The first preview release of Wiiather, a WeatherStar 4000 for the Nintendo Wii. It's a homebrew app that shows live National Weather Service data in the style of The Weather Channel's 1990s local forecast.

Warning

This is an early preview. It has been tested in Dolphin but not yet on a real Wii. Do not rely on it in life-threatening weather situations; use NOAA Weather Radio or official NWS channels for alerts.

Features

  • Current Conditions, Latest Observations, Local Forecast, Extended Forecast, Almanac and Hazards screens, cycling like the original
  • Scrolling crawl for active NWS alerts
  • ZIP code location picker, with a suggestion based on your IP address on first launch
  • Optional background music from MP3s on the SD card
  • HTTPS with certificate checks, and signed automatic updates to the trusted certificate list

Install

  1. Download Wiiather-0.0.1.zip and extract it to the root of your SD card, so the app ends up in apps/wiiather/.
  2. Optionally, copy .mp3 files to apps/wiiather/music/ for background music.
  3. Launch Wiiather from the Homebrew Channel. The Wii needs a working internet connection and the correct date and time.

Controls

  • +: choose a new location
  • A: turn music on or off
  • In the location picker, use the D-pad to change and move between digits, A to save and B to cancel.

Known limitations

  • US locations only, since all data comes from the NWS.
  • 4:3 display only; 16:9 support is planned.
  • No radar screen yet.
  • Wiiather checks GitHub daily for updates to its trusted certificates. If those updates ever stop, a future version will be needed to keep connecting. See the README for details.
