Performance regression when upgrading to v0.8.1

Expected Behaviour

Application performance should not be affected by upgrading to AT v0.8.1

Actual Behaviour

Significant latency is experienced which increases in proportion to the course size.

Steps to Reproduce

1. Upgrade to AT v0.8.1
2. Edit a course with a large number of pages and or components
3. Measure response time.

There is an outstanding performance issue in mongoose.
