Terms

The follwing terms are used accross this repo:

  • Firefox may refer to with Firefox-based browsers.
  • Chromium may refer to Chromium-based browsers.
  • Dekstop refers to macOS, Linux, and Windows.

Combinedfox User.js Targets

The combinedfox user.js is designed specifically for recent enough versions of Firefox-based browsers for Desktop for daily browsing for privacy, security, and usability.

We discourage connecting over Tor on browsers other than Tor Browser and discourage applying any user.js on Tor Browser or Mullvad Browser. Use Tor Browser or Mullvad Browser with a truthworthy VPN if your threat model calls for it or for accessing hidden services. Read Fingerprint, Tor Browser, and Mullvad Browser sections for more information.

Enhanced Tracking Protection (ETP) is set to Strict mode with user_pref("browser.contentblocking.category", "strict"); and overriding it is not supported.

Android is not supported. Refer to Android for more information.

Combinedfox Instructions and Extensions Settings Targets

The combinedfox instructions and extensions settings in this wiki cover recent enough versions of Firefox-based browsers for desktop and Android. For iOS, most of them don't apply.

About Browsers

  • Always update browser as soon as possible and always use browsers that update frequently enough. Do not wait on arkenfox, Betterfox, or combinedfox. Avoid small forks since they may result in delayed updates and what they accomplish can generally be accomplished through other means such as configs, user.js, and extensions. Remember that your browser is one of the most security-sensitive components in your digital life. The most notable secure forks are Tor Browser and Mullvad Browser. Read Tor Browser and Mullvad Browser sections for more information. Another exception is Android. The risks still apply, but due to the limitations of what can be configured on Firefox for Android, forks such as such as Fennec F-Droid and IronFox can provide benefits that may offset these risks. Refer to Android for more information.
  • We discourage connecting over Tor on browsers other than Tor Browser and discourage applying any user.js on Tor Browser or Mullvad Browser. Use Tor Browser or Mullvad Browser with a truthworthy VPN if your threat model calls for it or for accessing hidden services. Read Tor Browser and Mullvad Browser sections for more information.
  • On Linux, it's generally discouraged to install browsers from Snap or Flatpak since sandboxing uses unprivileged user namespaces when creating new processes for enforcing more security, which are not available when installed from Snap or Flatpak.
  • For people with higher threat models, note that Firefox-based browsers are less secure than Chromium-based browsers in terms of sandboxing on Linux and Android and exploit mitigations. Refer to madaidans and GrapheneOS for more information. However, also note that Chromium-based browsers might lack enough privacy features for some people.

Refer to PrivacyTests.org for a regular independent report of how default browsers fare in various privacy tests.
