NSMBW 0.1.1: V-Sync, done right

Choose a tag to compare

@WitherBlitz WitherBlitz released this 14 Oct 00:12

This'll be the last update for a while as I attempt to decompile the game starting today, unless someone reports an issue.
I'm aware of the performance issues on lower-end hardware, especially on the phone side of things, Mali GPUs and CPUs like the Snapdragon 835/845's (the Snapdragon 855 CPU seems to be the minimum spec, 60FPS Pixel 4 XL) being too slow (ridiculous for a game this old obviously), I'm working on an engine overhaul that SHOULD support something as slow as a dual core 1.2Ghz CPU and an adreno 225 from what I've seen, but that's only speculation for now haha. the next release will be the decomp of this game with features from the issues page. I haven't given up on this project or anything, it's just taking longer than I expected haha.

V-Sync is back, done right.

  • V-Sync (Windows). A new switch at the bottom of the Video tab, off by default. On, the picture never tears: each frame waits for the display, and the game's own clock follows the display's real refresh, one frame per refresh on a 60 Hz screen, one every third refresh at 180 Hz. Because the two clocks stay in step, frames never pile up waiting for the display, so it no longer slows the game down the way V-Sync in 0.0.10 did (a World 5 tower test that dropped 232 frames then drops none now). Displays whose refresh isn't a whole multiple of 60 (75 Hz, 144 Hz) still get tear-free frames, but keep the game's own 60 Hz clock.
  • It can be switched on and off while playing.

NSMBW 0.1.0: no more flashing platforms, smoother on busy PCs

Choose a tag to compare

@WitherBlitz WitherBlitz released this 13 Oct 23:09

No more flashing platforms, and smoother play on busy PCs.

  • Fixed: platforms flashing white. The moving yellow platforms (most visible in World 5's giant Piranha Plant course) turned white for moments. These platforms change their texture's settings every frame, and on some frames the texture was read as a single blank pixel. The texture is now always read correctly, for these platforms and anything else in the game that does the same.
  • Smoother on busy Windows PCs. The game read its files from disk while you played (the music streams from them), reopening the file every time. On a PC with a lot running (antivirus, sync tools, a hard disk), each read could cost a frame. On Windows the game files (about 340 MB) are now loaded into memory in the background a few seconds after start, so play never waits on the disk. The game also runs at above-normal priority and is excluded from Windows' power-saving slowdown.
  • Better drop reports. Each slow frame logged in console.log now also shows how long went to file reads and to graphics. If you still see drops, attach the newest console.log from Documents\MarioWiiSaveData\Logs to an issue.

Known issue: entering a course or the world map takes a few long frames while the game loads, so the FPS counter dips for a second after a load.

NSMBW 0.0.13: click levels on the world map, View Map fix, frametime graph

Choose a tag to compare

@WitherBlitz WitherBlitz released this 13 Oct 16:47

Click a level to walk there, a View Map fix and a frametime graph.

  • Click or tap levels on the world map. Mario walks along the map's paths to the level (or Toad house, tower or castle) you picked. Click the one he's standing on to play it. Paths that are still locked stop him where the way ends.
  • View Map no longer crashes. Pressing View Map (A) on the world map closed the game: it calls a game function the recompiler had missed. It's translated now.
  • Frametime Graph. A new switch in the Video tab, under Show FPS Counter (and in Settings › Display on Android), draws each frame's time under the FPS counter: green on time, yellow one dropped frame, red more.
  • Dropped frames are logged. Every frame over 20 ms is written to the log with where the time went (game, graphics, presenting), at most 30 a minute. If you see drops, the newest console.log in Documents\MarioWiiSaveData\Logs (Windows) shows the cause; attach it to an issue.

Known issues:

  • Entering a course or the world map takes a few long frames while the game loads, so the FPS counter dips for a second after a load.
  • Platforms in some World 5 courses (e.g. the giant Piranha Plant's course on the map) can turn white for moments.

NSMBW 0.0.12: spinning coins everywhere, saves per game

Choose a tag to compare

@WitherBlitz WitherBlitz released this 10 Oct 20:40

Spinning coins on every device, saves per game, and keybinds kept on Android.

  • Spinning coins are back, on Android too. Animated coins and blocks are now updated on the GPU, so they cost almost nothing: about 1.3 ms a frame on a desktop and 1.6 ms on a Snapdragon 6 Gen 1, full speed on both. The Video tab (and Settings › Display on Android) has a Spinning Coins switch to turn them off.
  • Saves per game (#1). Playing a mod (e.g. New Super Mario Bros. Wii 2: The Next Levels) alongside the original no longer means deleting MarioWiiSaveData:
    • Each game's saves are kept apart. The game you play first after updating keeps your existing saves.
    • A game folder next to NSMBW.exe is now used by that copy even when another game folder is saved. To play two games, extract a second copy of the release and put the other game's extracted folder next to it as game.
  • Android keeps the game's own settings. The app rewrote Config.toml at every start, which dropped settings made in the game, like keybinds for a connected keyboard. They're now kept.
  • On Windows, settings, keybinds and saves already carry over when you update: they all live in Documents\MarioWiiSaveData.

Known issue: platforms in some World 5 courses (e.g. the giant Piranha Plant's course on the map) can turn white for moments. Another issue, being frame pacing problems. I'm releasing a built-in frametime graph HUD for this in 2 days and some improvements to performance off rip.

NSMBW 0.0.11: performance fix (V-Sync and frame rate reverted)

Choose a tag to compare

@WitherBlitz WitherBlitz released this 10 Oct 18:49

Performance fix: V-Sync and the frame-rate setting reverted.

0.0.10 could run much slower than before. This release undoes the changes behind that:

  • V-Sync and the Video tab's Frame Rate setting are removed. Presentation is back to how it worked in 0.0.9. Frame interpolation (Off / 120 / 180) is still in the F10 bar on Windows.
  • The spinning-coin fix is switched off. It re-processed the game's whole 2 MB tile texture every frame, about 4 ms of each 16.7 ms frame on a desktop CPU and far more on phones. Coins are still again until this can be done on the GPU.

Everything else from 0.0.10 stays: clickable menus, Settings in the world map's + menu, the tappable world map buttons, F11 fullscreen and the new splash text.

The repository is now NSMB-Wii-Multiplayer-Recompilation. It's a static recompilation (the game's code is translated to native code), not a decompilation. Old links redirect.

Known issue: platforms in some World 5 courses (e.g. the giant Piranha Plant's course on the map) can turn white for moments.

NSMBW 0.0.10: spinning coins, smoother frame pacing, clickable menus

Choose a tag to compare

@WitherBlitz WitherBlitz released this 09 Oct 07:32

Spinning coins, smoother frame pacing, clickable menus, Settings in the + menu.

  • Coins spin again (and the other animated tiles animate). The game draws each frame of these animations and copies it into its tile texture. Those copies never reached the texture, so it stayed on its first frame.
  • Smoother 60 FPS on Windows. V-Sync is now on by default, so frames reach the display evenly. You can turn it off in the Video tab.
  • Frame Rate setting in the Video tab: 60, 120, 180 or 240 FPS. Above 60 it uses frame interpolation, which is experimental.
  • Click or tap the game's menus. This covers the pause menu (Continue / Exit Course), the Save / Don't Save windows, the world map's + menu, and the world map's Menu / Select World / View Map / Items buttons. Options the game has greyed out stay unselectable, as with the remote.
  • Settings in the world map's + menu, under Quick Save, in the game's button style. The controller can move onto it, and tapping or clicking works too. Back (1) is clickable.
  • F11 switches between windowed and fullscreen on Windows.
  • Splash screen: shorter credit, plus "Report any bugs you find to my github page!".

Known issue: platforms in some World 5 courses (e.g. the giant Piranha Plant's course on the map) can turn white for moments. It's being investigated.

Includes 0.0.9's World 5 tower slowdown fix and Android start-menu settings.

NSMBW 0.0.9: World 5 slowdown fixed, settings on the start menu

Choose a tag to compare

@WitherBlitz WitherBlitz released this 09 Oct 00:03

World 5 slowdown fixed, settings on the start menu.

  • Slowdown fixed (World 5's tower and other courses with animated tiles). The game animates some tiles by copying small 32×32 frames into its big tile texture. The renderer created a full-size texture for every one of those small copies, every frame: about 18 large textures a frame in World 5's tower, more at higher resolutions. Copies are now sized to what they write and their textures are reused. The tower went from 52 fps to a locked 60 fps on a Ryzen 5 5600G + RTX 5070, and runs 56–59 fps on a Snapdragon 6 Gen 1 phone (REVVL 7 5G).

  • Disappearing (white) platform textures on the S26 Ultra note, this still occurs for me, i'll have to fix this later but its not game breaking or anything haha. This doesn't occur on the Snapdragon 6 Gen 1, only the 8 Elite Gen 5 from what I can see.

  • Android: no more ⋯ button. Display (aspect ratio, render resolution, FPS counter, graphics compatibility) and Controls are under Settings on the start menu. In the game, the phone's Back gesture offers Start Menu, Leave LAN Game (in a LAN game) and Quit. The in-game gear (save file screen and pause menus) still changes resolution and the FPS counter while you play.

  • A Config.toml saved with a byte order mark (some editors add one) no longer loses every setting.

Includes 0.0.8's saves in Documents\MarioWiiSaveData on Windows, the gear on the pause menus, and Esc for the + menu.

NSMBW 0.0.8: saves kept across updates, pause-menu settings, Esc for +

Choose a tag to compare

@WitherBlitz WitherBlitz released this 08 Oct 18:32

Saves that survive updates, a settings gear on the pause menus, and Esc for the + menu.

  • Windows: everything is kept in Documents\MarioWiiSaveData. That folder holds your settings (including where your game files are), saves and caches. Extract a new version anywhere and it carries on where the last one left off: no folder prompt, same saves.
    • The first start of 0.0.8 takes over your existing data. It looks in an older version's UserData folder extracted next to it (for example NSMBW-0.0.7-windows-x64 beside NSMBW-0.0.8-windows-x64) and picks the most recently used one.
  • Settings gear on the pause menus. While the world map's + menu or a level's pause menu is open, a gear sits at the top right. Tap it (or click it on Windows) for the same settings window as on the save file screen. Closing the window brings you back to the menu.
    • On Android, the on-screen remote stays up for the menu itself. Taps anywhere off its buttons reach the game.
  • Esc opens the + menu. On Windows, Esc now acts as + (alongside Enter), so it brings up the world map's menu or pauses a level. Esc also closes the settings window. It no longer opens the quit prompt; close the window to quit. Rebind it in Keybinds if you like.
  • Android: saves, settings and the imported game were already kept across updates. That's unchanged.

Includes 0.0.7's real ultrawide, settings gear and rebindable keys.

NSMBW 0.0.7: real ultrawide, settings gear, rebindable keys

Choose a tag to compare

@WitherBlitz WitherBlitz released this 08 Oct 17:54

Real ultrawide, a settings gear, and rebindable keys.

  • Ultrawide done properly. On screens wider than 16:9 (ultrawide monitors, and most phones) Fill no longer stretches the picture. Levels, the title screen, the opening cutscene, the world map and the menus draw wider, so you see more to the sides with nothing squashed or stretched. The level camera itself is wider, so enemies and objects appear at the real edges of your screen. LAN games still play in 16:9, so every device sees the same thing.
  • Settings gear next to the Couch / LAN button on Select a File:
    • Video tab: Match Screen Resolution renders at your screen's own resolution and fills it. While it's on, the multiplier is greyed out. Otherwise each multiplier comes in two forms on a wide screen: "1x (480p)" keeps 16:9 with black bars, and "1x Ultrawide" fills the screen. Show FPS Counter is off by default.
    • Keybinds tab: all 12 keyboard controls (directions, 2, 1, A, Shake, Tilt Left/Right, +, −). Pick one and press the new key; Esc cancels. Reset Defaults puts them back. They're saved to Config.toml.
  • Android: changes made in the gear (resolution, ultrawide, FPS counter) are kept by the app, and its own ⋯ > Display menu now offers Match screen and 1.5x.

Includes 0.0.6's tappable menus, 0.0.5's Couch / LAN button and app icon, and 0.0.4's shader cache fixes.

NSMBW 0.0.6: tap the menus

Choose a tag to compare

@WitherBlitz WitherBlitz released this 08 Oct 11:11

Tap the menus. On Android, tap the game's own menus instead of using the on-screen remote, which now hides itself while they are up. On Windows, click them with the mouse.

  • Strap and title screens: tap anywhere.
  • Select a File: tap a file, Free-for-All, Coin Battle, Erase or Copy. The game's cursor moves there and picks it, just as if you'd used the remote.
  • Select Players: tap 1–4 players, or Back.
  • Couch / LAN button and the LAN menus: tap their buttons (Join, Create Room, rooms, Start, Cancel, OK). The LAN window gained a tappable (1) Back.
  • The on-screen remote comes back for the world map, levels, and the multiplayer join screens.
