Torchlight Recomp v0.12.5-beta

Pre-release

Choose a tag to compare

@github-actions github-actions released this 17 Oct 04:04

Linux, Windows and macOS (Apple Silicon) beta. Needs your own copy of Torchlight for Xbox Live Arcade (asked for on the first start).

New

  • Mods' classes and pets can be chosen when you create a character, with their own icons and portraits; skill trees with a third column work. At the start, the game lists the characters last saved with other mods, like the PC version does.
  • Button icons for your controller: PlayStation (PS3, PS4, PS5) and Nintendo icons, chosen from the controller you use. Options, Controls lets you pick them and swap A/B on Nintendo controllers.
  • Frame rate limit "Auto": follows your display's refresh rate (up to 144; 60 on battery; the Steam Deck is detected, but untested). Existing settings keep their limit.
  • About one frame less latency with vsync, and slightly higher frame rates in fights and in the town.
  • Options in three sections (Video, Controls, Extras); starting with mods is faster, and the first start with a large mod pack shows its progress ("Preparing mods...") instead of a black screen.

Fixed

  • With mod packs that redraw item icons (Enhanced Edition, JCC - Main), the game's own items and skills showed empty frames.
  • Saves that the mod list could leave unreadable are repaired at the start, after a backup.
  • When the renderer could not start, the window stayed black; now a message says why.
  • A texture pack in replacements (TNNR) could crash the game when changing level.
  • macOS: vsync now follows the display's refresh (no more periodic judder at 60 fps).

Known limitations

  • Mods' new affixes and level pieces are not added yet, mods must be unpacked folders, and mods are chosen by editing mods.dat.
  • Most PC achievements have not been earned in actual play yet.
  • Untested on the Steam Deck.

Windows: the zip is not code-signed, so the first start may show SmartScreen's "Windows protected your PC". That is Windows being cautious with programs it has not seen downloaded often, not a detection of anything harmful: click More info, then Run anyway.

macOS: the app is not signed or notarized by Apple. That is macOS refusing apps from developers without a paid Apple account, not a detection of anything harmful. To open it the first time:

  1. Drag Torchlight Recomp from the .dmg to Applications and double-click it. macOS says Apple could not verify it is free of malware: click Done (not Move to Trash).
  2. In System Settings → Privacy & Security, click Open Anyway next to the message about Torchlight Recomp.
  3. The warning comes back with an Open Anyway button: click it and confirm with your password or Touch ID.

Later starts open directly. Playing with the keyboard: see the README.

@github-actions github-actions released this 13 Oct 00:58

Linux, Windows and macOS (Apple Silicon) beta. Needs your own copy of Torchlight for Xbox Live Arcade (asked for on the first start).

New

  • PC mods. Mods made for Torchlight on PC load: put each mod folder in the mods folder next to your saves; the order comes from PC's mods.dat. New items, monsters and changed data work, and mods' textures and models show as on PC. Your saves are backed up when the set of mods changes, and items from a removed mod are taken out with a notice. Every PC achievement can be earned now, including the ones for playing with mods. See the mods guide.
  • Texture packs: packs meant to be copied into PC's Pak.zip go in the new replacements folder.
  • macOS on Apple Silicon (M1 or later, macOS 13.3 or later), as a .dmg.
  • Faster: higher frame rates, above all in fights and in the town. The native renderer no longer does the Xbox graphics chip's work, and off-screen parts of the level are not drawn.
  • Frame counter (F3): frame rate, 1 % low, long frames, and the frames that reach the screen.

Fixed

  • Wayland showed the game with 16-bit colour.
  • A save could be lost to a crash or power loss right after saving.
  • On Linux, a save renamed to another spelling left the old file behind.
  • A crash left the game hung instead of ending it.
  • The log folder grew without limit (now 50 MB a run, 200 MB in all).
  • When the renderer could not start, the game crashed instead of saying why.

Known limitations

  • A class added by a mod is not offered at character creation.
  • Mods' new affixes and level pieces are not added yet, mods must be unpacked folders, and mods are chosen by editing mods.dat.
  • Most PC achievements have not been earned in actual play yet.
  • Untested on the Steam Deck.
  • Android and a launcher come in the next iteration.

Windows: the zip is not code-signed, so the first start may show SmartScreen's "Windows protected your PC". That is Windows being cautious with programs it has not seen downloaded often, not a detection of anything harmful: click More info, then Run anyway.
