Fixes you may have been waiting for

  • macOS: the 0.1.0 and 0.1.1 downloads were built for too new a macOS and showed an "incompatible" icon. 0.1.2 is built on macOS 15 and runs on macOS 15 and later, on Apple silicon (arm64) and Intel (x86_64). Thanks to Thomas M. for the fix and the checks.
  • Radios: the window never listed the RTL-SDR, Airspy, BladeRF, LimeSDR, PlutoSDR and USRP radios that OnAir drives itself. It does now, and the libraries these radios need are included in the downloads. Not included: the PlutoSDR library on macOS, and the LimeSDR and USRP libraries on Windows.
  • Linux: one .deb installs on any current Debian or Ubuntu (tested on Ubuntu 22.04, 24.04 and 26.04 and Debian 12 and 13), because it carries its own video decoder. For other distributions there is a -portable.tar.gz: unpack it and run bin/onair.

New

  • Casting to Apple TV and AirPlay TVs on macOS (Stream tab, Outputs), and HLS streaming of any service to browsers and phones from the network tuner.
  • OnAir's own HackRF driver, sound output (Windows and Linux) and plots, with the old libraries kept as fallbacks.
  • ATSC: better weak-signal reception, and a faster receiver on Intel Linux (thanks to Flynn Joffray).
  • The source is split into smaller files, with ARCHITECTURE.md and CONTRIBUTING.md.

Still true: the HackRF is the radio OnAir is developed and tested with; the other radios are experimental and have had little real-world testing. An RTL-SDR can only receive DAB radio, not TV. Not code-signed: on macOS right-click the app and choose Open the first time; Windows shows an unknown-publisher warning. Please report problems in Issues.

OnAir 0.1.1 (pre-release)

@adswill adswill released this 04 Oct 09:56

OnAir 0.1.1 (pre-release). Fixes and speed-ups, mostly for Windows. Download the file for your system below; SHA256SUMS-0.1.1.txt has the checksums.

What is new

  • Windows: error correction runs on the graphics card (Direct3D 11), so live DVB-T2 keeps up without dropping samples on a laptop with a discrete GPU. Missing pictures are repaired on the GPU too. The receiver is faster, the window scales on high-resolution displays, the installer shows a publisher and adds shortcuts for all users, and unplugging a HackRF is noticed and the radio reconnects when you plug it back in.
  • All systems: fixed a freeze that could happen when switching services, fixed pictures staying late after switching services, fixed the picture timing on streams that report the wrong frame rate, and made picture repair much faster where Apple's model is not available.
  • ATSC: a much faster receiver on Intel/Linux machines, and notes for the Airspy (thanks to Flynn Joffray).
  • Auto compute mode now stays on a discrete GPU instead of switching to the CPU too early.

Install: macOS .dmg (right-click, Open the first time), Windows .exe installer or .zip (install the WinUSB driver for HackRF, RTL-SDR or Airspy with Zadig), Linux .deb or .tar.gz (x86-64 and arm64). Not code-signed.

Still true from 0.1.0: the HackRF is the radio OnAir is developed and tested with; direct drivers for RTL-SDR, Airspy, BladeRF, LimeSDR, PlutoSDR and USRP are experimental; ATSC and DAB have only been tested with synthetic signals. A HackRF on a poor USB port can drop samples: use a direct USB 3 port. Integrated Intel graphics are too slow for GPU error correction at full DVB-T2 speed, so OnAir keeps those on the CPU. Please report problems in Issues.

@adswill adswill released this 03 Oct 16:25

OnAir 0.1.0, first public pre-release (alpha). A DVB-T2 / DVB-T / ATSC / DAB receiver for HackRF and other software-defined radios.

Download the file for your system below. Verify with SHA256SUMS.txt if you like.

  • macOS (Apple silicon): OnAir-0.1.0-macos-arm64.dmg. Not signed with a developer certificate: right-click the app and choose Open the first time.
  • Windows (64-bit, needs a processor with AVX2): OnAir-0.1.0-windows-x64-setup.exe, or the .zip. Install the WinUSB driver once with Zadig for HackRF, RTL-SDR or Airspy. Not code-signed, so Windows will warn about an unknown publisher.
  • Linux (Debian/Ubuntu): onair_0.1.0_amd64.deb or _arm64.deb, or the .tar.gz.

What to expect. The HackRF is the radio OnAir is developed and tested with, on macOS and, lightly, on Windows. Direct drivers for RTL-SDR, Airspy, BladeRF, LimeSDR, PlutoSDR and USRP are experimental and have had little real-world testing. ATSC and DAB have only been tested with synthetic signals. On Windows, a HackRF on a poor USB port can drop samples: use a direct USB 3 port. Please report problems in Issues.
