AfterFrame 0.5.11 — LUTs, Pick and Reject Flags, and Builds for macOS 12 and Intel
AfterFrame 0.5.11 brings LUTs to the editor on the Mac, Lightroom's pick and reject flags, tags for many photos at once and keyboard shortcuts you can change. Tools now open on the settings you used last. The Mac app also comes in builds for macOS 12 and for Intel Macs, and on Windows, videos get their covers and HEVC plays.

The two macOS 12 builds are new. They are the same app without People, Scene Depth and Stickers, which use Apple's on-device models that need macOS 14: there these say "Needs AfterFrame for macOS 14 or later" (需要 macOS 14 及以上版本的 AfterFrame). On an Apple Silicon Mac with macOS 14 or later, take the first one. The Intel build reads RAW files with an older LibRaw (0.21), which can't decode DNGs compressed with JPEG XL.
The Windows installer isn't signed yet. When Windows says "Windows protected your PC" (Windows 已保护你的电脑), click More info (更多信息), then Run anyway (仍要运行). To update, run the new installer: your catalogs and settings stay. LUTs, like Stickers, People and Scene Depth, are in the macOS app only for now.
Highlights
LUTs
The editor has a LUT tool, second in its tool rail, that applies .cube LUTs to a photo.
- The photo through every LUT: a grid of previews, grouped by pack and folder, with search. Click one to grade the photo, or step through them with the arrow keys.
- Strength from 0 to 100 %, and Hold to see the original. The saved photo is graded at full size, after the crop and before margins, frames and text.
- Your LUT library: Add LUTs either imports LUT files, copied into AfterFrame's LUT library with duplicates skipped, or adds a LUT folder, read where it is with nothing copied. LUTs you put into either folder in Finder show up when you come back to the app. Settings ▸ Library ▸ LUTs shows the library's size and the folders it reads.
- Favorites and the LUTs you used recently come first. Filters show only favorites, or hide Log LUTs.
- Log LUTs, made for S-Log3, F-Log, LogC and other Log video footage, are tagged Log from their name, and you can change the tag. On a photo they usually come out dark and oversaturated.
- RAW files are graded on Apple's rendering of the RAW, not the camera's embedded JPEG, which has the camera maker's look baked in. The first time you open the tool on a RAW, rendering it takes a second or two, a few seconds for a 100 MP file.
The LUT tool reads 3D .cube LUTs. 1D LUTs aren't supported yet. AfterFrame comes with no LUTs of its own: add yours first.
Pick and reject flags
- P picks, X rejects and U clears the flag on the selected photos, as in Lightroom. Hold Shift with a flag or star key to move on to the next photo as well.
- Picked photos show a white flag. Rejected ones fade, with a red crossed flag. The lightbox shows the flag and the stars, the Inspector has Pick (留用) and Reject (排除) buttons, and the gallery's right-click menu has a Flag (旗标) submenu.
- Flag (旗标) on the filter bar shows picked, rejected or unflagged photos, and works in smart collections too.
- Delete Rejected Photos… (删除排除的照片…, ⌘⌫, also in the Edit menu) takes the rejected photos of the view on screen out of the library, or moves them to the Trash.
- Flags are kept in the catalog. Nothing is written to your files.
- The lightbox's Proof mode (校样) moves from P to ⌘P.
Orientation filter
- Orientation (方向) on the filter bar: Landscape (横图), Portrait (竖图) and Square (方图). It goes by how the photo shows, so a camera's upright shot is a portrait even when the camera stored it sideways.
- The justified and waterfall layouts, the gallery captions and the Inspector use the size as shown too: an upright shot reads 4000 × 6000.
- A catalog from an earlier version reads its thumbnails once in the background (Photo orientation in Activity). Until then the filter goes by the stored size.
Tags and descriptions
- Add Tags… (添加标签…, T, or the right-click menu) puts one or more tags on every selected photo at once. The tags already there stay.
- One list of tags per photo, yours and the AI's. The Inspector's Tags section is always there, not only on annotated photos. Tagging a photo by hand no longer counts it as AI-annotated, and annotating it again keeps your tags.
- Description (描述) in the Inspector: click to write your own. It is what shows and what search matches. The AI's caption fills in where you haven't written one, and Use the AI's description (改用 AI 的描述) brings it back.
- The AI section is now AI analysis (AI 分析). It also shows the text read in the picture, which wasn't shown anywhere before.
Keyboard shortcuts you can change
- Settings ▸ Shortcuts (快捷键, ⌘/) lists every key the app answers to. Click a key and press a new one, add a second key, or restore the defaults. A key another action already uses asks before taking it over.
- The menus show your keys, and your changes go into settings backups.
- New keys: T Add Tags, C compare two photos, ⌘↵ Show in Finder, ⌘D deselect, ⌘F search, \ show or hide the filter bar, = and - thumbnail size.
Tools remember your choices
Tools open on what you set last, after a restart too:
- Text: the next + Text has the look of the text you styled last.
- Collage: the canvas ratio, gap, padding, corners and background, the export width and folder, the batch settings, and the layout you last picked for each number of photos. Defaults (恢复默认) puts the canvas back.
- Split: the panel ratio and the output folder, with Back to the original's folder (改回原图所在文件夹).
- Also the LUT strength, the AI Repaint and Handwriting styles, the sticker outline, the gallery's view, thumbnail size and sort, the compare layout and the last Settings tab.
The crop ratio, the frame template, the LUT and the filters aren't remembered, so a photo or a view never changes without you asking.
Windows
- Videos get their cover frame, duration and capture time on import, HEVC (H.265) videos from an iPhone play, and hovering a video shows its frames. This uses FFmpeg (an LGPL build), which makes the installer about 42 MB bigger.
- Open With (打开方式) lists the editors installed on the PC, found through their Start menu shortcuts.
- A DNG compressed with JPEG XL can't be decoded at full size on Windows. The editor now says so: edits and saves use the DNG's preview, and the message gives both sizes.
Also in this release
- Edited photos are saved at JPEG quality 92 instead of 80. This was the case for any save with a text or sticker layer, a border or a wash, and after Apply.
- Collage exports are encoded once: a JPEG at quality 92 from a lossless render, and a PNG that keeps every pixel. Before, a JPEG export was a JPEG of a JPEG, and a PNG export was a copy of JPEG pixels.
- The editor shows the photo while it loads: the catalog's preview, dimmed, under a spinner. The Save button spins while saving.
- Watched folders: a photo moved out of a watched folder and put back, for example with Put Back from the Trash, no longer keeps its "Original file moved or deleted" badge until you refresh.
- Collage: the Add Images and Replace Image pickers no longer shake when the photos almost fill the window.
- Buttons on the accent colour are readable in both themes: the sticker panel's Save, the text panel's Apply and a notification's action.
- A star or flag key pressed right after clicking a photo no longer shows the photo's old value.
