FlightOut 0.6.2 Alpha: towns and villages, paved taxiways and aprons, aerial haze
FlightOut 0.6.2 Alpha fills the Kashmir valley with its towns and villages, paves the airfields' taxiways and aprons, and lets the distance fade into haze.
New
- Towns and villages. The valley's towns and villages stand house by house, where they are on the real map, and cast their own shadows, even far beyond the usual shadow distance.
- Airfields with taxiways and aprons. Taxiways and aprons are paved into the ground with their markings, and the airfields have their buildings.
- Aerial haze. Buildings, trees and runways fade into the distance with the land, so the valley reads deep and far.
- Lens flare and vignette in the outside views.
Changed
- Clouds are gone for now. The volumetric clouds were removed: they cost too much frame rate and did not look right. A new kind of cloud is planned for a later release.
- Sky settings. The weather choices are now Clear, Fair, Hazy, Overcast, Fog and Rain. Overcast and rain still dim the sun and soften the shadows; fog and haze still close in the distance.
Compatibility
- Update to 0.6.2 to fly online: the airfields' ground changed, and the official server runs 0.6.2.
- Your settings and key bindings carry over.

FlightOut 0.6.1 Alpha: moving engine nozzles, heat haze and a life-size Su-27
FlightOut 0.6.1 Alpha brings the Su-27 to its real size, gives it moving engine nozzles and heat haze, and fixes the stutter when flying low and fast.
New
- Engine nozzles that move. The AL-31F's nozzle is modelled flap by flap: 16 outer flaps, 16 inner flaps on each side of the throat, and the seals between them. Deep inside you can see the afterburner's flame holders.
- The nozzles follow the engine as on the real jet: wide open at idle, closing as you push the throttle up to full dry power, and opening a little when the afterburner lights. The flame now starts exactly at the nozzle.
- Heat haze. The air behind the engines shimmers: faint at idle, stronger with power, strongest in afterburner. Look past the jet at the runway behind it.
Changed
- The Su-27 at its real size. The jet was drawn about 4% too long. It is now 21.94 m long and 14.70 m across, with the real wheelbase and main wheels, and stands at its real height: the missiles under the intakes are well clear of the runway.
- Wheels on the runway. The tyres stand on the runway's surface instead of sinking into it.
- Tree shadows reach much further. Low over a forest, the trees ahead already have their shadows (800 m on High instead of 350 m), and it costs no frame rate.
- Missile warning. A radar locked on you is always heard on the SPO-15, even when you skim a ridge.
- Wing damage. When a wing comes off, its pylons and missiles go with it.
- The weapons page reads GROUND CREW: WORKING while the crew loads your jet.
Fixed
- The stutter, flash and sound hiccup when flying low and fast, every few seconds, is gone.
Compatibility
- 0.6.1 does not fly online with 0.6.0: the jet's size and how it stands on the runway changed for everyone. The official server runs 0.6.1.
- Your settings and key bindings carry over.

FlightOut 0.6.0 Alpha: flares and chaff, and smoke that looks real
FlightOut 0.6.0 Alpha gives the Su-27 flares and chaff, makes every smoke in the game look and behave like real smoke, and adds DCS-style outside views.
New
- Flares and chaff. The Su-27's APP-50 dispensers in the tail booms carry 96 flares and 96 chaff cartridges, fired upward as on the real jet.
- Tab fires flares, ` fires chaff (both can be rebound, and there is a binding for both at once). F4 steps through the four dispenser programs.
- The cockpit's countermeasures panel has its lamps, the CHAFF and FLARE buttons, the PROGRAM knob and the ARM switch; the EW page shows what is left.
- Flares decoy heat-seeking missiles, chaff decoys radar-guided ones, and neither is a sure thing: each missile sees through some decoys. Chaff works best when you turn square to the missile (the notch).
- Rearming and respawning refill them. AI pilots use them too when they defend.
- Outside views as in DCS. F1 cockpit, F2 your aircraft, F6 your missile in flight, F8 your target.
Changed
- One smoke for everything. Missile motors, flares, a damaged engine, a fuel leak, torn-off parts, the ejection seat and burning jets all follow the same rules: smoke leaves its source thin, opens out and thins as it ages, drifts with the wind and hangs in the air. Burning jets trail long black smoke.
- Smoke you can see from far off. Missile and flare trails stay a visible line from many kilometres away instead of disappearing, and still keep their shape: fine at the missile, wide where the smoke is old.
- Missile smoke trails hang for about a minute, with smoother curves.
Coming next
- Air defence sites. Surface-to-air missile sites (SA-6, SA-15, SA-10, SA-13 and an early warning radar) are being built and tested. They are not on the map in this release.
Compatibility
- 0.6.0 does not fly online with 0.5.x: the multiplayer protocol changed for flares and chaff. The official server runs 0.6.0.
- Your settings and key bindings carry over.

FlightOut 0.5.2 Alpha: an honest cockpit, check six, and the player manual
FlightOut 0.5.2 Alpha makes the Su-27's cockpit tell the truth, helps head-tracking pilots check six, and comes with a full player manual at flightout.app/docs.
New
- The player documentation. Getting started, controls, settings, the world, the Su-27's cockpit, instruments, warnings and systems, flying it from take-off to landing, and its radar, displays and warning receiver: flightout.app/docs.
- Check six with head tracking. When you look far round behind you with OpenTrack, the view lifts by itself, up to 18 degrees looking straight back, where the jet chasing you usually is. The docs have recommended OpenTrack settings for a webcam.
Changed
- Cockpit indications that match the jet.
- The hydraulic lamps, gauge and SYS page now show the real hydraulic pressure, so battle damage shows up and running out of fuel no longer lights them.
- LOW FUEL: the lamp and the chime now both come at 1,000 kg.
- OVER G now warns at the limit for your weight, not a fixed 8.6 G.
- The cockpit clock shows the time of day in the game.
- Lamps that never lit now work: ACS FAIL after the autopilot drops out in a stall, O2 LOW, the TRIM lamps and the red LAUNCH lamp.
- SYS page: each engine shows its own rpm and temperature.
- EW page: shows CM NONE instead of chaff and flare counts that never changed (there are no countermeasures yet).
- GND mode: the HUD shows NO STORES instead of a bomb you can't carry.
Fixed
- The practice approach (P) now switches the autopilot off, so it no longer fights the auto-throttle.
- The auto-throttle closes the throttle to idle at touchdown instead of leaving it up.
- The missile time-to-impact on the HUD no longer overlaps the BVR and WVR labels.
- Linux downloads carry the right install.sh and README for their architecture.
Compatibility
- 0.5.1 and 0.5.2 fly together online: the multiplayer protocol is unchanged.

FlightOut 0.5.1 Alpha: guns, missiles and AI that fights back
FlightOut 0.5.1 Alpha arms the Su-27: the GSh-30-1 cannon, the R-27 family, the R-73 and the R-77, AI pilots that use them, and a warning receiver that tells you when one is coming.
New
- The gun. The GSh-30-1 30 mm cannon with 150 rounds. Press 5 for GUN mode: the HUD shows a lead computing sight on a locked target in range, otherwise the funnel. Space fires.
- Missiles. R-27R and R-27ER (radar guided), R-27T and R-27ET (infrared), the R-73 dogfight missile with its seeker tone, and the R-77 with its own radar. Each flies its own way: motor burn, drag, how hard it can turn, how far it reaches at each height. The HUD shows the launch zone (Rmax, the no-escape range, Rmin), LA when you are in range, and the time to impact.
- What each missile needs. The R-73 and R-27T/ET need their seeker locked on his heat. The R-27R/ER need your radar lock and fly on it. The R-77 can be fired with a lock or blind: its own radar takes over near the target, or finds one by itself.
- Stores and the ground crew. Choose what you carry from the WPN page on the right display: presets or station by station. On the ground, the crew rearms, refuels and reloads the gun.
- Being shot at. The warning receiver flashes and sounds a launch tone for radar guided missiles and for an R-77 that has locked you. Infrared missiles give no warning: watch for the smoke.
- AI pilots fight. With training traffic on, the bandits find you, lock you, fire radar missiles and R-73s, use the gun at the merge, and defend themselves against your missiles (cranking, dragging and diving away).
- Hits you feel. A warhead bursting close by: the bang, fragments striking the airframe, the structure groaning, and a jolt.
- Kills you can see. A jet hit by a missile burns and falls in stages, wings tearing off, and breaks into recognisable pieces on the ground. From 15 to 30 km away you still see the flash, the burning wreck and its smoke.
- Terrain. Hills hide you from radars and from missile seekers. A missile that loses you behind a ridge flies on blind.
Fixed
- The landing gear could jam and its motor sound keep playing after a hard takeoff.
- A torn-off canopy could stay stuck in front of the camera in the outside views.
Compatibility
- Everyone needs 0.5.1 to fly online. The multiplayer protocol has changed: 0.5.0 players can no longer join play.flightout.app.
- Your settings and key bindings carry over.

FlightOut 0.5.0 Alpha: damage, fire and kills
FlightOut 0.5.0 Alpha makes the Su-27 breakable: real damage, fire, ejection and kills, and brings the radar and warning receiver into multiplayer.
New
- Damage you can see and feel. The airframe is made of parts, each with its own strength: nose, cockpit, fuselage, engines, wings, fins, stabilators and gear. A damaged jet flies on, harder to control, and only blows up when its fuel tanks explode or it hits the ground hard.
- Wings that break. Pull too hard with the AOA limiter off and the wings fail past their limit load. A wing comes off whole, with the missiles on it, and tumbles away while what is left of the jet rolls and falls.
- Fire where the fuel is. The Su-27 carries most of its fuel in the centre fuselage, some in each wing and some between the engines. A part that tears off takes its fuel with it and burns as it falls, flames turning into black smoke. A leaking tank that is not burning trails a thin white mist.
- Engines, hydraulics and the pilot. A hit engine loses thrust and can catch fire (FIRE lamps on the warning panel). A torn wing or tail bleeds the hydraulics (HYD lamps) and the controls go slow, then dead. A hit in the cockpit can kill the pilot.
- Ejection. Hold Ctrl and press E three times: the canopy goes, the K-36 seat fires, and you come down under a parachute while the jet carries on without you.
- Canopy lock. A LOCK lever next to the canopy switch. Open the canopy at speed, or fly with it unlocked, and the air takes it.
- Kinder ground. Tail strikes, wingtip scrapes, collapsed gear and belly landings damage the jet instead of blowing it up.
- Explosions. Crashes on the ground, in the water and in the air, with wreckage, burning debris and smoke that hangs over the valley.
- Multiplayer kills. Everyone sees the same damage, fires, ejections and parachutes. A jet that goes down is credited to whoever hit it last, shown in a kill feed.
- Radar and warning receiver in multiplayer (new since 0.4.2): the N001 radar's search and lock, and the SPO-15's search and lock tones from other players' radars.
Changed
- Training traffic (the AI jets) is off by default. Turn it on in Settings.
Compatibility
- Everyone needs 0.5.0 to fly online. The multiplayer protocol has changed: 0.4.x players can no longer join play.flightout.app.
- Your settings and key bindings carry over.

FlightOut 0.4.2 Alpha: FlightOut Lite and real forests
FlightOut 0.4.2 Alpha brings real forests to Kashmir and launches FlightOut Lite, the game in your browser.
New
- FlightOut Lite at run.flightout.app. The same jet, cockpit and Kashmir map in the browser, no install. The map streams in as you fly and the game is kept by the browser, so later visits start fast. Multiplayer stays on the desktop version for now.
- Real trees. Fir, spruce and pine on the mountainsides; poplars and willows in the valleys, with the odd chinar turning gold. Close up every tree is a detailed model with real shadows; farther out it becomes a light picture of itself, and from high up the forest is part of the ground. Same frame rate as before.
- Forests where the map has them. Trees now grow in the forests the land cover shows, in their real clusters and chains, with their edges where the dark green of the ground ends. Open meadows and fields stay open.
- One loading screen. From PLAY to the runway: one bar that says what it is doing, the menu blurring into it and the flight coming into focus out of it.
Fixed
- Trees no longer glow on the side away from the sun.
- Switching into the cockpit shows it at its own zoom from the first frame, and the mirrors show a fresh picture.
- The ground never covers a runway, near or far.
Compatibility
- Multiplayer protocol unchanged: 0.4.0, 0.4.1 and 0.4.2 players can fly together on play.flightout.app.
- Your settings and key bindings carry over.

FlightOut 0.4.1 Alpha: stability update
FlightOut 0.4.1 Alpha is a stability update for 0.4.0.
Fixed
- Changing graphics settings no longer freezes or crashes the game. Changing render scale, MSAA, window mode or the quality preset could hang the game for several seconds and then crash it. Settings now apply in a fraction of a second, in flight, while paused and from the main menu.
- The main menu no longer lags after a flight. Leaving a flight left the menu drawing with cloud data that had already been released, which caused errors every frame, stutter and occasional crashes.
- No more crash when quitting. The game now closes cleanly.
- Less glare on the canopy. Seen from behind with the sun ahead, the canopy glass flared into a large white (sometimes purple) ball. The sun now shows as a soft sheen across the glass.
Compatibility
- Multiplayer protocol unchanged: 0.4.0 and 0.4.1 players can fly together on play.flightout.app.
- Your settings and key bindings carry over.

| Linux x86_64 | FlightOut-0.4.0-Linux-x86_64.tar.gz |
| Linux arm64 | FlightOut-0.4.0-Linux-arm64.tar.gz |
What's new
- Volumetric clouds you can fly through: scattered cumulus, broken, overcast, fog and rain decks at varied heights, sunlit and self-shadowed, with their shadows on the ground, trees and jets. Clouds are fixed in the world and drift with the wind, and reach the horizon when you are high above them. Contrails are lit by the sun.
- Map screen (M): opens close around your jet and gets sharp as you zoom in. Kashmir's border is drawn in red. Right drag measures bearing, distance and time between any two points, and holds on to jets, airfields and marks. Hover an airfield or a jet for its details.
- Cockpit: rear-view mirrors on the canopy arch (fold with I), a HUD drawn from the same attitude as the combiner, a flight path marker you can cage (X), and a flight director for the ILS.
- Pilot body: the head moves under G, and you get grey-out, tunnel vision, blackout, G-LOC and red-out. Airframe vibration and breathing. OpenTrack head tracking (Settings, Cockpit).
- Night: afterburner light on the tail and the ground, a cockpit torch, and airfield lights that fade with distance and haze.
- Performance: forest planted in the background, lighter terrain, cockpit screens paced, and many smaller savings.
- Multiplayer: network protocol 6, so a full server's update fits in one packet.
Please update
0.4.0 uses a new network protocol, so it cannot play with 0.3.x. The official server is on 0.4.0, so everyone needs this version to join.

FlightOut 0.3.1 Alpha: lag compensation
FlightOut 0.3.1 Alpha: other players' jets shown where they really are, even on a slow connection.

| Linux arm64 | FlightOut-0.3.1-Linux-arm64.tar.gz |
What's new
- Lag compensation: other jets are now drawn where their pilot actually is right now, not where they were one ping ago. At around 200 ms ping they used to appear about 125 ms behind (roughly 25 to 30 m at fighter speeds); now it is within about 10 ms, so formation flying and merges line up.
- Still smooth: prediction and corrections are blended in, never snapped, as in a military flight sim.
Please update
0.3.1 uses a new network protocol, so it cannot play with 0.3.0. The official server is already on 0.3.1, so everyone needs this version to join.
