Initial public release of Moreland — turn an Android tablet into a wired second monitor for Linux/Wayland over USB.

Highlights

  • Plug-and-play: connect the tablet, a virtual monitor appears via Hyprland; unplug, it disappears
  • Zero-copy pipeline: Hyprland → DMA-BUF capture (ext-image-copy-capture-v1) → VA-API hardware encode → USB → hardware decode on the tablet
  • No network exposure — adb forward is loopback-only, nothing leaves the USB cable
  • Automatic resolution matching to the tablet's panel aspect ratio, with manual overrides (--native, --width/--height, --max-width)

Measured performance

(Ryzen 7 5800HS + AMD Vega, Xiaomi Pad 6, USB 2.0)

  • ~33–48 ms glass-to-glass latency
  • 60 fps sustained at 1920x1200
  • 16 Mbps (6% of the USB 2.0 ceiling)
  • 0.6% of one CPU core for capture

Scope

Verified on exactly one setup: Hyprland + AMD VA-API + a Xiaomi Pad 6.

  • Sway: capture should work unchanged, headless output creation not yet implemented
  • KDE (KWin), GNOME (Mutter): not yet supported — see COMPATIBILITY.md
  • Intel/NVIDIA VA-API: plausible, untested

Known limitations

  • No touch or pen input
  • No audio
  • Tablet app must stay foregrounded
  • Resizing the virtual output mid-session restarts the pipeline

See the README for install steps and the docs/ directory for a full per-stage writeup of the architecture.
