Tabbin v2.2.3
Tabbin v2.2.3 - your note order stops resetting
Three fixes for bugs that shipped since 2.2.1. None of them touched your notes, and nothing needs migrating.
Fixed
- Your tile order no longer resets when you restart. Dragging tiles into an order looked like it worked, then went back to sorted-by-recently-edited on the next launch. The order was being saved and then immediately re-sorted away on the way out. It sticks now.
- Creating a note while another note was saving could lose one of them. Every other action was already serialized through a write queue; creating a note was calling the file writer directly and skipping it. It is on the queue like the rest.
- Dragging a tile out of the dock no longer throws an internal error. The note still opened where you dropped it, but the code after that point silently failed, so the drag highlight could get stuck. Your tile order and note windows are unaffected.
Removed
- The "Release to open" drag hint. v2.2.1's release notes said this hint followed your cursor while you dragged a tile. It never did, in any released version - the dock is its own small window, so the hint had nowhere to go. It has been removed rather than half-fixing it. Dragging a tile out still opens the note exactly where you drop it.
Install
Windows-only, x64. The setup file installs Tabbin and receives updates automatically.
- Download Tabbin-Setup.exe (about 68 MB).
- Windows will warn you the publisher is unknown. Tabbin is not code signed, so this is expected. Click More info, then Run anyway.
- Pick where to install it, finish the installer, and launch it.
Not wanting to install anything? Tabbin-Portable.exe runs straight from the folder, but cannot update itself.
Notes
- No data format change. Your existing notes, colours, and dock settings carry over untouched.
- Auto-update applies to the installed build only.
- Full notes in the README.

Tabbin v2.2.2
Tabbin v2.2.2 — keyboard shortcuts, and findable notes
Editor keyboard shortcuts, and a Save location row that tells you where your
notes actually are. No data format changed.
Added
- Align left / centre / right —
Ctrl+L,Ctrl+E,Ctrl+R - Strikethrough —
Ctrl+Alt+S, which has no native browser binding - Indent and outdent —
TabandShift+Tabinside a list. Outside a list
Tabstill moves focus out of the note, as it always did. - Automatic lists — type
1.or-at the start of a block to turn it
into a numbered or bulleted list. Typing the marker inside an existing list
does not nest a new one. - Open the save folder — a button that reveals where notes are stored,
separate from the control that changes it.
Bold, italic and underline were already handled by the browser's own shortcuts
and are unchanged.
Changed
- Clear all notes now uses a trash can instead of an X.
- The three header controls are the same size. Search was 34px against the
new-note button's 30px, with a different corner radius, so the glyphs did not
read as a set. All three are 30px with an 8px radius, and the expanded search
field matches.
Fixed
- Settings showed the settings icon as a brightness glyph. It was a bare
ring plus eight short radial strokes, which at 16px is indistinguishable from a
sun icon. It is now a toothed cog outline with a centre bore. - Save location read "Unknown location". The settings panel painted once
before the configuration arrived, wrote the placeholder, and nothing repainted
it afterwards. - Save location read "Loading…" forever after changing it. The read and write
config handlers returned different shapes, and the renderer merges whatever it
receives over its own config — so a response with no path in it erased the path
it already had. Both handlers now return the same shape. - Save location showed "notes.json". The path is the notes file, so taking
its last segment gave the filename rather than the folder. It now shows the
directory, clipping from the left so the folder name stays visible on a long
path.
Notes
- Auto-update still applies to the installed build only; the portable executable
cannot replace itself. - Tabbin is not code signed, so Windows SmartScreen may warn you when installing
or downloading an update.

Tabbin v2.2.1
Tabbin v2.2.1 — back to classic, and drag out to open
The dock goes back to the classic coloured-note look, drops to two appearances,
and a tile can now be dragged out of the dock to open.
No data format changed, so upgrading preserves your existing notes and settings.
Added
- Drag a tile out of the dock to open that note, where it was released. A
"Release to open" hint follows the cursor while you drag. Released back inside
the dock it is still a reorder, so the existing drag-to-reorder is untouched.
Works from either screen edge.
Changed
- The dock has two appearances instead of three.
classic— coloured note tiles that expand on hover. Previouslyclear.glass— the same cards floating without a panel behind them. Previously
bare.- The near-opaque panel mode is gone. It had no successor in user feedback,
which asked for the classic look back.
- Note windows follow the dock's appearance. Classic notes open as a solid
sheet of the note colour with dark text; glass notes keep the dark window. - Settings offers Classic and Glass.
Fixed
- Dragging a tile out of the dock did nothing. The bounds test lived in the
renderer, comparing drag coordinates against the dock's own rect — but once
the cursor leaves the dock window, Chromium stops delivering drag events and
clamps the coordinates to the window, so no point outside was ever visible
there. The decision now happens in the main process, which reads the true
cursor position and compares it against the dock's real bounds. A window
dropped on a second monitor opens on that monitor. - The right edge stopped mirroring after the mode rename. Two rules were
compound selectors,.dock.right.clear, and renaming the plain.dock.clear
selector never matched them, so they silently stopped applying and notes grew
left-to-right again. - Active formatting was invisible in classic mode. Bold, italic and
strikethrough were drawn in the note colour, which on a classic note window is
the colour of the sheet they sit on. The glyph now follows the page's ink
colour, so it darkens on the light sheet. - Toolbar borders, separators and hover fills were white on the classic
sheet, where they read as dirt rather than as surfaces. - The note body ignored the classic appearance because its colour was
hardcoded instead of following the page's ink token.
Note storage, the note editor, auto-update and the settings panel are unchanged
apart from the mode rename.
Notes
- A
dockBgfrom 2.1.0 or earlier is migrated on first launch rather than
reset, so you keep the appearance you chose. - Auto-update still applies to the installed build only; the portable executable
cannot replace itself. - Tabbin is not code signed, so Windows SmartScreen may warn you when installing
or downloading an update.

Tabbin v2.1.0
Tabbin v2.1.0 — A dock you can configure
The dock gains a choice of appearances, a settings panel, and right-edge
docking. The note design itself is unchanged from v2.0.0, so no data format
moved — upgrading preserves your existing notes and settings.
Note
If you installed v1.0.1 or earlier, download the installer below. Only
v1.0.1 and later can self-update, and this release reaches existing installs
through the normal update feed.
Added
- Three dock appearances, switchable in Settings:
- Clear — no panel; coloured note tiles that expand on hover. The default.
- Glass — the v2.0.0 near-opaque panel behind glass cards.
- Bare — the same glass cards with no panel behind them.
- Settings panel, behind the dock menu:
- Dock side — left or right edge.
- Dock background — clear, glass or bare.
- Auto-hide — tuck the dock away when you move off it.
- Dock width — compact (268px, the default) or roomy (320px).
- Launch Tabbin on Startup — registers with Windows as you toggle it, and
is reconciled against the real registration on launch, so an entry removed
in Task Manager does not leave a stale "on" in the UI. - Save location — shows the folder your notes are written to, with a
folder picker; changing it migrates existing notes. - Clear all notes — deletes every note, after confirmation.
- Right-edge docking. Notes grow leftward away from the screen edge, the
colour spine swaps to the trailing side, and the header and note count align
to that edge. - Overflow menu in the header, holding Settings, Hide dock and Exit.
Changed
- The dock is content-sized and vertically centred rather than filling the
screen edge to edge. It shows six clear tiles or four glass/bare cards and
scrolls beyond that; the two counts are chosen so the dock stays within a few
pixels of the same height when you switch appearance. - The header is three glyphs: a search toggle, add, and the menu. Search is
opt-in and expands in place with the magnifier inside the field. Click the
glyph again or pressEscapeto close it;Ctrl Kstill opens it. - Clear tiles are shorter — 62px to 52px collapsed, 104px to 88px expanded,
with the gap between tiles reduced from 10px to 6px. - Send feedback and the version number moved out of the dock footer into
settings, leaving the note count alone at the bottom. - The dock scrollbar is hidden. The column still scrolls by wheel and
keyboard. - Default dock width is 268px (compact), down from 320px.
- The hide arrow flips to point at the edge the dock tucks into.
Fixed
- Settings rendered horizontally, off both edges of the panel. Four rows
were missing a closing</div>, so each nested inside the previous one — and
because a row is a flex container, they laid out side by side. - The dock stayed full height no matter how many notes you had. The renderer
measured its note list before the configuration and notes had loaded, so the
window was sized for an empty list and that small value was cached. Nothing
re-ran the layout afterwards. - Right-edge docking looked identical to left-edge. The
rightclass was
toggled onto the dock from the start, but no CSS rule referenced it, so the
mirror simply did not exist. - A dropped brace could silently blank the whole dock. A missing
}in the
renderer is a parse error that renders nothing and throws nothing. The test
suite now parses the renderer and checks stylesheet and markup balance.
Notes
- Auto-update still applies to the installed build only; the portable executable
cannot replace itself. - Tabbin is not code signed, so Windows SmartScreen may warn you when installing
or downloading an update.

Tabbin v2.0.0
What's new in v2.0.0
A frosted-glass redesign, a real Settings panel, and three fixes found while building them.
Settings (opens from the ⚙ icon in the dock — same window, not a new one)
- Dock side — Left or Right. Fixes the conflict reported in issue #1 with vertical browser tabs on the left.
- Auto-hide — keep the dock out of the way, or pin it open.
- Dock width — Compact or Roomy.
- Save location — pick the folder
notes.jsonis written to. The panel shows the live path. Choosing a folder moves your notes there; an unwritable or relative path is rejected rather than silently breaking later saves. - Clear all notes — backs up
notes.jsonfirst, then wipes and closes open windows.
Fixes
- Note window corners are transparent. The window had an opaque native background that filled the area outside the rounded cut, so corners read as a black wedge. The window is now genuinely transparent and the desktop shows through.
- Typing ghosting and white-box flashes in notes are gone. The save round-trip was rewriting the editor mid-repaint; the renderer now skips its own echo.
- The dock no longer blanks. A variable used in the renderer existed only in the main process, which threw before the first render and took out notes, search and settings at once.
Upgrading
Settings and data are preserved — config.json and notes.json carry over.
If you were on 1.0.1, note colours are re-tinted once onto the new frosted palette.

Portable builds cannot update themselves — install Tabbin-Setup.exe if you want the updater.
Tabbin v1.0.1 - Auto-update fixes
Tabbin v1.0.1 — Auto-update Fixes
A maintenance release that makes auto-update actually work. If you installed
Tabbin-Setup.exe for v1.0.0 or earlier, you should receive this update
automatically. If you are still on v1.0.0, nothing has been notifying you — see
"Upgrading" below.
Fixed
- You were never told about updates. The updater was wired up in the main
process, but no window was listening for its events, and downloading was
disabled. An available update was found and then silently thrown away.
Updates now download in the background and install the next time you quit
Tabbin. - Updates found while Tabbin was starting were lost. The updater now keeps a
state snapshot that the dock both listens for and reads on load. - The download progress bar could disappear mid-download if a check happened
to run between "update found" and "download finished". Tabbin-Portable.exeno longer tries to update itself. A portable build
runs from a temporary folder and cannot be updated in place, so instead of
failing confusingly it now shows a one-time note pointing you at the installer.- Pre-release builds can no longer overwrite the stable update feed. The
update channel is now declared explicitly rather than relied upon by default.
Added
- A status row in the dock: update available, download progress, "Restart to
update", and a retry option if a check fails. - Update checks now run at launch, every 6 hours, and when your system resumes
from sleep. Previously only once at launch. update.login Tabbin's application data folder. Packaged Windows builds
discard the updater's console output, which made diagnosing update problems
impossible.
Upgrading
If you are on v1.0.0, v1.0.0 could not notify you of this release. Download
Tabbin-Setup.exe from the releases page and install it over your existing copy —
your notes and settings are preserved.
Notes
- Auto-update applies to the installed (
Tabbin-Setup.exe) build only. The
portable executable has no way to replace itself. - Tabbin is not code signed, so Windows SmartScreen may warn you when installing
or downloading an update. Signing is planned for a future release.
