v0.4.11-beta
Beacon v0.4.11-beta
A Network page for live traffic, plus history that records how much data the
host actually moved.
Network
- New Network page in the sidebar. Remote sockets are drawn on a world map
at the peer’s city. Click a destination, or this host, to open the matching
connections. - The map overlay shows live receive/send on physical adapters and the process
with the most remote sockets. - The connection list shows process, inferred service (HTTPS, SSH, and other
well-known ports), direction (in / out), reverse DNS, and traffic. Open a row
for local and peer addresses, ports, and byte totals. - Per-socket byte counters depend on the OS. On Windows, Beacon needs to be
running elevated. On Linux they come fromss. Service and direction are
inferred from ports either way. - Public peer locations use the same cached ip-api lookup as the activity log.
Private and local addresses stay on-host and are not sent out.
Usage over time
- The history recorder now stores byte deltas for physical adapters, not only
the instantaneous rate. Existing databases gain the new columns on startup. - Network includes a usage timeline for 24 hours (hourly), 7 days, or 30
days (daily). Switch the unit between Auto, KB, MB, and GB. - History and the dashboard chart catalog include a Data transferred
panel for the same totals. Hourly bars are used for ranges up to 48 hours;
longer ranges use daily bars. - Bars stay empty until the recorder has sampled after this upgrade. Rates on
the existing Network history chart are unchanged.
Disk history
- Disk charts split read and write per physical disk, with a live rate on each
row. The Live range follows the system stream the same way CPU and memory do.
Install
In the app: Updates → Beacon → install v0.4.11-beta.
Or on the server:

Beacon v0.4.10-beta
Package updates
- Hide Ubuntu phased packages from the pending list. Apt lists them as
upgradable, then skips them until the rollout includes this machine. - Show a short note with an Install anyway action when updates are waiting
on phasing.
Suspended websites
- When a website project is turned off, Beacon serves a temporary “Service
suspended” page on its port instead of leaving the hostname empty. - Turning the project back on releases that port before starting the real
service.
Projects
- Edit a project’s git remote and branch in project details. Saving updates
originin the checkout so pull/fetch use the new URL. - Worker remotes are optional. Changing the remote picks a matching git
account when one is configured. - Block deployment actions while a project is suspended.

Project controls and startup settings
- Turn on or suspend projects from cards and project details. Controls reflect the reported runtime state.
- Keep card controls in a footer outside the scrollable content. Give project details priority over previews.
- Read configured systemd and Docker startup settings when loading projects, including terminal changes, and apply changes made in Beacon to the runtime.
- Respect the startup preference when applying systemd services and Docker containers.
- Read named systemd status properties reliably.
Suspending stops the runtime for the current session; it leaves the startup preference unchanged. Projects must have the correct runtime and service/container configured. Install this backend update to use the new controls with a remote development UI.

Server and web production builds and 64 automated tests passed on Windows. Live Linux service controls require host verification.

v0.4.8-beta
Beacon v0.4.8-beta
Experimental patch on v0.4.7-beta. Stop a bad project or tunnel from
taking Beacon down, and stop systemd from crash-looping a unit that was never
built.
Resilience
- Unexpected exceptions and rejected promises are logged; the dashboard process
stays up. Request failures become HTTP 500 instead of a dead Node process. - Live stats: send a stream ping and prime a snapshot at boot so Cloudflare does
not hold an empty pipe. If/api/healthstill answers, the UI shows a banner
instead of “the host isn’t responding.”
Projects / systemd
- Refuse to enable a systemd unit when the working directory or start file does
not exist (the/opt/hookmiss). EnvironmentFile=-…so a missing env file cannot make systemd fail spawn.- If the unit does not stay active, Beacon disables it so it cannot restart
every few seconds. - Unlink or delete a systemd project runs
disable --now; purge also removes
the system unit file. - New git clones default under
/home/vadmin(or the saved clone folder), not
/opt.
Cloudflare
- Refuse to write
config.ymlif the patch would drop an existing hostname
such asdash.ill4.life.
Upgrade from v0.4.7-beta

v0.4.7-beta
Beacon v0.4.7-beta
Experimental patch on v0.4.6-beta. In-app file preview: images, video,
audio, and PDFs open in the editor instead of as text. Binary files get a
download card. The Edit action is hidden for non-text files.
Adds GET /api/fs/preview so range requests (video) are not logged as
downloads.

v0.4.6-beta
Beacon v0.4.6-beta
Experimental patch on v0.4.5-beta. Two follow-ups to the SSE telemetry
change.
Live charts
The History Live range now draws ~1s samples from the system stream. The
save interval is still only how often metrics are written to disk. Longer
ranges (15m, 1h, …) are unchanged.
Process-count charts still follow the recorder; that metric is not in the
system snapshot.
Favicon
The tab icon no longer rebuilds on every telemetry tick. It updates when the
connection state actually changes (live / disconnected / connecting).

v0.4.5-beta
Beacon v0.4.5-beta
Experimental patch on v0.4.4-beta. Live system telemetry (Overview gauges
and the sidebar live/disconnected meter) now uses Server-Sent Events instead of
polling /api/system once a second.
GET /api/system is still there for one-shot reads and debugging.
This is a behaviour change on the hot path. If Overview stalls, reconnects
loop, or a signed-out session still shows live stats, roll back to v0.4.4-beta.
What to check
- Overview CPU / memory / disks / GPUs still update about once a second.
- Disconnect the host or stop the service: reconnect overlay and favicon should
still flip, then recover on their own. - Sign out or revoke the session: the stream should drop and the UI should
return to login.

Beacon v0.4.4-beta
Small experiment on v0.4.3. Docker workers can run without a Dockerfile: a
plain image mounts the project folder at /app. Published images still need no
files on the host. Worker containers show on the Containers page with a link
back to the project.

v0.4.3
Beacon v0.4.3
Recommended patch (not a beta experiment). Tighten login, sockets, files, and
worker env so a session or viewer cannot reach more than they should.
- Login and recovery are rate-limited per IP and username (delay, then lockout).
X-Forwarded-Foris only trusted from loopback orSYSTEMDASH_TRUSTED_PROXIES.- WebSockets re-check the session; logout, demotion, or user delete drops the socket.
- Viewers cannot read Beacon data dirs or
.ssh. - Worker and compose processes inherit a small host env, not the full service env.
- Admins can reset a user’s password from Users.
Workers without an image now pick a Dockerfile or a language image from the
project folder.
Upgrade from v0.4.2-beta
In the app: Updates → Beacon → install v0.4.3.
Or on the server:
export SYSTEMDASH_HOME=/opt/systemdash

sudo systemctl restart systemdashFull Changelog: v0.1.9...v0.4.3
v0.4.2-beta
Beacon v0.4.2-beta
Workers are no longer an empty “attach a container” label. A worker is a spec Beacon
runs: start command, env vars, Docker image or Dockerfile, CPU/memory, replicas,
restart policy, optional cron, autoscale, autodeploy, and live logs. Native
processes work on Windows without systemd.
Every project page now uses one layout — health, then live logs or preview, then
configuration, then actions. Configuration is grouped into titled bands inside a
single panel (service, how it runs, public address, preview, environment,
resources, scaling, restarts, deploys, notes); each kind shows only the bands that
apply to it, and a worker's advanced bands stay collapsed until you ask for them.
Remove a project with Remove from dashboard (unlink, files stay) or Delete
Beacon files too (stop and destroy what Beacon created).
