This release extends the menu text mods, so a translation can now cover the whole game, banners included.

  • Mods: menu text drawn as sprites: a new mdsprite_<name>.txt + .png mod replaces a group of Mega Drive sprites with one picture.
    • It covers the big menu banners (DATA LOAD, PLAY, DELETE, TRAINING, PLAY STYLE, PLAYER SELECT...), the TRAINING zone names, the character names and the SOUND TEST titles, which the game draws with sprites rather than background tiles.
    • A group is recognised by its sprites' tiles and their distances. It is still recognised while it slides in or out past the screen edge.
    • DUMP GRAPHICS now also lists the sprites on each screen, with suggested groups ready to copy into a pattern.
  • Menu text fixes (mdtext_, from 0.7.0):
    • A replaced word no longer flashes back to the original for a frame when the game recolours it, for example when you change slot on DATA LOAD.
    • It also stays replaced when the game clears and rewrites the text within one frame.

The game itself plays exactly as in 0.7.0; these changes only affect what installed mods draw.

Validation:

  • Windows: all 57 CTest cases pass. New tests:
    • sprite text matching (groups, flips, overlaps, sprites partly off screen, X wrap);
    • the DATA LOAD banner replaced on screen;
    • the slot headers staying replaced through every frame while the panel slides (this test fails on 0.7.0).
  • Lockstep: all 33 sweep runs with random input are bit-identical, and lockstep runs with a full translation's patterns loaded are bit-identical too.
  • macOS (M1): all 54 CTest cases pass and lockstep is bit-identical on arm64.
  • Linux: all 54 Linux CTest cases pass.
  • Packages: the packaged Windows and Linux builds pass the startup tests.
  • Android: the APKs have not been tested on a device for this release.

Downloads: the Windows x64 zip, the Linux x64 tar.gz, the macOS arm64 zip, the iOS .ipa, and two Android APKs: arm64-v8a/x86_64 (the usual one) and armeabi-v7a (32-bit ARM). Both APKs use version code 30 and the same signing certificate as 0.7.0, so they update in place.

You must supply your own Knuckles' Chaotix (Japan, USA) ROM. No ROM image or game assets are included.
