Preference Chain v0.2.0 — Research Preview

Preference Chain is a standalone Windows application for calculating distances between preference rankings, including rankings with ties (weak orders).

The software implements the pairwise preference-distance calculation from an original Excel/VBA research tool associated with the methodology described by Vanacore, Marmor, and Bashkansky (2019).

Main features

  • Comparison of two preference rankings, including ties.

  • Calculation of cosine similarity and normalized angular distance.

  • Loading preferences from TXT or CSV files.

  • Export of numerical results to CSV.

  • Standalone Windows application requiring no installation of Python, Jupyter, or Microsoft Excel.

Download and installation

  1. Download PreferenceChain.exe from the Assets section below.

  2. Save the file to your computer.

  3. Double-click to launch the application.

Scientific publication

Vanacore, A., Marmor, Y. N., & Bashkansky, E. (2019). Some metrological aspects of preferences expressed by prioritization of alternatives. Measurement, 135, 520–526.

DOI: https://doi.org/10.1016/j.measurement.2018.11.012

The publication examines preference chains, distance measures based on cosine similarity, and metrological aspects of preference assessment, including repeatability and reproducibility.

Researchers using the methodology are encouraged to cite the original publication.

Validation

The pairwise calculation was compared with the reference example in the original Excel workbook.

Metric | Result -- | -- Cosine similarity | 0.555555556 Normalized angular distance | 0.312505619

Six automated tests passed, and the standalone Windows executable was successfully tested.

Research Preview notice

This version implements the pairwise preference-distance calculation from the original VBA tool.

Full validation of the original workbook's distance matrices and other research functionality remains pending. The software should not yet be considered a complete implementation of all analyses described in the publication.

Windows security notice

The executable is not digitally signed. Windows may display an "Unknown publisher" warning. If you have verified the file's origin and your organization's security policy permits it, you may select More info → Run anyway, where available.

Do not disable Windows security protections.
