A Cambria patch for reading on a phone: the reader's controls move to the bottom within reach of your thumb, panels swipe away, and books open faster on iPhone.

New

  • Phone reader controls at the bottom. On a phone, the reader's actions (contents, notes, reading mode, appearance, chat) sit in a toolbar at the bottom of the screen, as icons. The top bar keeps back, the title with the current chapter and percentage, and More. Arrange the toolbar in Settings → Customize → Reader toolbar (phone), separately from the desktop header.
  • Appearance and notes open from the bottom bar. Instead of a card floating over the page, the bar grows upward to hold them; pull it down, tap the page or press back to close it. Appearance leads with text size and page color swatches, with the font list and finer typography one tap away.
  • Swipe panels away. The contents and chat panels close with the iOS back swipe from the left edge, or by dragging them out the way they came.
  • Swipe a note left to delete it on touch, instead of a trash icon on every row.

Improved

  • Faster book opening on iPhone. Large books open markedly faster (a long biography went from about 1.3 s to 0.5 s on an iPhone 14 Pro), and the book chat panel no longer renders its whole history while hidden.
  • Reader controls appear at once. A tap on the page brought the controls up only after a quarter-second wait meant for mouse double-clicks; a touch now shows them immediately.
  • Reading progress on phones is the hairline along the top bar's edge; drag sideways anywhere across the bar to jump through the book.
  • Notes are easier to scan. The notes list uses the app's own type rather than the book's, with each highlight's color as a rule beside the passage.

Fixed

  • Status bar on iPhone hides while reading again; release builds could not reach the code that hides it.
  • Damaged MOBI files are reported as damaged copies ("try another copy") instead of as DRM-protected.
  • A book that fails to open now shows its error at once, instead of leaving the shelf frozen over the reader for three seconds first.
