@VivaLaVent VivaLaVent released this 28 Sep 21:23

New

  • Internet access. Kodi's add-on repository loads, images and add-on information come from the mirrors, and add-ons without code (skins, languages, resources) install.
  • Native on-screen keyboard. Text fields open the PS5's own keyboard, with Kodi's keyboard as fallback (contributed by Notedop).
  • HDR output. HDR10 video is output natively and HLG is converted to PQ, with the on-screen display composited into the HDR picture. With the PS5's HDR at On When Supported the TV stays in HDR for the whole session.
  • USB drives and internal storage with PS5-Lapy-JB-Daemon loaded before Kodi, including hot-plug. See the README's USB drives section.
  • VP9 in hardware (Profile 0 and 2), 10-bit HEVC in hardware, zero-copy video, AV1 via dav1d.
  • Surround audio in the console's hardware-verified 8-channel order; Dolby/DTS passthrough (including TrueHD and DTS-HD) offered to Allow passthrough — unconfirmed, start with the receiver volume low.
  • VRR for every Adjust display refresh rate option, with Kodi's own switch-back behaviour.
  • Seeking: no more black pictures or decoder error bursts after a seek (parameter sets re-sent, open-GOP leading pictures dropped).
  • A/V sync: accurate audio-clock delay, bounded timestamps, presentation latency reported on the VRR link.
  • Fixes: worker-thread crash on thumbnail extraction, wrong colours on 10-bit files that start dark, green picture after a reconfigure, VRR modes offered without a VRR link (#3).

Install

  1. Extract the zip into /data/homebrew/ on the console (creates PPSA99420/).
  2. Register the title with ShadowMountPlus; sce_sys/param.json changed, so re-register when updating.
  3. Close Kodi before replacing its files over FTP.

Requirements and settings: README.

Known issues

  • Python add-ons (scrapers, plugins) are not built yet; binary add-ons need later work.
  • The interface can freeze for a few seconds at times; being investigated (a kodi-debug log helps).
  • 4K60 may stutter (the decoder runs at pipeline depth 1).
  • Passthrough is unconfirmed; the player debug overlay (L3) raises the rate during VRR.

Discussion and test reports: Discord.

@VivaLaVent VivaLaVent released this 27 Sep 22:30

What's new

  • HDR10 output. HDR10 (PQ) video is now output natively: the scanout switches to the PS5's 10-bit BT.2020 PQ format while the video plays, Kodi passes the video through without tone mapping, and the on-screen display is composited into the HDR picture. With the PS5's HDR at On When Supported the TV stays in HDR for the whole session (the PS5 maps menus and SDR video itself, as for any HDR-capable title). HLG is still tone mapped.
  • VP9 in hardware (Profile 0 and Profile 2, 8- and 10-bit WebM), with superframes split and hidden frames handled.
  • Zero-copy video. The GPU reads the decoder's frames directly; no per-frame copy for 1080p, 4K or 10-bit content.
  • 10-bit HEVC (Main 10) in hardware, with correct colours also for files that fade in from black.
  • AV1 now decodes (dav1d), including Dolby Vision profile 10 files, which are AV1-based.
  • Surround audio: 5.1/7.1 PCM to the console (set Kodi's Number of channels to 5.1 or 7.1). Dolby Digital / Dolby Digital Plus / DTS passthrough is offered to Kodi's Allow passthrough setting — requires the PS5's Audio Format at Linear PCM; try it at low volume first.
  • Interlaced streams (1080i TV recordings) are decoded in hardware and deinterlaced with bwdif.
  • Crash fix: thumbnail extraction could overflow a worker thread's stack and crash Kodi (immediately, or ~30 s later when the thread ended). Thread stacks are now 8 MiB.
  • Fix (#3): on setups without a VRR link, Kodi no longer offers VRR modes, so it neither switches the TV to 120 Hz briefly nor reports a refresh rate it isn't outputting.

Install

  1. Extract the zip into /data/homebrew/ on the console (creates PPSA99420/).
  2. Register the title with ShadowMountPlus (also after updating: sce_sys/param.json changed).
  3. Add sources under Videos → Files → Add videos… → Browse → Add network location… (SMB2/3 or NFS, by IP address).

Settings that matter (VRR, HDR, audio channels, passthrough) are explained in the README.

Known issues

  • The player debug overlay (L3) raises the rate to ~120 Hz during VRR.
  • 4K60 VP9 may stutter (the decoder is just over the frame budget at pipeline depth one); kodi-hw-pipeline2 is an experiment for it.
  • No internet access yet (add-on repository, online streams); no Python or binary add-ons.

VRR Galore

Choose a tag to compare

@VivaLaVent VivaLaVent released this 26 Sep 17:32

What's new

  • 60 Hz by default: menus and stopped state at 59.94 Hz, never a fixed 120 Hz.

  • VRR during playback, matched to the video's frame rate. Requirements:

    • PS5, Screen and Video → Video Output: VRR on, and Enable 120 Hz Output on Automatic.
    • Kodi, Settings → Player → Videos: Adjust display refresh rate set to On start/stop.
    Video VRR rate
    23.976 fps (films) 71.93 Hz
    24 fps 48 Hz
    25 fps (PAL) 50 Hz
    29.97 / 30 fps 59.94 / 60 Hz
    50 / 59.94 / 60 fps 50 / 59.94 / 60 Hz

Every frame is on screen equally long, with no 3:2 judder and no speed change. Stopping the video returns to 60 Hz.

  • Sync playback to display no longer affects the output rate. It only adjusts playback speed and audio pitch on a fixed 59.94 Hz output.

  • Build robustness:

    • Configure restores and re-applies all Kodi patches from a clean base.
    • Configure copies changed overlay files with fresh timestamps.
    • Packaging refuses stale builds.
  • Cleaned up: the display probes, experiments and diagnostic switches are gone. Remaining switches: kodi-reset, kodi-uninstall, kodi-debug, kodi-swdecode.

Install

  1. Extract the zip into /data/homebrew/ on the console.
  2. Register the title with ShadowMountPlus.

The display settings are explained in the README.

Known issues

  • The player debug overlay (L3) raises the rate to ~120 Hz during VRR.
  • HEVC 10-bit decodes in software.
  • No internet access yet (add-on repository, online streams).

@VivaLaVent VivaLaVent released this 26 Sep 01:14

What's new

Native 3840×2160 rendering.
Refresh-rate switching between 59.94 and 119.88 Hz through Kodi's Adjust display refresh rate: films at 23.976/24 fps play with an even 5:1 cadence.
The real 59.94 Hz output rate and a display vsync clock for Sync playback to display.
Video frame uploads 6× faster (rectangle textures).
No more ghosted GUI text.

Install: extract into /data/homebrew/, then register with ShadowMountPlus. Recommended settings are in the README.

Known limits: 25/50 fps content stays at 59.94 Hz; HEVC 10-bit decodes in software; no internet access yet. decodes in software; no internet access yet.
