v0.4
What's new
- Hardware decoding: H.264 and HEVC (8 and 10-bit) now play on the PS5, up to 4K. Heavy files that stuttered before, like 4K HDR films at 70+ Mbit/s, now play smoothly with the CPU almost idle. Everything else (AV1, VP9, MPEG-2, VC-1, DVDs…) still plays as before.
- HDR10 output: on an HDR TV, HDR10 and HLG videos now go out as real HDR.
- HDR on an SDR TV: HDR videos are now tone mapped, with natural colours instead of the grey, washed-out (#8)
- Dolby Vision films play as their HDR10 base layer instead of failing
- Opus audio in MKV, WebM and MP4 now plays (#7)
- Faster network shares (SMB): videos start sooner and high-bitrate files keep up much better
Fixed
- Black screen with some 4K HDR videos (#9), most often over SMB
- Jumping (±10 s, seeking) in MP4 files didn't resume
- The whole app froze for seconds when a stream (IPTV) was stuck and you opened something else. The next video now just starts once you leave.
- Classic / Modern look switching by itself after a restart (with full access, VLC could pick up another copy's settings)
Notes
- HDR output needs HDR set to "On When Supported" or "Always On" in the PS5's Screen and Video settings, and a TV/monitor input that accepts HDR.
- Optional switches in
settings.txtin the app folder:hw_decode=0: software decoding onlyhdr_output=0: never switch the TV to HDR (tone map instead) ·hdr_output=2: switch even if the PS5 doesn't report an HDR TV
