Lumina 1.0.0

A fast, dependency-light image editor with a PSD engine written from scratch —
layered PSD read/write, native Curves/Levels, vector masks, layer effects and ICC
colour management. No native modules, no cloud, no telemetry.

Downloads

Platform File How to run
macOS (Apple Silicon) Lumina-1.0.0-mac-arm64.dmg open the DMG, drag to Applications; first launch: right-click → Open (unsigned build)

Step-by-step instructions, system libraries per distribution, self-signing and
source builds: docs/INSTALL.md.

What's in this release

  • PSD engine — reads 8/16/32-bit RGB, CMYK and Grayscale documents (flat and
layered, RAW/RLE/ZIP/ZIP+prediction, nested compositions, clipping and global
masks, lfx2, vmsk, Crv and other typed blocks) and writes layered PSDs
Photoshop opens, with optional ZIP compression and CMYK output.
  • Adjustment layers — Curves, Levels, Brightness/Contrast, Invert, Posterize,
Exposure, Hue/Saturation, Threshold, Vibrance; non-destructive with live sliders.
  • Editor — 27 blend modes in linear space, groups, clipping and layer masks,
editable text layers, history panel, navigator, selection/lasso/magic-wand,
brush, clone, gradient, shape and a stack of photographic effects.
  • Colour — standards-compliant sRGB ICC profile (D50 + Bradford chad +
parametric curve); verified within 1 level of LCMS.
  • Formats — PNG, JPEG, TIFF, BMP, QOI (byte-exact C interop), WebP/GIF/DNG on
read; PSD/PSB on read and write.
  • Two apps, one engine — npm run web for the browser, Electron shell for the
desktop (macOS, Linux, Windows) over a sandboxed app:// scheme.

Verification (reproduce it yourself)

Check Result
30 real Photoshop documents vs. psd-tools raw planes 30 / 30 match — 0 differing pixels
Layered PSD round-trip (RLE / ZIP+prediction / CMYK), composited by psd-tools 0 / 455,400 pixels differ
Per-layer channel planes vs. encoder input identical
Automated tests (npm test) 269 passing (incl. 25 in a real headless browser)
ICC identity transform vs. LCMS (50k random colours) max 1 level, mean 0.0014
npm test
npm run verify:psd
npm run verify:corpus:download

Notes

  • Builds are not code-signed (no paid developer certificates): macOS needs a
    one-time right-click → Open, Windows shows a SmartScreen prompt.
  • Known limitations: Lab/Duotone/Multichannel are not decoded, Smart Objects are
flattened, embedded CMYK ICC profiles are ignored on import, and 32-bit files
    open but save at 8/16-bit.
