Compression Catalyst

The Compression Catalyst is a non-consumable crafting item used to compress materials that already have a vanilla 9-in-3×3 recipe (e.g. Iron Ingots → Iron Block). Without the catalyst, those recipes would conflict with vanilla Minecraft.

Crafting

The Compression Catalyst is crafted with 8 Redstone surrounding 1 Iron Ingot:

[Redstone] [Redstone] [Redstone]
[Redstone] [Iron Ingot] [Redstone]
[Redstone] [Redstone] [Redstone]

The catalyst stacks to 1 and is not consumed when used in a recipe — it stays in the crafting grid after crafting.

When is the Catalyst Needed?

The catalyst is required for items that would otherwise conflict with existing vanilla recipes. These items use an 8-around-1 pattern (8 of the material surrounding the catalyst) instead of the standard 9-in-grid.

Items requiring the catalyst:

Category Items
Ingots Iron Ingot, Gold Ingot, Copper Ingot, Netherite Ingot
Gems & minerals Diamond, Emerald, Lapis Lazuli, Redstone, Quartz, Coal
Raw ores Raw Iron, Raw Gold, Raw Copper
Nuggets Iron Nugget, Gold Nugget, Copper Nugget
Miscellaneous Bone, String, Resin Clump, Sulfur

Items that do NOT need the catalyst (standard 9-in-grid): Flint, Stick, Leather, Feather, Blaze Rod, Amethyst Shard, and all blocks without vanilla 3×3 recipes.

Decompression

When decompressing a catalyst-compressed item, you receive 8 of the original material (since only 8 were used in the recipe, not 9). Non-catalyst compressions always decompress into 9.
