BlitzTree 0.5.6

BlitzTree now updates itself. It checks GitHub for a new release once a day, downloads it in the background and installs it when you quit. Check for Updates… is in the BlitzTree menu. Updates are signed, and Full Disk Access carries over.

Also in this build (from 0.5.5): AI cleanup only runs when you click Clean up with Claude Code (or Codex). Nothing leaves your Mac until you click it.

Install

Requires Apple Silicon and macOS 14 or later. Download BlitzTree.dmg, open it, and drag BlitzTree into Applications. Grant Full Disk Access when prompted, then relaunch.

Coming from 0.5.5 or earlier: download this version once by hand. From here on it updates itself.

Updating from 0.5.2 or earlier: the new signature means macOS asks for Full Disk Access once more. In System Settings → Privacy & Security → Full Disk Access, remove the old BlitzTree row, add /Applications/BlitzTree.app, and relaunch.

AI cleanup now only runs when you click Clean up with Claude Code (or Codex). Before, the first scan after launch started your agent on its own, which sent folder paths and sizes (never file contents) to Anthropic or OpenAI without asking. Now the Clean Up panel opens on the button, and nothing leaves your Mac until you click it.

Install

Requires Apple Silicon and macOS 14 or later. Download BlitzTree.dmg, open it, and drag BlitzTree into Applications. Grant Full Disk Access when prompted, then relaunch.

Updating from 0.5.2 or earlier: the new signature means macOS asks for Full Disk Access once more. In System Settings → Privacy & Security → Full Disk Access, remove the old BlitzTree row, add /Applications/BlitzTree.app, and relaunch.

While "Delete for good" runs, the AI cleanup's size now counts down as each item finishes, instead of disappearing until the whole delete is done.

Install

Requires Apple Silicon and macOS 14 or later. Download BlitzTree.dmg, open it, and drag BlitzTree into Applications. Grant Full Disk Access when prompted, then relaunch.

BlitzTree is now signed with a Developer ID and notarized by Apple. It opens with a normal double-click: no more Open Anyway step.

  • AI cleanup can plan Xcode simulator runtimes and device data (through xcrun simctl) and the Codex app's chat folders in ~/Documents/Codex. Chats used in the last 2 days are kept.
  • Plan items and list selections light up on the treemap and rings even when their folder is drawn inside a combined "A ▸ B" box, and files light up too.
  • Clicking a plan card or Reclaimable row outside the zoomed folder zooms out to it.

Install

Requires Apple Silicon and macOS 14 or later. Download BlitzTree.dmg, open it, and drag BlitzTree into Applications. Grant Full Disk Access when prompted, then relaunch.

BlitzTree 0.5.2 halves scan memory, doubles treemap render speed, and adds a read-only JSON CLI.

  • About half the peak memory while scanning (e.g. 51 → 28 MB on /Applications, 144 → 75 MB on a 1.1M-item home folder), and the finished tree reaches the UI 3–4x sooner.
  • Treemap renders about 2x faster, and hovering redraws only what changed (17 → 0.2 ms per mouse move). Pixels are identical to 0.5.1.
  • Selecting a file inside a very large folder in the list is about 2x faster.
  • Optional read-only JSON CLI (blitztree scan, blitztree quick-wins), built from source with --features cli, sharing the Clean Up rules with the app. Contributed by @512banque.
  • Hard-linked files are credited to the same path on every scan, and incomplete subtrees are tracked.

Rust tests, CLI tests, rendering comparisons against 0.5.1 and full-tree dumps against the previous engine passed. Scan wall time is unchanged (it is bound by the kernel). Measurements.

Install

Requires Apple Silicon and macOS 14 or later. Download BlitzTree.dmg, open it, and drag BlitzTree into Applications, replacing the old copy. Quit and reopen BlitzTree after updating.

This build is not notarized. It uses the existing Apple Development signature. For a first installation, macOS may require System Settings → Privacy & Security → Open Anyway. Grant Full Disk Access when prompted, then relaunch.

v0.5.1

BlitzTree 0.5.1 improves rendering, scan memory use, and responsiveness after a scan.

  • Faster treemap and rings drawing, with much cheaper hover lookup on large trees.
  • About 16% lower peak memory in the measured applications scan, with identical results.
  • Shorter post-scan UI stalls and responsive progress while volume information loads.
  • Faster streamed cleanup plans and cleanup discovery.
  • Background manual Trash batches, duplicate-click protection, cancellation fixes, and persistent error reporting.

Release builds, Rust tests, rendering comparisons, offline agent/cleanup tests, and native UI checks passed. Performance measurements and limitations include the raw samples. Scan-throughput results remain inconclusive; complex Retina ring strokes have small bounded antialiasing differences.

New: AI cleanup. After the scan, your own Claude Code or Codex plans what can go, live in the Clean Up panel, while the treemap lights up those folders. You approve two steps: move to Trash, then delete for good. No agent? One click sets up Codex (free with a ChatGPT account) or Claude Code.

Download BlitzTree.dmg, drag to Applications. First launch: System Settings → Privacy & Security → Open Anyway (unnotarized build), then grant Full Disk Access and relaunch.
