VarMusic 1.1.9

@Varixxl Varixxl released this 26 Oct 02:15

Omarchy Music is now VarMusic

Same app, new name. Your music, playlists, logins and settings stay where they were, and updates carry on as before. On Windows, the Start menu and desktop shortcuts are renamed.

What's new

  • Show what you're playing on Discord (Windows and Linux). Like Spotify, your Discord profile shows "Listening to VarMusic" with the song, its artists, its cover and how far in it is, plus buttons for friends to play the song on its service or to get VarMusic. When you pause, it goes away. It works with the Discord app and with clients like Vesktop. Turn it off with the Discord switch in the accounts menu (☰). Discord's own "Share your detected activities" setting has to be on.

Updating

  • From 1.1.3 on: pick Update in the accounts menu (☰). Opening the menu checks for it.
  • From 1.1.0 to 1.1.2: pick Update in the accounts menu (☰). If it isn't there, close the app and open it again.
  • From 1.0.0, or a debug build on Android: install this one by hand, as described in the 1.1.0 notes.

What's new

  • Artists tab. Every artist you listen to, with their picture. An artist's page now has their picture and bio (from Wikipedia or Genius), Play and Shuffle, and their songs, most played first if you like.
  • Visualizer tab. Bars that move with the music.
  • Auto EQ. Search AutoEq's corrections for almost any headphones, or let the app spot the ones you're using. Each output remembers its own.
  • Genius annotations. In the lyrics as written, the lines Genius has notes on are marked. Click or tap one to read its note.
  • Share Wrapped. Every slide can be saved as a picture or shared, not only the last one. On a phone, it goes straight to Instagram, Facebook or any app; on a computer the picture is copied, ready to paste into a post.
  • Moods. Each song gets a mood (Last.fm's tags, or Chartmetric with a token of yours). Music › Moods has a playlist for each, and the DJ can play to your mood.
  • Stats. Most played adds your Spotify history (from Spotify's data download) to your Last.fm plays, without counting a play twice.
  • Pictures and covers. Pick an artist's picture or an album's cover from Google (with a key of yours), Genius or Wikipedia, or from a file. A new cover is written into your downloaded songs.
  • Edit tags of your songs by hand, delete songs (after asking), and play any song faster or slower, with or without keeping its pitch.
  • Playlist import report. After importing an .m3u8, the songs that weren't found are listed with the reason. Look for them on YouTube Music, Tidal, Apple Music or Spotify, all at once or one at a time, and they go into the playlist where they were.
  • Search as you type, sort a playlist's songs, Local in the source bar for your own music, and library folders to group playlists from any service.
  • Shuffle is truly random, and repeat-all shuffles again each time round.
  • Desktop: Shift+click picks every song from the one you last ticked.

Notes

  • Android: tags and covers can only be written to songs the app downloaded. Deleting songs other apps saved needs Android 11 or newer. The Visualizer asks for the microphone permission, which Android requires to read the app's own sound; nothing is recorded.
  • Google pictures need a Custom Search key and engine ID of yours (Settings in the accounts menu). Without them, pictures come from Genius and Wikipedia.

What's new

  • Desktop runs as smoothly as the phone; Android Wrapped gets week and month tabs (#3, thanks @Radon999)

All the changes: v1.1.6...v1.1.7

Updating

  • Pick Update in the accounts menu (☰). Opening the menu checks for it (from 1.1.3; older versions check when they start).
  • From 1.0.0, or a debug build on Android: install this one by hand, as described in the 1.1.0 notes.

What's new

  • Downloads are much faster. Download saves three songs at a time, and fetches the pieces of each hi-res song several at once. On a phone, a playlist went from about ten seconds a song to about one. On Windows, Linux and Android.
  • Downloads say how they went. When a Download finishes, a message says how many songs were saved in FLAC, which ones aren't on Tidal in lossless, and why any failed.
  • Download on every playlist and album (desktop). YouTube Music, Tidal, Apple Music and Spotify playlist and album pages have a Download button, as your own playlists already did.

Fixed

  • Android: YouTube Music songs never downloaded. Download on a YouTube Music playlist saved nothing: every YouTube song failed before it reached Tidal, and no message said so. They now download in FLAC like everything else.
  • Download skipped songs it had missed before. Songs Tidal hadn't matched were skipped for a week, even when you pressed Download. Pressing Download now tries every song again.
  • Android: songs that failed when Tidal was busy. When Tidal answers "too many requests", the app now waits a moment and tries again instead of skipping the song.

Updating

  • From 1.1.3 to 1.1.5: pick Update in the accounts menu (☰).

What's new

  • The phone's volume buttons control the desktop. While the phone is the desktop's remote, its volume buttons turn the desktop's volume up and down (in steps of 5%), and the phone shows the level. Android's volume panel shows and sets the desktop's volume too. The desktop needs 1.1.5 as well; with an older one the buttons change the phone's own volume as before.
  • Wrapped for a week or a month. Wrapped has Week, Month, Year and All time tabs, and a picker for the last 12 weeks or months. A week or a month shows your plays day by day, and a week, month or year compares your plays with the same stretch before it. There's more detail on each slide, and a full-screen mode. omarchy-music wrapped week and omarchy-music wrapped month open them from the command line. Thanks to @Radon999.

Fixed

  • Windows: an update that rolled back. If the app, mpv or ffmpeg was still running when the installer started, a file in use made the update roll back. The installer now waits up to 20 seconds for the old copy to quit, then ends it, and writes a log to %TEMP%\OmarchyMusic-Update.log. Thanks to @Radon999.

Updating

  • From 1.1.3 or 1.1.4: pick Update in the accounts menu (☰).

What's new

  • The DJ plays your own playlists, folders and albums. Tap DJ on a playlist's or an album's page, or pick From on the DJ screen: everything (as before), all your music, one of your music folders or a folder inside one (an album folder, say), one of your playlists, or on the desktop any folder you choose. The DJ then plays only those songs, in sets of your favourites among them, ones you haven't played yet, a few by one artist, ones you haven't heard in a while, and a mix. Once it has played them all it goes round again, without repeating a song that's still coming up. Asking it for something looks in those songs first. On Windows, Linux and Android. While the phone is the desktop's remote, the desktop's DJ can play the phone's own playlists and folders.

Fixed

  • Windows: the rest of the lag. Every song change, and every song saved while downloading or syncing, rebuilt all the song lists, even ones you couldn't see, and sent the Music tab back to the top. Now a song change only moves the "now playing" mark, a download updates its own row, and lists you can't see wait until you open them. Long lists also load their rows a few at a time, so scrolling doesn't stutter, and tabs switch without a fade. With 3,000 songs, a song change went from 50 ms to 3 ms.

Updating

  • From 1.1.3: pick Update in the accounts menu (☰).

What's new

  • A DJ, like Spotify's. DJ in the Music tab plays sets of six songs, each started with a line from the DJ: what you've had on repeat, new songs from Tidal's and YouTube Music's radios, throwbacks you haven't played in a while, deep cuts of artists you play, your top genre and more like what's playing. With Last.fm connected it knows your whole history, otherwise it uses what you've played in the app. A new set is added before the last one runs out. Switch it up starts a different kind of set, and the box under it asks the DJ for something: a mood ("something chill"), a decade ("2010s"), a genre ("house") or an artist. On Windows, Linux and Android. While the phone is the desktop's remote, its DJ runs the desktop's.
  • Update is always a tap away. The accounts menu (☰) always shows the version with Check, and looks for a new one each time it opens. Before, an app that was left open could take up to 12 hours to offer a new version.

Fixed

  • Windows: lag when moving around. Long song lists (a big music folder, a long queue) built every row at once, so the window froze each time one opened. Rows now load as you scroll, so opening a list is instant.
  • Android: an update that never installed. If you left the app while an update was downloading, Android dropped its "install this update?" question and nothing happened. The question now waits and comes up when you're back in the app, or tap Install in the accounts menu.
  • Android: clearer errors from the desktop. When the desktop turns down a command (for example, an older desktop app that can't play the phone's songs), the phone now says why, and when to update the desktop app.

Updating

  • From 1.1.0 to 1.1.2: pick Update in the accounts menu (☰). If it isn't there yet, close the app and open it again: these versions only check when they start and every 12 hours. From 1.1.3 on, opening the menu checks.
  • From 1.0.0, or a debug build on Android: install this one by hand, as described in the 1.1.0 notes.

@github-actions github-actions released this 25 Oct 19:44

What's new

  • Search where you choose. A menu next to the search bar picks Tidal, YouTube Music or Your music (your downloads and the songs in your folders). Results show the artists and albums that match above the songs: tap an artist for their page, or an album for its songs. A pasted link still opens on its own service. Without Tidal connected, a Tidal search goes to YouTube Music. On every version: Windows, Linux and Android.
  • Import .m3u8 playlists. Import a playlist (.m3u8) under the Music tab's Playlists, for example a playlist exported from Poweramp or foobar2000. Each song is the file the playlist names (or a file of the same name), else the same song among yours, else the closest match on Tidal (YouTube Music without Tidal), by name and length. The playlist is named after the file, and a message says how many songs weren't found.
  • Most played from Last.fm. With Last.fm connected, the Music tab's Most played shows your most scrobbled songs from anywhere, not only what you played in this app. Songs you have play from your copy, and the rest from Tidal.
  • Play the phone's songs on the desktop (Android). While the phone controls the desktop, songs that are only on the phone play on the desktop too. The desktop streams them from the phone over your network.

Fixed

  • Android 1.1.1 kept offering itself as an update. After updating to 1.1.1, the app still called itself 1.1.0, so it offered 1.1.1 again after every install. It now reads its version from Android. Update to 1.1.2 once from the accounts menu (☰) and the prompts stop.

Updating

  • From 1.1.0 or 1.1.1: pick Update in the accounts menu (☰). The apps check for it at start and every 12 hours.
  • From 1.0.0, or a debug build on Android: install this one by hand, as described in the 1.1.0 notes.

What's new

  • Songs fall back whatever goes wrong on Tidal. Before, a song only moved on to Tidal's AAC or YouTube Music when Tidal had no FLAC of it. If Tidal failed any other way (a song blocked in your country, an expired login, a network error), the song was skipped. Now every Tidal failure moves on to the next option, and a song is skipped only when YouTube Music can't play it either. Keep mode also streams a song when saving it fails. On every version: Windows, Linux and Android.
  • Choose your music folders (Android). A new folder chooser you can browse: go into folders, tick the ones you want, and see how many songs each holds. Open it from Choose folders in the Music tab or Folders in the accounts menu. If the app can't see your music yet, it asks for access, or opens the app's settings once Android stops asking.
  • Spotify history in Wrapped (Android). History in the accounts menu imports the zip from Spotify's data download (spotify.com/account/privacy, the extended streaming history or the past year's). With Spotify connected, your last plays come in each time the app starts. Wrapped counts a play Last.fm already has once and adds the ones it missed. It also works without Last.fm. Nothing is sent to Last.fm.
    • If Spotify was already connected, disconnect and connect it again once so the app may read your recent plays.
  • Your downloads come back after a reinstall (Android). Songs the app saved to Music/Omarchy Music/ stay on the phone when the app is uninstalled, but the new install didn't show them. Now they show in the Music tab as your own songs.

Updating

  • From 1.1.0: pick Update in the accounts menu (☰). The apps check for it at start and every 12 hours.
  • From 1.0.0, or a debug build on Android: install this one by hand, as described in the 1.1.0 notes.

What's new

  • Lock screen and notification player (Android). What's playing shows in the notification shade and on the lock screen. While the phone is the desktop's remote, they show the desktop's song and control it.
  • Lossy fallback. Songs Tidal has no FLAC of now play instead of being skipped: Tidal's AAC (320 kbps) first, then YouTube Music's own audio. The mark by the controls says AAC or Opus when that happens. Without Tidal connected, everything streams from YouTube Music. Downloads are still FLAC only.
  • Sort your music. The Music tab's All sorts by title, artist, album (grouped, and tapping an artist opens their page) or date added.
  • Updates in the app. From this version on, each app tells you when a new release is out. Pick Update in the accounts menu (☰) to install it.
  • New icon.
  • Smaller Windows download: 71 MB, down from 105 MB.

Updating from 1.0.0

1.0.0 can't update itself, so install this one by hand. From now on the apps update themselves.

  • Windows: run the new OmarchyMusic-Setup.exe. It replaces the old version and keeps your settings.
  • Android: install the new OmarchyMusic.apk over the old one. If you built the app yourself (a debug build), uninstall that first.
  • Linux: git pull in your clone, then run ./install.sh.
