CrashRecomp v1.04: almost 3x faster, native rendering path

Choose a tag to compare

@VitoMiguelF VitoMiguelF released this 24 Oct 07:07

What's new in v1.04

Almost 3x faster: the native rendering path

The game used to be emulated at the Xbox 360 GPU level all the way down. v1.04 replaces the parts that were
holding the frame rate back with native code, and it is the first step of moving the whole renderer to
native Direct3D-to-Vulkan calls.

Heaviest scene (L1_E1 village, 1080p, unlimited FPS) v1.03 v1.04
Average frame rate ~180 fps ~500 fps (2.8x)
Worst 1% of frames (1% low) ~105 fps ~265 fps
99th percentile frame time 6.6 ms 2.7 ms
CPU used by the vblank thread ~70% of a core ~5%

Measured on a Ryzen 7 5700X + RTX 5080. The gain is on the CPU side (the GPU was never the limit, and DLSS or
a lower resolution never changed the frame rate), so slower CPUs should gain in a similar proportion. We
haven't measured that yet: reports with your CPU and the F1 overlay's numbers are welcome.

What changed under the hood:

  • The scene is drawn in one pass. On the Xbox 360 the 10 MB of EDRAM can't hold a 720p frame with MSAA, so
the game draws the scene three times, once per screen tile, and its Direct3D holds all the commands back
until the end of the frame. Our renderer draws into full-size images, so v1.04 draws the scene once and the
commands reach the renderer while the game is still building the frame. This alone was 2.4x, and it also
removed the old fix for the line in the ice at the tile seam (there are no seams any more).
  • The game's Direct3D command building runs as native code (the part that copied the render state into
command packets and handed them to the GPU), checked byte for byte against the original.
  • No more 500 fps cap: the emulated vblank ran at 1000 Hz and the game waits for two per frame. It is
2000 Hz now, and the thread that drives it sleeps on a precise timer instead of spinning on a CPU core.
  • Shaders are compiled at install and warmed up in the background, so changing the resolution or the
upscaler no longer stutters the first time.
  • Fewer Vulkan render passes per frame.

The road to "100% native" (replacing the rest of the Xbox 360 GPU emulation with direct Direct3D-to-Vulkan
calls, piece by piece) is documented in
docs/internals/native-gpu-plan.md,
with tasks for anyone who wants to help.

Simpler launcher

  • The launcher opens on one page with the main options: language, resolution, FPS limit, HD AI Remaster and
a single LIGHTING: ORIGINAL / REMASTER choice (REMASTER turns on SSAO, indirect light, contact shadows and
soft shadows). ADVANCED (bottom right, Y on a controller, Y or F2 on the keyboard) shows every tab.
  • The launcher and the in-game SETTINGS screen now share the same options, names and help texts.
  • Removed rows that did nothing useful: SHADOW RESOLUTION (the game's shadows are stencil shadows) and HD
TEXTURE PACKS (mod texture packs load by themselves; the HD AI Remaster's pack follows its own option).
  • Keyboard and controller navigation in the launcher is more reliable.

Requirements

Windows 10/11 x64, a GPU with Vulkan 1.3 and an up-to-date driver (for example NVIDIA GTX 900 or newer, AMD
RX 400 or newer, Intel Iris Xe / Arc), your Xbox 360 game files, and about 1.5 GB of free space.

Known issues

  • Windows SmartScreen may warn about CrashSetup.exe because it isn't code-signed. Choose "More info" then
    "Run anyway".
  • Unzip to a short path (for example C:\Games\CrashRecomp). Very deep folders can hit Windows' 260-character
    path limit while building.
  • Linux / Steam Deck via Proton isn't verified yet.

Install: download CrashRecomp-v1.04.zip, unzip it and run CrashSetup.exe (see the README). Coming from an
older version, install v1.04 the same way in a new folder. To keep your saves and settings, copy the old
dist\userdata folder into the new dist\. The optional subtitles and HD AI Remaster downloads are
unchanged and stay on the v1.0 release. The
installer fetches them from there.

o fim do quadro.

e sombras suaves). AVANÇADO (canto inferior direito, Y no controle, Y ou F2 no teclado) mostra todas as
    abas.

Instalação: baixe o CrashRecomp-v1.04.zip, descompacte e abra o CrashSetup.exe (veja o README).
instalador os baixa de lá.

CrashRecomp v1.03: nothing to install, Vulkan renderer

Choose a tag to compare

@VitoMiguelF VitoMiguelF released this 23 Oct 18:59

What's new in v1.03

Nothing to install anymore: no Visual Studio, LLVM, Python or Git

  • The release zip now carries its own build tools in toolchain\: llvm-mingw (clang + lld), CMake, Ninja and the official embeddable Python with numpy and Pillow. The installer builds the game with them, so nothing is installed on your system and no compiler is downloaded. Thanks to everyone who asked for this.
  • The zip also has the XenonRecomp source already patched, so Git isn't needed either.
  • Same rule as always: no recompiled game code is distributed. The installer still builds everything from your dump, on your PC, in about 2 minutes on an 8-core CPU.
  • Advanced: BUILD TOOLS = VISUAL STUDIO in the installer (or --toolchain msvc) still builds with an installed Visual Studio + LLVM clang-cl.

Vulkan renderer

  • The renderer is now Vulkan only (Direct3D 12 was removed). Menus, levels, SMAA, the lighting remaster and all graphics options render the same as before.
  • Why Vulkan: it's the first step toward a native Linux port. Vulkan is the graphics API Linux and the Steam Deck use natively, so the renderer won't need to be rewritten for them. Running through Proton should already be possible, but it's still being tested; reports are welcome.
  • DLSS (NGX Vulkan) and FSR 3.1 (FidelityFX Vulkan) both work on Vulkan.
  • Performance is the same as v1.02 (about 180 fps in the heaviest scene, the L1_E1 village, on our test PC). More performance work is coming in the next versions.
  • The installer downloads Microsoft's signed dxcompiler.dll (HLSL to SPIR-V) next to the game, pinned by SHA-256 like the other SDK files.

Installer and docs

  • PREREQUISITES now just says INCLUDED. The winget installs only show up in the advanced Visual Studio mode.
  • The disk sizes are corrected: about 1.5 GB for the install, plus 3 GB to copy the game into the folder, 4.5 GB for the HD AI Remaster, and ~18 GB for ASSETS FOR MODDING (mostly WAV sounds; it used to say 4 GB).
  • New CONTRIBUTING.md and English cheat sheets in docs/internals/ for collaborators.

Requirements

Windows 10/11 x64, a GPU with Vulkan 1.3 and an up-to-date driver (for example NVIDIA GTX 900 or newer, AMD RX 400 or newer, Intel Iris Xe / Arc), your Xbox 360 game files, and about 1.5 GB of free space.

Known issues

  • A GPU or driver without Vulkan 1.3 can't run the game anymore (there's no Direct3D 12 fallback). Update the driver first.
  • Windows SmartScreen may warn about CrashSetup.exe because it isn't code-signed. Choose "More info" then "Run anyway".
  • Unzip to a short path (for example C:\Games\CrashRecomp). Very deep folders can hit Windows' 260-character path limit while building.
  • Linux / Steam Deck via Proton isn't verified yet, and the native Linux port is the next big step.

Install: download CrashRecomp-v1.03.zip (~150 MB), unzip it and run CrashSetup.exe (see the README). Coming from an older version, install v1.03 the same way in a new folder. To keep your saves and settings, copy the old dist\userdata folder into the new dist\. The optional subtitles and HD AI Remaster downloads are unchanged and stay on the v1.0 release. The installer fetches them from there.

  • A regra continua a mesma: nenhum código recompilado do jogo é distribuído.

Renderizador Vulkan

  • DLSS (NGX Vulkan) e FSR 3.1 (FidelityFX Vulkan) funcionam no Vulkan.

Instalação: baixe CrashRecomp-v1.03.zip (~150 MB), descompacte e rode o CrashSetup.exe (veja o README).

CrashRecomp v1.02

@VitoMiguelF VitoMiguelF released this 22 Oct 22:03

What's new in v1.02

Player 2 on a second DualSense, next to player 1

Local co-op: a second controller plays as player 2

  • Connect two controllers (Xbox or DualSense, in any combination). In a level, press B on the second one when JOIN GAME shows up. Player 2 rides in Crash's backpack, Y jumps off, and from then on player 2 moves and fights on their own. START on that controller pauses as P2 (DROP OUT leaves).
  • Before, every controller ended up on player 1 when an Xbox pad and a DualSense were mixed, or with DSX/DS4Windows. Now each physical controller is its own player.
  • The keyboard and mouse always stay with player 1. With a single controller, it is player 1 together with the keyboard.
  • New SETTINGS > CONTROLS > PLAYER 1 / PLAYER 2 (also in the launcher): AUTO or one of the connected controllers, by name (CONTROLLER 1, DUALSENSE 1 (USB), DUALSENSE 2 (USB)...). It applies right away. In AUTO, the controller that presses START on the title screen is player 1, like on the console.
  • A DualSense that DSX/DS4Windows also show as a virtual Xbox pad counts as one controller (recognised from the first presses).

Installer fix: ASSETS FOR MODDING no longer fails with No module named 'numpy'

  • The asset export needs two Python packages, numpy and Pillow, now listed in tools/requirements.txt. The installer checks for them and installs them with pip into the same Python it runs with (python -m pip install -r tools/requirements.txt) before that step.
  • If pip can't install them (no internet, or a Python without pip), only the asset step fails. The game is still installed and playable, and the installer shows the exact command to run by hand.
  • When only the asset export failed, the installer says the game is ready and offers PLAY, and TRY AGAIN reruns just that step (python tools\setup.py --game <folder> --assets-only in a terminal).
  • PREREQUISITES lists missing Python packages without blocking the install. Click it to install them right away.

Install: download CrashRecomp-v1.02.zip, unzip, run CrashSetup.exe (see the README). Coming from v1.01, install v1.02 the same way in a new folder; to keep your saves and settings, copy the old dist\userdata folder into the new dist\. The optional subtitles and HD AI Remaster downloads are unchanged and stay on the v1.0 release. The installer fetches them from there.

START nesse controle pausa como P2 (DROP OUT sai).

Instalação: baixe CrashRecomp-v1.02.zip, descompacte e rode o CrashSetup.exe (veja o README).
