Outfitted with state-of-the-art instruments for Gas Chromatography - Mass Spectrometry, Liquid Chromatography - Mass Spectrometry, microbial identification, polymer analysis, and protein analysis.
The following instruments are available in the Instrument Lab for user to work with. Additional information is accessible on each instrument's page. All users wishing to use instruments must complete the required training and be checked off by a Peer Leader before using any instruments/equipment.
| Name | Description | Image |
|---|---|---|
| MALDI ToF Mass Spectrometer | An analytical instrument used to rapidly identify, characterize, and image biological and synthetic molecules. Commonly used for microbial identification, polymer analysis, quality control if food processing, and biomolecule analsysis | ![]() |
| Gas Chromatograph Mass Spectrometer with FID (GC-MS) | An analytical instrument used to separate, identify, and quantify volatile and semi-volatile organic compounds within complex mixtures | ![]() |
| Liquid Chromatograph Mass Spectrometer – Single Quad (LC-MS) | An analytical instrument used to separate, identify, and quantify chemical components with COMPLEX mixtures. Best suited for when molecular identification is needed for unknown or complex samples | ![]() |
| Liquid Chromatography with Ultraviolet and Fluorescence Detection (LC-UV/RFU) | Scientific instrument that is used to separate, identify, and quantify the components in a chemical mixture. The instrument relies on analyzing differences in how molecules absorb UV or visible light to detect different types of environmental pollutants, foods, or biological samples. Ideally suited when compounds are known | ![]() |
| Energy Dispersive X-ray Fluorescence Spectrometer (Elemental Analyzer) | This scientific instrument is used for non-destructive elemental analysis - identifying and measuring elements (from Carbon to Uranium) in solid, liquid, or powder samples | ![]() |
| Microplate Reader (Fluorescence and UV) | A versatile scientific instruments designed for high-throughput screening and is capable of detecting and quantifying biological, chemical, or physical samples | ![]() |
| UV-Vis Spectrophotometer (Nanodrop) | A micro-volume UV-Vis spectrophotometer, requiring only 1-2 microliters of sample for analysis. used for assessing sample purity, quantifying the concentration of purified proteins, characterizing general compounds, and more | ![]() |
| Centrifugal Concentrator | Piece of lab equipment used to remove solvents and concentrate/buffer biological samples like proteins, DNA, or RNA | ![]() |
| Rotoevaporator | Equipment used to efficiently and gently remove volatile solvents from samples by evaporation. Commonly used for solvent recovery, concentrating non-volatile mixtures, and drying samples | ![]() |
| Benchtop Refrigerated Centrifuge | A benchtop centrifuge is used to separate substances of different densities within liquid samples. Refrigeration prevents heat-sensitive samples from degrading or denaturing | ![]() |
| Benchtop Centrifuge | A compact piece of laboratory equipment used to separate substances of varying densities | |
| Freeze Dryer | Lab equipment used to remove water or solvents from heat-sensitive samples through sublimation | ![]() |
