@VivaLaVent VivaLaVent released this 27 Oct 15:21

What's new

Updating from v1.0.3–v1.4.0 (no reflash)

On the PS5 (in a terminal or over SSH, password ps5), with a network connection (a USB tether from a phone works if Wi-Fi doesn't). While v1.4.1 is a pre-release, the generic command installs v1.3.1; use the exact one:

cd ~ && curl -LO https://github.com/VivaLaVent/ps5-bazzite-deck/releases/download/v1.4.1/ps5-bazzite-deck-v1.4.1-update.tar.xz && curl -LO https://github.com/VivaLaVent/ps5-bazzite-deck/releases/download/v1.4.1/ps5-bazzite-deck-v1.4.1-update.tar.xz.sha256 && sha256sum -c ps5-bazzite-deck-v1.4.1-update.tar.xz.sha256 && tar xJf ps5-bazzite-deck-v1.4.1-update.tar.xz && bash ps5-bazzite-deck-v1.4.1-update/update.sh

It checks the download, makes a backup, installs the new kernel, drivers and settings, and prints DONE plus an undo command. Then power off and run the loader as usual. The generic command for later: bash <(curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/VivaLaVent/ps5-bazzite-deck/main/tools/update-latest.sh).

From v1.0.2 or older: reflash.

Before and after the first boot

  • PS5 settings, before running the loader: Enable HDMI Device Link off (Settings → HDMI) and Supply Power to USB Ports Always (Settings → System → Power Saving → Features Available in Rest Mode).
  • In Bazzite, on first boot: turn HDR off and set RGB range to Full, in both Gaming Mode and desktop mode.
  • The default password is ps5.

Install (new)

  1. Download all .7z.00* files into one folder.
  2. Open ps5-bazzite-deck-v1.4.1.img.7z.001 with 7-Zip (Windows) / Keka (macOS) / 7z x (Linux) → you get ps5-bazzite-deck.img.
  3. Flash it to a 32 GB+ USB drive or SSD with Rufus (or dd on Linux) and boot with the loader.

Known issues

  • First boot is slow; the screen can stay black for a few minutes.
  • Which firmware versions are supported depends on rmux's PS5 Linux loader: see its releases.
  • IW620 consoles: if Wi-Fi still won't connect on this build, send journalctl -b --no-pager | grep -i -e wlan -e NetworkManager | grep -i -e fail -e error -e timeout | head -20 in Discord; then the suspect was wrong and the search continues.
  • VRR isn't in a release yet; it continues in the vrr-test builds.

VRR test 16 (quick kernel for v1.4.x, opt-in hdmi.vrr_test=1)

Choose a tag to compare

@VivaLaVent VivaLaVent released this 27 Oct 17:26

Test 15 + the VRR re-setup now runs during games (it was re-armed on every frame before, so the chip never got its VRR setup while frames were flowing; found by hsgodd). Fixed installer (pukason's SIGPIPE find, stripped module, ~25 MB). Install: cd ~ && rm -rf ps5-quick-vrr-test16* && curl -LO https://github.com/VivaLaVent/ps5-bazzite-deck/releases/download/vrr-test16/ps5-quick-vrr-test16.tar.gz && tar xzf ps5-quick-vrr-test16.tar.gz && bash ps5-quick-vrr-test16/install.sh, then hdmi.vrr_test=1 in cmdline.txt and a cold boot. Check: sudo dmesg | grep -c 'PS5 DPCD' must be above 0. Test vrr_chip=0 and vrr_chip=1 in a fullscreen game at a locked 60, HDR off. If it doesn't boot: copy bzImage + initrd.img from the v1.4.0 bundle's efi/ folder onto the USB drive's FAT32 partition.

v1.4.0 (pulled: Wi-Fi broken on IW620 consoles, use v1.4.1)

@VivaLaVent VivaLaVent released this 26 Oct 19:46

What's new

  • One DualSense for the PS5 and Linux (thanks to Dasloh, PR #9): Linux now uses its own Bluetooth address, so a DualSense keeps its PS5 pairing on one profile and the Linux pairing on another (for example PS + Square). No more re-pairing when you switch between the PS5 system and Linux. Works with both Bluetooth chips the PS5 uses. See docs/dualsense-profiles.md.
    After this update, pair your controllers with Linux once more (the Linux address changes once).
  • Bluetooth that stays: controllers reconnect by themselves when you press PS, pairing no longer gets undone a second later, and the Bluetooth adapter no longer vanishes after a while or after sleep (thanks to Dasloh, who found why, and to the ps5-cachyos-setup project for the pairing details).
  • Sleep: a short press of the power button (or Steam's Sleep) puts the PS5 to sleep: screen off, orange light, game paused. A short press wakes it (one beep); game, network and Bluetooth continue. Thanks to Dasloh (PR #4 to the PS5 kernel patches).
  • TV remote (HDMI CEC): the TV remote's arrows, OK and back work in Game Mode and on the desktop, and at boot the PS5 turns the TV on and switches it to its input ( ps5-cec.one_touch_play=0 in cmdline.txt stops that). Thanks to Slip (PR #53 to the PS5 kernel patches).
  • GPU load and temperature in the Steam performance overlay (and MangoHud): they showed 0 before. The temperature is the chip's one sensor, so CPU and GPU show the same value; that's correct on the PS5, where both are one chip.
  • 4K60 and 120 Hz back on TVs that had lost them (issue #11): the PS5 now tells the TV it's an HDMI 2 source at every picture setup, so TVs that fell back to their HDMI 1.4 mode offer 4K60 and 120 Hz again.
  • Fewer black screens: the link from the GPU to the PS5's HDMI chip always runs at full speed, and sleep no longer leaves the TV flickering in HDR.
  • Same IP after a reflash: the console identifies to your router by its hardware address.
  • Restart straight back into Linux (optional, experimental): run ps5-warm-reboot on once, and every restart goes straight back into Linux in about 20 seconds, without the PS5 system and the loader. Off by default: the PS5's hardware isn't reset by it, so on some consoles the picture comes back garbled (Ctrl+Alt+F2, then Ctrl+Alt+F1 fixes it) and Wi-Fi or Bluetooth can stay off until a cold start. ps5-warm-reboot off switches it off again.
  • Updating is one command, for this and every future version (see below and the README).

Updating from v1.0.3–v1.3.1 (no reflash)

On the PS5 (in a terminal or over SSH, password ps5), with a network connection. This updates to the latest version (from v1.3.1 on, this one command always works):

bash <(curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/VivaLaVent/ps5-bazzite-deck/main/tools/update-latest.sh)

Or exactly this version:

cd ~ && curl -LO https://github.com/VivaLaVent/ps5-bazzite-deck/releases/download/v1.4.0/ps5-bazzite-deck-v1.4.0-update.tar.xz && curl -LO https://github.com/VivaLaVent/ps5-bazzite-deck/releases/download/v1.4.0/ps5-bazzite-deck-v1.4.0-update.tar.xz.sha256 && sha256sum -c ps5-bazzite-deck-v1.4.0-update.tar.xz.sha256 && tar xJf ps5-bazzite-deck-v1.4.0-update.tar.xz && bash ps5-bazzite-deck-v1.4.0-update/update.sh

It checks the download, makes a backup, installs the new kernel, drivers and settings, and prints DONE plus an undo command. Your games, files and settings stay. Then reboot and run the loader as usual, and pair your controllers with Linux once more (the Linux Bluetooth address changes once). Pre-releases and test builds (v1.4.0-rc…, vrr-test…) are replaced too.

  2. Open ps5-bazzite-deck-v1.4.0.img.7z.001 with 7-Zip (Windows) / Keka (macOS) / 7z x (Linux) → you get ps5-bazzite-deck.img.

  • VRR isn't possible yet. The PS5's HDMI chip has its own VRR mode (found by hsgodd in the stock system), but TVs still drop the signal with it; work continues in separate test builds.
  • If the picture blanks every few seconds on a monitor with a "console mode", try ps5-cec.one_touch_play=0 in cmdline.txt and tell us whether it helps.

VRR test 10b (v1.4.0 + VRR opt-in, hdmi.vrr_test=1)

Choose a tag to compare

@VivaLaVent VivaLaVent released this 26 Oct 22:40

VRR test build, not a release: v1.4.0 plus VRR test 10b, opt-in. Without the option below it behaves exactly like v1.4.0.

What's new since test 8

  • The HDMI chip's VRR registers now match the stock system exactly (decoded from hsgodd's kernel dump). What was still missing is likely on the GPU side: the GPU now also sends the HDMI chip the two VRR packets AMD sends to DP-to-HDMI converters (Adaptive-Sync and FreeSync), while VRR is on.
  • VRR off = normal picture: the HDMI chip only enters its VRR mode while VRR is switched on in Game Mode (or KDE). Switching VRR on or off sets the chip up again, which blanks the screen for a moment.

Install

Needs v1.4.0 (or v1.4.0-rc8). In a terminal or over SSH, password ps5:

bash <(curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/VivaLaVent/ps5-bazzite-deck/main/tools/update-latest.sh) vrr-test10b

Then add hdmi.vrr_test=1 to the end of cmdline.txt (one line), switch VRR on in the TV, power off and start with the loader.

The test

  1. With VRR off in Game Mode: is the picture normal? (sudo dmesg | grep "PS5 VRR" should say offered.)
  2. Switch VRR on in Game Mode, frame limit 45. If the TV keeps the picture: does it show VRR, and does its refresh rate follow the game? If it starts dropping the signal, run this over SSH (about 3.5 minutes): it tries the four packet combinations and counts how often the TV re-announced in 20 s, 0 = stable:
P=/sys/module/hdmi/parameters; try() { echo $1 | sudo tee $P/vrr_sdp >/dev/null; sleep 25; a=$(sudo dmesg | grep -c "got real edid"); sleep 20; b=$(sudo dmesg | grep -c "got real edid"); echo "vrr_sdp=$1: $((b-a)) re-announces"; }; try 3; try 1; try 2; try 0
  1. Send the result lines, sudo dmesg | grep -e "VSync block" -e "PS5 VRR" | tail -6, and whether the TV showed VRR at any point.

To get the picture back: switch VRR off in Game Mode (blind: it's the same menu position), or remove hdmi.vrr_test=1 and power off.

v1.3.1 – 1440p picture position fix, one-command updates

Choose a tag to compare

@VivaLaVent VivaLaVent released this 25 Oct 22:05

What's new

  • Fix: 1440p picture a few lines too high (the top edge cut off a little), e.g. with LG TVs at 1440p120. The PS5's HDMI chip expects the sync signals of the standard 1440p timing and moves the picture when a display uses the other vertical polarity; 1440p now always gets the standard one.
  • Updating is one command now, for this and every future version (see below and the README).
  • Everything else is the same as v1.3.0.

Updating from v1.0.3–v1.3.0 (no reflash)

On the PS5 (in a terminal or over SSH, password ps5), with a network connection. This updates to the latest version (from now on, this one command always works):

bash <(curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/VivaLaVent/ps5-bazzite-deck/main/tools/update-latest.sh)

Or exactly this version:

cd ~ && curl -LO https://github.com/VivaLaVent/ps5-bazzite-deck/releases/download/v1.3.1/ps5-bazzite-deck-v1.3.1-update.tar.xz && curl -LO https://github.com/VivaLaVent/ps5-bazzite-deck/releases/download/v1.3.1/ps5-bazzite-deck-v1.3.1-update.tar.xz.sha256 && sha256sum -c ps5-bazzite-deck-v1.3.1-update.tar.xz.sha256 && tar xJf ps5-bazzite-deck-v1.3.1-update.tar.xz && bash ps5-bazzite-deck-v1.3.1-update/update.sh

It checks the download, makes a backup, installs the new kernel, drivers and settings, and prints DONE plus an undo command. Your games, files and settings stay. Then reboot and run the loader as usual. Test kernels (hdmi-test…) are replaced too.

  • On some setups the picture stays black at 4K60 on some boots. If that happens to you, add hdmi.log_notify=1 to cmdline.txt, and after a black boot send sudo dmesg | grep -i -e notify -e setup in Discord.

v1.3.0 – HDR, Bluetooth fixes, standard display modes

Choose a tag to compare

@VivaLaVent VivaLaVent released this 25 Oct 19:34

What's new

  • HDR works on most consoles (HDR10 at 1080p60 and 4K60). Switch it on in Game Mode → Settings → Display. If the picture looks wrong with HDR on, your console's HDMI chip doesn't support it: switch it off again.
  • Bluetooth: more reliable start-up of the Bluetooth chip, from the PS5 Linux community (Maitreya25), and our own Bluetooth fixes are now part of the upstream PS5 kernel.
  • Display modes: 1080p60, 1080p120, 1440p60, 1440p120 and 4K60 are offered whenever your TV/monitor can do them, even if it doesn't list them itself. A new display starts at 1080p60; pick a higher mode once in the display settings and it's remembered.
  • The desktop only shows what the PS5 can output: no extra resolutions and no colour depth above 8 bit.
  • Fewer retries and black screens when a display connection keeps failing, and a new diagnostic option (hdmi.log_notify=1) for black-screen reports.

Updating from v1.0.3–v1.2.0 (no reflash)

One update bundle brings any of these to v1.3.0: kernel, drivers and settings. Your games, files and settings stay. Also works if you're running one of the test builds. On the PS5 (in a terminal or over SSH, password ps5), with a network connection:

cd ~ && curl -LO https://github.com/VivaLaVent/ps5-bazzite-deck/releases/download/v1.3.0/ps5-bazzite-deck-v1.3.0-update.tar.xz && curl -LO https://github.com/VivaLaVent/ps5-bazzite-deck/releases/download/v1.3.0/ps5-bazzite-deck-v1.3.0-update.tar.xz.sha256 && sha256sum -c ps5-bazzite-deck-v1.3.0-update.tar.xz.sha256 && tar xJf ps5-bazzite-deck-v1.3.0-update.tar.xz && bash ps5-bazzite-deck-v1.3.0-update/update.sh

It checks the download, makes a backup, installs, and prints DONE plus an undo command. Then reboot and run the loader as usual. cat /etc/ps5-bazzite-deck-version then shows v1.3.0. The first start after the update is at 1080p60: pick your resolution again once in the display settings.

From v1.0.2 or older: reflash.

Newer: update to the latest version with one command: bash <(curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/VivaLaVent/ps5-bazzite-deck/main/tools/update-latest.sh) (see the latest release).

  1. Download all .7z.00* files into one folder.
  2. Open ps5-bazzite-deck-v1.3.0.img.7z.001 with 7-Zip (Windows) / Keka (macOS) / 7z x (Linux) → you get ps5-bazzite-deck.img.

  • Which firmware versions are supported depends on rmux's PS5 Linux loader: see its releases.
  • On some setups the picture stays black at 4K60 on some boots. If that happens to you, add hdmi.log_notify=1 to cmdline.txt, and after a black boot send sudo dmesg | grep -i -e notify -e setup in Discord.

v1.2.0 – rainbow colours fixed, display switching, 1440p

Choose a tag to compare

@VivaLaVent VivaLaVent released this 23 Oct 17:03

What's new

  • Fix: rainbow / "disco" colours. Some TVs announce deep colour, and the PS5 then sent 10 or 12 bits per colour, which the PS5's HDMI chip shows as rainbow contours (and on some TVs a picture that keeps dropping out). The output is now always 8 bits per colour.
  • Fix: "timing issue" or no picture after switching displays (e.g. capture card to monitor).
  • Fix: black screen / link training errors at boot on some setups.
  • Fix: 1440p shifted to the left with some displays and capture cards (e.g. Elgato 4K X).

Updating from v1.0.3–v1.1.1 (no reflash)

One update bundle brings any of these to v1.2.0: kernel, drivers and settings. Your games, files and settings stay. Also works if you're running one of the hdmi-test kernels. On the PS5 (in a terminal or over SSH, password ps5), with a network connection:

cd ~ && curl -LO https://github.com/VivaLaVent/ps5-bazzite-deck/releases/download/v1.2.0/ps5-bazzite-deck-v1.2.0-update.tar.xz && curl -LO https://github.com/VivaLaVent/ps5-bazzite-deck/releases/download/v1.2.0/ps5-bazzite-deck-v1.2.0-update.tar.xz.sha256 && sha256sum -c ps5-bazzite-deck-v1.2.0-update.tar.xz.sha256 && tar xJf ps5-bazzite-deck-v1.2.0-update.tar.xz && bash ps5-bazzite-deck-v1.2.0-update/update.sh

It checks the download, makes a backup, installs, and prints DONE plus an undo command. Then reboot and run the loader as usual. cat /etc/ps5-bazzite-deck-version then shows v1.2.0. If you added hdmi.rearm=0 or amdgpu.force_1080p=1 to cmdline.txt as a workaround, you can remove them now.

From v1.0.2 or older: reflash.

Newer: update to the latest version with one command: bash <(curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/VivaLaVent/ps5-bazzite-deck/main/tools/update-latest.sh) (see the latest release).

  2. Open ps5-bazzite-deck-v1.2.0.img.7z.001 with 7-Zip (Windows) / Keka (macOS) / 7z x (Linux) → you get ps5-bazzite-deck.img.
  3. Flash it to a 32 GB+ USB drive or SSD with Rufus (or dd on Linux) and boot with the loader.

Known issues

  • First boot is slow; the screen can stay black for a few minutes.
  • Which firmware versions are supported depends on rmux's PS5 Linux loader: see its releases.

v1.1.1 – 40-CU unlock opt-in again

Choose a tag to compare

@VivaLaVent VivaLaVent released this 23 Oct 13:55

What's new

  • The 40-CU unlock is opt-in again. On some consoles the 4 extra GPU compute units cause green dots and other artifacts, a purple tint or crashes; that's the silicon lottery, the units were switched off at the factory for a reason. v1.1.1 runs with the normal 36 by default.
  • Want to try 40? In a terminal or over SSH, then reboot:
    sudo sed -i -e 's/amdgpu\.ps5_cu_unlock=[0-9]*/amdgpu.ps5_cu_unlock=3/' -e '/ps5_cu_unlock/!s/[[:space:]]*$/ amdgpu.ps5_cu_unlock=3/' /efi/cmdline.txt && sudo cat /efi/cmdline.txt

    dmesg | grep active_cu_number then shows 40. Your setting stays across in-place updates from now on.
  • Otherwise the same as v1.1.0 (same kernel and drivers).

Updating from v1.0.3–v1.1.0 (no reflash)

On v1.1.0 and only want the fix? This one command switches the 40-CU unlock off (in a terminal or over SSH), then reboot:

sudo sed -i 's/ *amdgpu\.ps5_cu_unlock=[0-9]*//' /efi/cmdline.txt && sudo cat /efi/cmdline.txt

Or the full in-place update (from any of v1.0.3–v1.1.0): kernel, drivers and settings. Your games, files and settings stay. With a network connection:

cd ~ && curl -LO https://github.com/VivaLaVent/ps5-bazzite-deck/releases/download/v1.1.1/ps5-bazzite-deck-v1.1.1-update.tar.xz && curl -LO https://github.com/VivaLaVent/ps5-bazzite-deck/releases/download/v1.1.1/ps5-bazzite-deck-v1.1.1-update.tar.xz.sha256 && sha256sum -c ps5-bazzite-deck-v1.1.1-update.tar.xz.sha256 && tar xJf ps5-bazzite-deck-v1.1.1-update.tar.xz && bash ps5-bazzite-deck-v1.1.1-update/update.sh

It checks the download, makes a backup, installs, and prints DONE plus an undo command. Then reboot and run the loader as usual. cat /etc/ps5-bazzite-deck-version then shows v1.1.1. Coming from v1.1.0, it switches the 40-CU unlock off once; a setting you add afterwards is kept.

From v1.0.2 or older: reflash.

Newer: update to the latest version with one command: bash <(curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/VivaLaVent/ps5-bazzite-deck/main/tools/update-latest.sh) (see the latest release).

Before and after the first boot

  • In Bazzite, on first boot: turn HDR off and set RGB range to Full, in both Gaming Mode and desktop mode.

v1.1.0 – latest PS5 patches, 1440p120 + 1440p60, 40 GPU compute units

Choose a tag to compare

@VivaLaVent VivaLaVent released this 23 Oct 11:23

What's new

  • Based on rmux's latest PS5 kernel patches.
  • 1440p120 always available if your TV/monitor offers it (no cmdline.txt option needed anymore).
  • 1440p60 is offered too when your TV/monitor lists 1440p only at 120 Hz.
  • Fix: squeezed, discoloured picture on some 4K TVs (whole picture in the left half): the picture now falls back to 1080p. For 4K60, turn on the TV's enhanced HDMI mode for that port (Samsung: Input Signal Plus, LG: HDMI Ultra HD Deep Colour, Sony: Enhanced format).
  • All 40 GPU compute units instead of 36, on by default. If games crash, freeze or show glitches, change amdgpu.ps5_cu_unlock=3 to amdgpu.ps5_cu_unlock=0 in cmdline.txt.

Updating from v1.0.3–v1.0.7 (no reflash)

One update bundle brings any of these to v1.1.0: kernel, drivers and settings. Your games, files and settings stay. On the PS5 (in a terminal or over SSH, password ps5), with a network connection:

It checks the download, makes a backup, installs, and prints DONE plus an undo command. Then reboot and run the loader as usual. cat /etc/ps5-bazzite-deck-version then shows v1.1.0.

From v1.0.2 or older: reflash.

v1.0.7 – black screen at boot fix, 1440p fix, SSH on

Choose a tag to compare

@VivaLaVent VivaLaVent released this 22 Oct 23:11

What's new

  • Fix: black screen at boot on some TVs.
  • Fix: 1440p picture shifted to the right (1440p60) or down (1440p120). 1440p is now centred.
  • SSH on by default: ssh ps5@<your PS5's IP>, password ps5. Change it with passwd, since anyone on your network can try the default.

Updating from v1.0.3–v1.0.6 (no reflash)

One update bundle brings any of these to v1.0.7: kernel, drivers and settings. Your games, files and settings stay. On the PS5 (in a terminal or over SSH, password ps5), with a network connection:

cd ~ && curl -LO https://github.com/VivaLaVent/ps5-bazzite-deck/releases/download/v1.0.7/ps5-bazzite-deck-v1.0.7-update.tar.xz && curl -LO https://github.com/VivaLaVent/ps5-bazzite-deck/releases/download/v1.0.7/ps5-bazzite-deck-v1.0.7-update.tar.xz.sha256 && sha256sum -c ps5-bazzite-deck-v1.0.7-update.tar.xz.sha256 && tar xJf ps5-bazzite-deck-v1.0.7-update.tar.xz && bash ps5-bazzite-deck-v1.0.7-update/update.sh

It checks the download, makes a backup, installs, and prints DONE plus an undo command. Then reboot and run the loader as usual. cat /etc/ps5-bazzite-deck-version then shows v1.0.7.

The in-place update doesn't switch SSH on; if you want it: sudo systemctl enable --now sshd (and change your password with passwd).

  • PS5 settings, before running the loader: Enable HDMI Device Link off (Settings → HDMI) and Supply Power to USB Ports Always (Settings → System → Power Saving → Features Available in Rest Mode).
  • In Bazzite, on first boot: turn HDR off and set RGB range to Full, in both Gaming Mode and desktop mode.
  • The default password is ps5.

Install (new)

  1. Download all .7z.00* files into one folder.
  2. Open ps5-bazzite-deck-v1.0.7.img.7z.001 with 7-Zip (Windows) / Keka (macOS) / 7z x (Linux) → you get ps5-bazzite-deck.img.

  • 1440p120 is still opt-in: add hdmi.allow_1440p120=1 to the line in cmdline.txt.
