Playdex v0.15.0
Playdex 0.15.0 - rename games, borrow another game's details, and titles you can see
New
- Rename any game from its panel. A name you type is kept: fetching
metadata again will not put the provider's name back over yours. - Copy details from another game. For a game no provider knows because
it is a change to one it does - a hack of Super Mario 64 can take Super
Mario 64's description, developer, release date and artwork while
keeping its own name. The artwork is copied rather than shared, so
removing the original later does not take it away, and a later fetch
leaves the borrowed cover alone. - In the Console appearance, right-click a game to open its options.
Before, that needed a controller or the Options button at the bottom.
Fixed
- The game's name was missing from the top of its panel in the desktop
layout. The heading was being drawn above the edge of the scrolling
area and cut off, so it never actually showed. It does now.
Playdex v0.14.0
Playdex 0.14.0 - your own artwork, and a backdrop that holds
New
- Choose an image for any game, in its own panel. Some games are never
going to be found - a hack, an obscure dump, somebody's homebrew - and
no amount of refetching will produce a cover for them. Any PNG, JPEG,
WebP, GIF, BMP or AVIF will do, and it is copied into the library so it
does not vanish when you tidy your Downloads folder. - A picture you chose is never replaced by a fetched one. Fetch
everything again leaves it alone and updates the rest. Use fetched
artwork hands the decision back.
Changed
- In the Console appearance, landing on a game with no artwork used to
drop the blurred background to flat grey, which looked like the screen
had broken rather than like that one game having no cover. It now
keeps the last picture it had until another game with artwork replaces
it. - The website has the new Playdex wordmark in place of the old icon and
the text beside it. The app is unchanged.
Playdex v0.13.0
Playdex 0.13.0 - macOS and Linux builds
New
- Playdex now builds for macOS and Linux as well as Windows. Releases
carry a universal .dmg covering both Apple architectures, a .deb and an
AppImage, and the Windows installers as before. The in-app updater
works the same on all three.
Fixed
- Cheats and save handling did nothing on macOS and Linux. Both find
RetroArch through its config file, and the only place that file was
looked for was the Windows location, so on any other system there was
nothing to read. It is now looked for where each platform actually
keeps it, Flatpak included.
Notes
- The macOS build is not notarised, so the first launch needs the usual
right-click -> Open.
Playdex v0.12.0
Playdex 0.12.0 - fetch everything again, and panels that match the skin
New
- Settings -> Metadata -> Fetch everything again. Until now a metadata
fetch only looked up games that had none, so there was no way to go
back over a game whose art you wanted replaced. This goes over the
whole library, including games that already matched, and takes what it
finds. Useful when a provider has added art since you last looked, or
when you first scraped without credentials. It uses a fair bit of a
daily ScreenScraper allowance on a large library, so it is in Settings
rather than beside Scan, and the progress card can cancel it.
Fixed
- Settings, play history and a game's own page opened in the wrong
colours on the Channels appearance: they kept the dark scheme from the
desktop layout and appeared as a near-black panel on a white screen.
They now follow whichever appearance is running, full screen, the same
way they already did on the others.
Playdex v0.11.1
Playdex 0.11.1 - fix the Channels page arrows
Fixed
- The page arrows in the Channels layout did nothing. The arrow was
turning the page and then a second rule, meant to follow your
selection when it moves off screen, was turning it straight back
because the selected game was still on the page you had just left.
Turning a page now takes the selection with it, so there is nothing
to disagree about. Back still returns to the first page.
Playdex v0.11.0
Playdex 0.11.0 - back to Playdex, and a Channels appearance
New
- The app is called Playdex again. Your library moves itself across on
the first launch, the same way it did going the other way: games,
playtime, favourites, artwork, cheats, DATs and disc playlists all
come with it, and there is nothing to re-scan. - Channels, a new appearance under Settings -> Appearance. The one light
layout: a page of framed channels you move between with arrows rather
than scrolling, a soft blue glow on the one you are on, and a tray
along the bottom with the clock in the middle. A page that is not full
shows the empty sockets rather than just stopping.
Changed
- Blades and Showcase are gone. If you had either selected, you will
open on the desktop layout and can pick another.
Fixed
- Highlighting something in the top row no longer has its glow sliced
off. Every scrolling list now leaves room for the ring and shadow of
whatever is selected, instead of clipping it at the edge. - Carrying a library across now works even when an empty folder for the
new name already exists, which happens if an older version is ever
opened after updating. It previously gave up in that case and left the
library where it was.
Romcade v0.10.0
Romcade 0.10.0 - four new appearances
New
- Four more layouts under Settings -> Appearance, bringing it to seven.
Everything works the same in all of them, as before. - Arc. One column down the middle of a dark screen, lit from one side.
The row you are on steps toward the light. - Blades. Panels side by side, one open and the rest turned edge-on as
coloured spines. Back closes the open one. The only light layout. - Showcase. A strip of tiles along the top with the selected game spread
out underneath it, artwork filling the screen behind. - Browser. A column of cards standing in a slow-drifting field, with the
details listed beside whatever you are on.
All four are drawn from scratch in our own CSS. Nothing is traced from
anyone else's artwork, icons or typefaces, and none of them is named
after the hardware it nods at.
Romcade v0.9.1
Romcade 0.9.1 - fix missing box art after the rename
Fixed
- Box art, screenshots and logos went missing after updating to 0.9.0.
The rename moved the folder your library lives in, but the artwork was
recorded by its full location inside the old folder, so every image was
still being looked for at an address that no longer existed. The files
were never lost. This update repoints them and your art comes straight
back on the next launch, with nothing to re-scrape. - The same repair covers ROM hacks, whose patched game files live in that
folder too, so a hack that would no longer launch after 0.9.0 works
again.
Nothing you have set is touched: your own ROM folders are left exactly as
they are, and the repair only ever rewrites paths that point into the old
application folder.
Romcade v0.9.0
Romcade 0.9.0 - Playdex is now Romcade
Same app, new name.
New
- Playdex is now Romcade. The window, the installer and the desktop
shortcut all change with it, and the desktop layout that was called
Playdex is now called Romcade too. - Your library moves itself. Everything is stored in a folder named
after the app, so the first launch after this update carries the whole
thing across: games, playtime, favourites, artwork, cheats, DATs and
disc playlists. Nothing to re-scan and nothing to set up again. - Romcade is now open source under the MIT licence.
Notes
- If you had both installed somehow, an existing Romcade library is
never overwritten; the old folder is left alone instead. - Updates keep working. The old download addresses redirect to the new
ones, and the key your copy already trusts is unchanged.
Playdex v0.8.1
0.8.1 - stop the pad launching games while one is running
Playing with a controller kept starting more copies of the game. The pad
loop never stopped when a game launched, so every button pressed inside
the emulator was read by the library sitting behind it too - and with a
game tile focused, the confirm button means "play this". Every press in
the game started it again.
Three things now stop that. The pad loop is switched off entirely while a
game is running. It also ignores the pad whenever the window does not
have focus, which covers an emulator started any other way; that is
driven by real blur and focus events and starts from "we have focus", so
a webview that reports focus oddly leaves the pad working rather than
silently dead. And launching refuses outright to start a second game
while one is already up, which covers the mouse as well.
Quitting a game while still holding a button used to relaunch it, for the
same reason in reverse: an empty map of held buttons made the held button
look like a fresh press. The loop now spends its first frame recording
what is already down before anything counts.
Site: plainer copy throughout, and the pictures are now slots. Drop a PNG
into docs/shots/ and it replaces the drawing on its own - see the README
there for the names. Until then the drawings stand in, so the page is
never broken and never shows an empty box.
