A Linux that runs Windows apps out of the box — free for everyone to use, and it updates itself safely.

VolnOS is a general-purpose Linux operating system, built on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS, designed to feel familiar and just work for everyday users — no terminal required. It runs many Windows applications without setup, and keeps itself up to date through safe, reversible over-the-air updates.

VolnOS keeps two system copies (slots A and B). When an update arrives:

1. It is downloaded and written to the inactive slot — your current system keeps running untouched.
2. On reboot, VolnOS switches to the updated slot.
3. If the new version fails to start correctly, VolnOS automatically rolls back to the previous working slot.

Your personal files and settings live on a separate data partition, so updating the system does not touch them. (As with any system, keep backups of anything important.)

VolnOS uses Wine to run Windows software. Wine is a compatibility layer, not an emulator — a large number of applications run well, but not every Windows app works perfectly.

• Storage: because VolnOS keeps two system copies plus your data partition, allow generous space — roughly 25 GB or more recommended

1. Go to https://volnos.org and download the latest image.
2. Write it to a USB drive and boot from it, then follow the installer.
3. After install, open Settings → Updates to make sure you're on the latest version.
4. To run a Windows program, just open its .exe or .msi.

• Issues — reproducible bugs and concrete, trackable requests.

When reporting a bug, please include your VolnOS version, your hardware, and clear steps to reproduce.

Development happens within the core team, but users shape the project. The most valuable things you can do:

• Report bugs, and confirm issues others have hit.
• Request features and tell us what would make VolnOS better for you.
• Share Wine compatibility results — which Windows apps work, and which don't.
• Help other users in Discussions, and tell a friend who'd find VolnOS useful.
• Point out documentation gaps — unclear steps, missing guides, or typos on the site.

VolnOS is built on Ubuntu and other components that carry their own licenses (including copyleft licenses such as the GPL/LGPL). Those components remain under their respective licenses, and the corresponding source for them is made available as those licenses require.
