This release adds options for the ring tether, the Combi Ring that ties you to your partner (Issue #43).

OPTIONS > GAMEPLAY (all off by default; used only in the five attractions' levels, never in TIME ATTACK):

  • TETHER (WEAK / NORMAL / STRONG): makes the ring's pull half or one and a half times as strong. It works in 2P too.
  • PARTNER FOLLOW (1P): your partner follows you instead of pulling you back.
    • The ring no longer drags you, unless you hold HOLD (B), so the slingshot still works.
    • When you run ahead past the ring's limit, your partner is pulled after you rather than you being yanked back.
  • PARTNER SOLO (1P): play without a partner.
    • The partner is sent away the way the game itself does it after the Combi Catcher, and kept away: hidden, out of the way, no ring, and the camera on you.
    • Hold CALL (A) for half a second to bring the partner back for the rest of that life, for any spot that turns out to need two.
    • Techno Tower's lifts, which wait for both characters, take you alone.
    • As in the game whenever no partner is in play, a hit with no rings ends the run.

Fair play: TIME ATTACK always plays the original tether, and ghosts are replayed with it. Awards are paused, and speedrun bests aren't kept, while any of these options is changed (the same rule as cheats).

Save states: save states now remember whether the partner was called back in SOLO, so states from earlier versions won't load. They already couldn't, since states only load in the version that made them.

Validation:

  • Windows: all 86 CTest cases pass. New tests:
    • with the options off, the frames are identical to before (Botanic Base 1, 6000 frames, and Techno Tower 2, 4000 frames, of random input);
    • each strength changes how far the ring stretches;
    • FOLLOW pulls the partner instead of the player;
    • SOLO draws no partner or ring, takes the lift alone, finishes a level, and brings the partner back on a held CALL;
    • 6000-frame random runs in three combinations of options, without getting stuck;
    • lockstep holds with every option.
  • Lockstep: all 33 sweep runs with random input are bit-identical. The sweep was also run with the options on.
  • macOS (M1): all 83 CTest cases pass and lockstep is bit-identical on arm64.
  • Linux: all 83 Linux CTest cases pass.
  • Packages: the packaged Windows and Linux builds pass the startup tests.
  • Android: the APKs have not been tested on a device for this release.

Downloads: the Windows x64 zip, the Linux x64 tar.gz, the macOS arm64 zip, the iOS .ipa, and two Android APKs: arm64-v8a/x86_64 (the usual one) and armeabi-v7a (32-bit ARM). Both APKs use version code 36 and the same signing certificate as 0.11.1, so they update in place.

You must supply your own Knuckles' Chaotix (Japan, USA) ROM. No ROM image or game assets are included.
