Kanvas v0.1.0
Release notes
# Kanvas v0.1.0
Kanvas `0.1.0` is the first public release of the Gradle plugin and native GPU rendering runtime.
Kanvas is designed to integrate into existing Kotlin/JVM desktop projects without forcing the application to be rewritten around a custom rendering engine. Apply the plugin, point it at the desktop app, choose a backend, and let Kanvas handle the rendering path underneath the application.
## Highlights
- First public release of the `org.yurie.kanvas` Gradle plugin
- Native GPU rendering integration for Kotlin/JVM desktop applications
- Compose Desktop / Skiko renderer interception
- Modern Skiko picture-replay capture support
- Native runtime provisioning and build integration
- `kanvasDoctor` environment and project diagnostics
- `kanvasCompatibility` runtime compatibility reporting
- Build, run, package, and runtime lifecycle tasks
- Renderer audit and capture tooling
- Zero-edit compatibility adapter for testing external projects
## Graphics backends
Current implemented backend paths include:
- macOS: Metal
- Linux: Vulkan
- Windows: Vulkan
- Windows: OpenGL
- Windows: Direct3D 9
- GDI software/reference path
Using:
```kotlin
kanvas {
backend = "auto"
}is recommended for most projects.
Compatibility work
Renderer compatibility work in this release includes support and investigation around:
- Compose Desktop 1.8.2
- Compose Desktop 1.11.1
- Skiko 0.9.4.2
- Skiko 0.144.6
Compatibility detection does not imply complete rendering parity across every application, GPU, driver, or Compose operation.
Status
Kanvas is still pre-release software.
The plugin architecture, native runtime, renderer takeover, backend integration, diagnostics, and packaging path are functional, but several areas are still under active development:
- full Compose rendering parity
- complete text and effect coverage
- broader GPU and driver verification
- native Wayland attached rendering
- full ARM64 release verification
- expanded packaging and distribution testing
Documentation
See the repository documentation for:
Thanks to everyone testing Kanvas this early. Bug reports with renderer audit output, GPU/backend information, Compose version, and Skiko version are especially useful.
