Release list
Lenz 0.0.1 (beta)
First public release, as a beta.
Lenz is a side-by-side diff viewer, git client and merge tool for Linux and macOS, built in Rust, with two frontends over one shared core: lenz, a native GUI, and lenz-tui, a terminal app. Run either with the arguments you would give git diff, or give it two files or folders. lenz log browses the repository and its pull requests; lenz merge (or git mergetool) resolves conflicts.
Install
- Homebrew (macOS Apple Silicon, Linux x86_64 and aarch64):
brew install aantoniadis/lenz/lenz - Tarball: unpack one of the archives below and put
lenzandlenz-tuion yourPATH. On macOS the GUI is insideLenz.app, andlenzis a symlink into it. - From source:
cargo install --locked --git https://github.com/aantoniadis/lenz lenz(andlenz-tui).
Every package installs both lenz and lenz-tui. Requirements: git 2.30 or later; on Linux, glibc 2.35 or later (Ubuntu 22.04, Debian 12, Fedora 36 or newer).
The macOS build is ad-hoc signed, not notarized. Homebrew handles that; if you download the tarball with a browser instead, clear the quarantine attribute before the first launch: xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine lenz-0.0.1-aarch64-apple-darwin.
What is in 0.0.1
- Side-by-side and unified comparison with word or character highlighting, whitespace modes, four scroll modes, syntax highlighting, and change folding; apply and undo of individual changes.
- Image comparison (2-up, swipe, onion skin, difference) and a rendered Markdown preview, inline or side by side.
- Repository view: history and branches, staged and unstaged changes, blame, file history, commit details, and GitHub pull requests through
gh. - Merge View for three-way merges and a version picker for
git mergetool, with conflict navigation, selective takes and safe saves. - Themes (Darcula, Light, Catppuccin, Tokyo Night, Gruvbox, custom TOML, and following the system or Omarchy), configurable editor hand-off, crash diagnostics with a prepared issue draft.
- Both frontends expose the same commands; see the terminal guide for terminal-specific limits.
Known limitations in this beta
- macOS: the GUI and TUI use more memory on large text files than on Linux, and each git process costs about 20 ms, so terminal repository workflows are slower than on Linux. Details and numbers are in the performance overview.
- Linux packages are built on Ubuntu 22.04; older glibc is not supported.
- No Windows build.
- The Arch Linux
lenz-binpackage mentioned in the README is not published yet.
Checksums
Each archive has a matching .sha256 file. Verify with sha256sum -c (Linux) or shasum -a 256 -c (macOS).
Please report problems at https://github.com/aantoniadis/lenz/issues. Crash reports are written locally and never sent anywhere; Lenz prepares an issue draft you can review and post.
