Mislocated PIE?

Why is DPVTOL.PIE (VTOL propulsion model) located at data/base/misc/researchimds/dpvtol.pie instead of data/base/components/prop/?

Or, why is the VTOL propulsion using DPVTOL.PIE instead of a PIE located in the prop folder?

DPVTOL.PIE is there for historical/legacy reasons, not because the engine requires it to be under misc/researchimds.

The model field in propulsion.json is not resolved relative to data/base/components/prop/; it’s just an asset name. The game’s data loading can find PIEs from the mounted data paths, and MP data can reference assets from data/base, so DPVTOL.PIE still resolves even though it lives under data/base/misc/researchimds/.

For VTOL specifically, that file appears to have been reused as the propulsion/display model rather than having a separate copy under components/prop. So yes, from an organization standpoint it looks misplaced, but functionally it works because the path is not semantically tied to the component type. Moving it would need checking all references/mod compatibility, but the current location is mostly legacy asset layout.
