What's Changed
Notable Changes
- Patch release. 1.9 fixes unexpected behavior introduced in 1.8.
- Automatic updates are supported from 1.4 onward. Versions before 1.4 must be updated manually from the release page.
- Open folder. On Windows it now scrolls to the selected file, which 1.8 could leave out of view.
Bug Fixes
- Open folder on a show's or manga series' page opens the deepest folder that holds all its files, so a show kept in a single season folder opens that season folder.
- The folder icon on a title's episode and volume rows in Media sits level with the row's arrow.

What's Changed
Notable Changes
- Open folder. A title's page in Media has an Open folder button that opens the folder holding the title. A folder icon on each episode or volume, and on each Search result, opens its folder with that file selected, ready to open in the program you choose. On Linux the folder opens without the file selected, and on Termux the buttons are hidden.
Bug Fixes
- The Japanese Guide names Anki's menu 「ツール」, as a Japanese Anki shows it, in the Aobana Reibun section.

What's Changed
Notable Changes
- Aobana Reibun. A new Anki add-on fills cards with example sentences and media from Aobana, Nadeshiko and Immersion Kit. The Guide tab's Anki add-on: Aobana Reibun section explains how to install it.
- Safer library indexing. When more than half of a media library's indexed files are missing, Aobana pauses their removal and asks you to confirm. A file that is present but cannot be read keeps its existing index and is tried again on the next run.
- Duplicate selection. Select all selects duplicate copies while keeping the chosen original. The button changes to Deselect all when every eligible file is selected.
Enhancements
- Furigana rendering handles long sentences in linear time, with the same displayed text and readings.
- Library progress uses structured events so filenames and titles containing line breaks do not interrupt progress reporting.
- The source code is organized into an
aobanapackage, with separate search, indexing, and server modules. Run from source withpython -m aobana. - Page styles, translations, and scripts are separate files that the browser can cache.
Bug Fixes
- Remove anyway retries only the media whose missing files were held for confirmation.
- Parallel search workers leave the update check and library warm-up to the server.
- Imported and stored Favorites keep supported fields and safe furigana markup.
- Search treats
%and_in excluded terms literally, and title filters match the selected folder exactly. - Concurrent Settings changes preserve each saved value, and resetting search caches clears title counts too.
- Book titles stored with escaped characters such as
あdisplay as text, and image-only books whose pages are all labelledpageare listed as image-only instead of indexed as text. To find them, Check library reads books of up to 200 sentences once more after the update; a 46,859-book test library held 6. - Request threads release furigana database connections and share a bounded tokenizer pool.
- On Termux, folder paths remain visible while unsupported Open folder buttons are hidden.
- Updating from 1.6 removes the earlier root program files. Windows, macOS, Linux, and Termux launchers use the package entry point.

What's Changed
Notable Changes
- Book recovery and image-only filtering: Check library identifies
.epubfiles with no extractable text. Index library excludes those files automatically and rechecks previously short books once to recover prose missed by older EPUB reading rules. In a measured test library, 91 previously empty books yielded 348,997 sentences. Automatically excluded files are checked again if they change. - Language review and categorized filter list: Books with 30% to 50% Japanese among language-bearing lines appear under Review language and are not selected for exclusion by default. Left out of the index groups excluded files by the same categories as the check above, and each section has Select all.
- Faster Settings loading: Settings shows saved values immediately while it checks for current values in the background.
Enhancements
- If an existing index needs its display-length or furigana lookup tables, Library shows Optimize tables beside Index library. Click it to build the missing tables from the index without rereading subtitle, book, or manga files. A new library or an index with complete tables does not show the button.
- The table action checks existing databases even when their media are turned off in Settings, and uses the indexing worker count you chose. The manual maximum now includes every detected CPU thread.
- The indexing speed popup no longer interrupts the first Index library click. Worker settings remain directly below the Library buttons.
- On the first start after updating, returning users with an existing database are asked to run Check library, review its findings, and then run Index library. The check rereads previously short books; established long books keep their cached results.
Bug Fixes
- Books with short extracted text whose chapters place prose directly inside
<body>or in<span>and<br>runs, and books whose chapter or table-of-contents paths use..relative segments, now have more of their text indexed. - Table optimization no longer stops after building display lengths when Aobana runs with packaged Python.

What's Changed
Notable Changes
- Filtered search and pinned titles: The Filtered switch lets you search several chosen titles together. Chosen titles stay at the top of the sidebar until you remove their pins or close the tab; All clears the current choice while keeping the pins.
- Faster chosen-title searches: Aobana reads the chosen books, subtitle shows, or manga series without scanning the whole library, then counts matches in other titles in the background. Measured searches of chosen titles on large test libraries returned in under a second where a whole-library scan took minutes.
- CPU workers for search and indexing: Separate Settings cards let you choose worker counts. Automatic uses half your usable CPU threads. Long searches can start extra workers after a chosen delay, and the first Index library after updating shows the recommended count.
- Manga page images: A manga result's page number in Search, Favorites, or the Media reader opens the matching image in one reusable browser tab when that image is available.
- Media sorting: Media now sits next to Search and can sort titles by name, episode/chapter/volume count, or line count in either direction.
Enhancements
- Moving the database folder in Settings now includes companion files and shows bytes and time remaining. Open database connections are closed first so a move on the same drive can rename files directly.
- Media and the search sidebar load 500 titles at a time. The search options wrap one by one on narrow windows.
- Long Check library reports draw as you scroll, keep selections across the report, and cap long failed or skipped lists at 100 visible entries.
- Long-task notices wake other Aobana tabs when indexing or Check library starts. Re-index notices now include manga when its reading rules change.
- Search workers start after 10 seconds by default; setting the delay to zero starts them immediately. Their count and indexing workers can be changed separately.
Bug Fixes
- An EPUB with an unreadable chapter is listed as failed with its file and reason during indexing and in Check library. Older books indexed with no chapters are checked once on the next index run.
- Open folder now reports a failure instead of appearing to do nothing. On Windows, it opens Explorer directly and brings the folder window above the browser.
- A chosen title with no matches, or one outside the selected media category, no longer triggers a whole-library search. Opening a large library no longer briefly shows Your library is empty while titles load.
- Leaving a search tab or starting another search cancels the old server search so it stops using CPU.
- Manga only indexing starts without the subtitle/book estimate, Check library is disabled for that scope, and manga appears in the completed-run summary.
- Search-worker guidance no longer claims that every machine slows down above 16 workers.
- Direct Termux upgrades from 1.0–1.3 move old settings and databases into the current
data/anddata/db/layout while keeping media files and custom folder choices.

What's Changed
Notable Changes
- Manga: Aobana now searches manga too, from the
.mokurofiles that mokuro writes. Turn Manga on in the Settings tab and put the files in its folder, one folder per series; the page images are not needed. - Manga text is the OCR that mokuro saved in the
.mokurofile. Aobana does not re-read the page images, so a misread word or a missed bubble shows as mokuro read it. Aobana puts each page's text in reading order (the right page of a spread first), keeps a bubble read twice only once, and restores ellipses and dashes the OCR turns into other characters. - Furigana in
.asssubtitles: the small furigana lines are now placed over their kanji instead of being left out. Tested on 502.assfiles with furigana (43,009 readings), about 99.5% sit on the right characters. So that your files get them, the first Index library after this update re-reads your.assand.ssafiles;.srtfiles and books are not re-read. - Settings tab: media, folders, the databases folder, the search cache, favorites, the port and the reset have a tab of their own. A media you don't use can be turned off: it is hidden everywhere and its database is kept, or removed with Delete database.
- Setup in the app: the installer no longer asks for folders. A new install asks at its first start which media you use and where their folders go; after this update you see the same window once, filled in with your folders.
- An index made by 1.3 or earlier gets a one-time table build (the Library tab's Update, or any index run) that reads no file. It keeps the furigana lookups in the index instead of reading every furigana line into memory, which on a 122 GB library held up the end of a run and the opening of a book for about 20 minutes. Until it runs, a large library searches and opens books as slowly as on 1.3.
Enhancements
- Reset all settings to default (Settings tab) brings back the setup window, filled in with the media and folders you have now; nothing is deleted.
- Check library keeps, by default, a book in the books folder itself over its copy in a subfolder, and a subtitle file in a show folder over a loose copy. Each duplicate list has an Invert selection button.
- The size and time estimate before indexing is kept until your files change, so it is not worked out again.
- The first Index library asks about the library check again after a reinstall.
- The notice that recommends re-indexing comes once for every version that needs it.
- The Guide covers manga and the Settings tab.
- The uninstaller ticks nothing by default, and says what each of Aobana's data folders holds.
- Running the Windows setup as administrator over a per-user install now updates that install.
Bug Fixes
- Installing over a running Aobana no longer stops at Preparing to Install: the setup closes Aobana first.
- On a large library, the end of an index run and opening a book in the Media tab no longer wait minutes.
- A search for one media that is off, or has no database, no longer answers with the other media.
- When the chosen titles have no hit, the search sidebar lists all titles again instead of an empty list.

What's Changed
Notable Changes
- Faster search on big libraries: common words are found in up to half the time, with half the memory.
- Search cache (optional, off by default): turned on in the Library tab, searches that took a while are saved on disk, so they show at once, even after a restart. Useful for very large libraries; the same box shows the space it uses and clears it at any time.
- Search inside a title: in the Media tab, an opened show or book has its own search bar, for its episode and chapter names or for the text of its lines.
- Several titles at once: in the search sidebar, click titles to add them to the filter or take them out; All clears it.
- The first Index library after this update adds a table to the index, once: it stores how long each line is when shown (about 10 bytes a line), so a search no longer works that out for every match. Together with the other search changes, searches for common words take about 45% less time.
Enhancements
- The databases now have a folder of their own,
db, inside Aobana's data folder. The first start after the update moves them there; a folder you chose yourself stays as it is. On Android, settings, logs and the databases now live in thedatafolder inside Aobana (data/dbfor the databases). - The Library tab shows its folder figures at once, from the last count, and keeps them up to date in the background.
- When indexing, the library check or a first count took more than a minute, a notice says so on every tab until you close it.
- The Guide shows the version and has a Changelog button.
- Book chapter lists and the Media tab's counts open much faster on a large book library.
- Check library counts steadily through a large library, and Stop stops it within a second.
- A chapter named only by a file number shows its place in the book instead.
Bug Fixes
- A book with an extremely long paragraph no longer breaks the results page.
- Showing the context of a book line no longer hangs on a large library.

macOS: Not signed by Apple — on first launch, click Open Anyway in System Settings › Privacy & Security
What's Changed
Notable Changes
- Update automatically: when a new version is out, Aobana can download it, install it and start again by itself, on Windows, macOS and Linux.
- After an update, the first start shows what's new in that version.
- The Change buttons in the Library tab open your system's folder picker.
- Changing the port keeps your settings, and the Library tab can reset every setting to its default.
Enhancements
- The top bar stays in place when you scroll, on every tab.
- Clearer wording throughout the Japanese and English interface, and English counts read naturally ("1 show", "1 book").
- Buttons that show only an icon are named for screen readers.
- The welcome and what's-new windows are wider, and every window keeps the same text size on any screen.
Bug Fixes
- Searching a word like だ no longer returns lines that only contain な, で or じゃ.

What's Changed
Notable Changes
- Aobana now runs on macOS and Linux.
.ass/.ssasubtitles are read, not only.srt.- Check library in the Library tab finds subtitles that aren't Japanese, extra copies of the same episode, and duplicate books, and can leave them out of the index without moving or deleting anything.
- Books are split into chapters much more accurately: in reading order, novels that came out as one long chapter are split at their numbered headings, and sections show the chapter they belong to. Books indexed by 1.0 are updated with one click in the Library tab (you are asked once, at the first start).
- Much cleaner episode and book titles: release tags and codec names are gone, episode numbers are read from far more naming styles (
S02EP01,1x01,第12話,シーズン4 #1…), and books keep their volume number. Tested on a 194,618-file subtitle library: 17,920 titles come out cleaner.
Enhancements
- Indexing uses several processes: with 8, 6,501 subtitle files in 32 s instead of 229 s, and 168 books in 33 s instead of 234 s, with identical results. It can also do subtitles or books on their own, and shows a size and time estimate first (with a warning above 10 GB).
- Indexing and the library check can be stopped. Nothing saved is lost, whether a run is stopped, crashes or its window is closed, and the next run carries on.
- The first time you index, Aobana offers to check the library first.
- Bilingual subtitles are indexed with their Japanese only.
- Subtitle files are indexed at any depth in your folder, including loose files at the top.
- One-tap updates on Android, and the install makes the two empty folders to put your files in.
- Big libraries: the Media list and the search sidebar load a page at a time, and a long search shows the time left.
- The default folders are now
SubtitlesandBooks; 1.0's defaults are renamed once when you update.
Bug Fixes
- Invisible characters and HTML codes from some subtitle rips no longer show in results.
- A file that can't be read no longer stops indexing.
- Switching tabs during a random search keeps the same results.
- Furigana over a short word is no longer spread apart.
