications for Connect-U’s target audience, who increasingly rely on digital tools for planning and managing their social activities.
The majority of Connect-U’s users can be classified into the expeditive, adaptive-pragmatic, and hedonistic Sinus-Milieus. These groups are technology-oriented, often reside in urban areas, actively seek new social connections and experiences, and increasingly use digital tools to make their lives more efficient and exciting (cf. Sinus Institute 2024). The app provides them with a platform to plan events and participate in activities tailored to their interests and needs.
Additionally, the social needs of this age group are closely tied to their emotional well-being. Loneliness can negatively impact mental health, emphasizing the importance of Connect-U. The app could serve as a key tool for reducing social isolation and fostering a sense of community. Studies have shown that regular social interactions can enhance happiness and life satisfaction (cf. Bertelsmann 2024).

For the competitive analysis of the event planning app “Connect-U”, five competitors were identified. These competitors are also active in the event industry and allow users to participate in or manage events. The platforms analyzed include: “MeetUp”, “Meet5”, “meinestadt.de”, “Doodle”, and “Eventbrite”.
The analysis focuses on functional aspects such as filter options for finding suitable events and the ability to create events. Additionally, the presentation of events, their detail views, and the color schemes used by each provider were considered.
The “MeetUp” website offers a wide range of filter options. Users can filter by specific dates, types of events (e.g., online, indoor, or outdoor), distance, and categories for more precise searches. However, event creation is only available to users with a premium account. The event presentation is clear and organized in a list format, with each list item containing sufficient details and notes about the number of available spots. The detailed event view provides additional information, including a comprehensive event description. Users can also see participant lists, with hosts highlighted. The color scheme of MeetUp includes clean white, apricot red, and cyan blue, creating a minimalist and fresh look. The contrasts are carefully chosen, offering a harmonious effect (cf. MeetUp 2024).
“meinestadt.de” features a specialized filtering system, allowing users to choose an area of interest and refine their search within the selected category. However, event creation is not available for regular users, as events are typically organized by external institutions. Event presentation is displayed in a 3xN matrix with cards containing minimal information such as location, category, and organizer. The event detail view allows users to toggle between tabs for description, pricing, or directions. The color scheme combines white with dark and light shades of yellow, resulting in a harmonious design that appeals primarily to older users (cf. meinestadt.de 2024).
On “Meet5”, users can search events using filter options, which allow filtering by specific categories, though this is restricted to premium members. Event creation requires users to upload a profile picture first. Once completed, users can configure their events with options like participant numbers, private/public settings, and events exclusive to women. The event presentation is displayed on the web platform in a 3xN matrix format with cards containing titles, dates, participant numbers, and host information. Events are labeled as open or private, making them highly navigable for users. The event detail view includes a large map showing the event location, a detailed description, and a prominently displayed card summarizing key information such as date, location, participants, and registration options. The color scheme features a combination of white and apricot red, with harmonious contrasts. However, gray backgrounds on event cards can reduce text readability (cf. Meet5 2024).
“Doodle” lacks a filtering function or the ability to search for events, as users can only join events through invitations. To create an event, users need an account. They can then configure events for groups or individuals, specifying details such as title, description, date, location, and a custom question, which adds a personal touch. Events are invitation-only, and a general event presentation is not available. The event detail page is concise, showing only the essential information, including the custom question. Users can also accept alternative dates if offered by the host. Events can be added directly to calendars. The color scheme includes cold tones with white, dark green, and light blue, resulting in a clinical and impersonal feel (cf. Doodle 2024).
“Eventbrite” offers extensive filtering options, including categories, prices, languages, and currencies, enabling users to find highly specific events. Event creation is comprehensive, allowing users to choose between quick event creation or using the event tool. The tool provides additional features like marketing options, financial planning, and order management, making it more suitable for large-scale events. Event presentation varies by category but is mostly displayed as cards containing titles, dates, locations, and prices. The event detail page starts with a large image and title, followed by a ticket purchase option. Further down, users find detailed information, a description, and tags. The color scheme features a white background with warm accent colors like orange, creating an inviting and harmonious aesthetic (cf. Eventbrite 2024).
An extensive filtering functionality is essential for users to find specific events. This feature should be accessible directly from the homepage and allow filtering by categories, location, date, and tags. Free-text search should also be included for easier discovery of unique events, without requiring a premium membership as on Meet5.
For event creation, users should be able to tag public events and specify participant limits. Creating events should require an account. Basic details such as title, date, and description must be included. Location information should allow for radius settings to protect private details. Private events should be shareable within the website via invitation, similar to Doodle. The event creation process for users should differ in complexity from that for businesses, as exemplified by Eventbrite.
Event presentation should utilize cards displaying key information like title, remaining spots, location, category, and an image, similar to Eventbrite or Meet5.
The event detail view should include all information provided during creation, with links to the host and a map showing the location. Users should be able to favorite events and register directly from this page.
For the color scheme, warm colors such as yellow or orange should be used to create a welcoming and friendly atmosphere, similar to the designs of Meetup and Eventbrite.

A widespread sticker campaign will be conducted in German university cities as part of a guerilla marketing strategy to increase awareness of Connect-U and directly reach the target audience. This low-budget strategy relies on creative and attention-grabbing advertising methods to surprise and intrigue the target audience in their everyday environment. Stickers will be placed in high-traffic areas and feature catchy slogans highlighting the app's advantages in event planning. Example slogans include:
- "Connect-U: The hassle-free planner for your barbecue night."
- "Avoid the 10th WhatsApp group. Get Connect-U."
Each sticker will include a QR code directing users to Connect-U's landing page, where they can explore the app and sign up immediately. The QR code amplifies the surprise and curiosity by providing a quick and easy interaction method.
The stickers will be distributed through two channels:
- Direct distribution by the Connect-U team: Stickers will be handed out personally in student neighborhoods, universities, and popular meeting spots, allowing direct interaction with the target group.
- Collaboration with student organizations: Sticker packages will be sent to university departments and student associations, hoping they will embrace the product and voluntarily distribute stickers among students.
This guerilla marketing strategy aims to boost Connect-U's visibility and achieve rapid user adoption by addressing the target audience directly in a relevant environment, such as universities.
To enhance the reach and awareness of Connect-U, a combined referral marketing and social media strategy will be implemented. Influencers and content creators from the university and student sectors will serve as advertising partners, sharing authentic testimonials and personal experiences with the app. They will directly address their large and relevant followings on platforms such as Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube.
The social media campaign includes:
- Short Videos and Tutorials: Influencers will create concise and engaging videos, demonstrating the app's usability and features step-by-step. These videos will showcase event planning in action, providing users with a quick and intuitive introduction.
- Interactive Content and Challenges: To actively engage their followers, influencers will launch challenges and polls. For example, they might start an "Organize Your Next Event" challenge on TikTok, encouraging followers to plan and share their events using Connect-U. Hashtags and tags will boost the reach of these challenges, building a strong community around the app.
- Exclusive Promo Codes: Each influencer will have a unique promo code, giving their followers access to exclusive features or rewards on Connect-U. This will motivate users to download and try the app.
By combining influencer endorsements with targeted social media marketing, the strategy will feel particularly authentic, as the target audience trusts these influencers and relates to their everyday lives. This approach ensures quick and wide-reaching adoption, establishing Connect-U as the go-to event planning app for students.
This strategy will be activated after the product has been on the market for one year.
Once a certain level of Connect-U adoption is achieved in a city (e.g., a percentage of the population), a partnership marketing program will be launched to collaborate with local venues that host regular events. The goal is to promote Connect-U alongside these venues and establish the platform as a central hub for event planning. Connect-U Showcase Packages will be sent to selected locations.
-
Pre-printed Sticker: Inspired by popular review portals like Tripadvisor, the sticker reads: ": Check out the events happening here on Connect-U."
The sticker includes a QR code directing venue operators to create a Connect-U Business Account, facilitating their participation in the partnership.
-
Brochures: These explain the functionalities and benefits of Connect-U, providing key information for both event organizers and attendees.
Once the business account is created, the same QR code directs users to the venue's profile page on Connect-U. The sticker thus becomes a central advertising tool, offering direct access to the venue's current events and making them easily accessible to users.
This partnership marketing strategy not only increases Connect-U's local visibility but also establishes a direct connection between event venues and users, solidifying the platform as an indispensable event planner in the region.
Native in-feed ads will be integrated into the event feed, which serves as the central search page for events. These ads will visually match the style of event entries, seamlessly blending into the feed and minimizing disruption to the user experience. This approach increases the likelihood of interaction, as the ads can be perceived as valuable event suggestions.
Relevant advertisements will appear during the event creation process, offering services or products useful for event planning:
- Between Steps: After completing the initial customization page, a brief advertisement is displayed, potentially featuring local partners, decoration providers, or catering services, adding value for event planners.
- Sponsored Suggestions at Completion: Directly below the final "Save" button, a section for "Sponsored Suggestions" will appear, recommending services relevant to the event category or location, such as photographers for birthday parties or rental services for outdoor events. These suggestions aim to provide inspiration while minimally impacting the user experience.
Personalized banner ads will be displayed on event pages for attendees. These ads will be based on user interests and past participation to maximize relevance. The strategic placement on frequently visited event pages increases page views while offering users meaningful content.
Connect-U Business provides companies with an ad-free platform to promote their events. Businesses can target their audience effectively by gaining prioritized visibility in event listings. This option allows companies to boost attendance without competing with feed ads.
