A desktop overlay that lets Claude Code — or any MCP client — see your screen and draw on it.
Ask "how do I export this?" and the agent looks at your screen, then circles the button and numbers
the steps directly on your desktop. It does not control your mouse or keyboard — it sees and it
points; you stay in control.
Install
Download ScreenMcpOverlay-Setup-0.1.0.exe below and run it. The app appears in your system tray.
The build is unsigned, so Windows SmartScreen warns on first run — click More info → Run anyway.
Prefer no installer? Take ScreenMcpOverlay-Portable-0.1.0.exe instead: one self-contained file that
installs nothing.
Then right-click the tray icon → Copy MCP URL, and register it with your agent:
claude mcp add --transport http screen-overlay "PASTE_THE_URL_HERE" --scope userFull instructions, including the VS Code extension, are in the
README.
What's in it
- 14 MCP tools — capture, annotate, UI Automation tree queries, OCR, waits, focus and scroll.
- Anchored drawings that follow their target when a window moves, resizes or relayouts.
- Cheap before expensive —
describe_windowreads a window's controls as text, measured ~3.6x
cheaper than a screenshot of the same window, and every line can be pointed at directly. - Z-order-correct window capture — asking for a covered window renders that window, not whatever
happens to be drawn on top of it. - Invisible to screen capture, so the overlay's own drawings never contaminate the next
screenshot or your screen share. - Any MCP client, several at once — the CLI, the VS Code extension, Cursor and Codex all connect
to the same HTTP endpoint and drive the same screen.
Privacy
Everything stays local. Screenshots go to a temp folder and are deleted on exit, there's no
telemetry, and the server listens on loopback behind an access token, refuses requests carrying an
Origin, and has DNS-rebinding protection — a web page cannot reach it and read your screen. Every
capture posts a line into the overlay panel, so a screen read is never silent.
Notes
- Windows 10 (2004+) or Windows 11.
WDA_EXCLUDEFROMCAPTUREis Windows-only. - The built-in chat panel needs the Claude Agent SDK, which is proprietary and therefore not
bundled. Run the app from source if you want the panel; everything else is identical. - Qt/QML accessibility coverage is untested.
describe_windowwill tell you which fallback you need.
