v0.3.1- Terminal Error Watcher
Terminal Error Watcher
contextzip can now wrap your dev server and package a debug-ready ZIP
the moment you spot an error — no manual file hunting, no copy-pasting
stack traces.
contextzip watch -- npm run dev
contextzip watch -- python manage.py runserverRun your process through contextzip as usual. Output forwards normally.
When an error is detected, a prompt appears beneath it.
Press D. Your server keeps running. .contextzip/debug-context.zip is ready.
What's in the ZIP
| File | Contents |
|---|---|
prompt.txt |
Auto-generated: framework, error type, and task description — drop it straight into Claude, ChatGPT, or any AI tool |
terminal-error.txt |
Cleaned, noise-stripped error block and stack trace |
source-files.zip |
Source files referenced in the stack trace, paths preserved |
No --prompt flag needed. Since watch exists specifically to catch errors,
the intent is already known — contextzip writes the prompt for you.
Highlights
- Automatic error detection — recognises Python tracebacks, Django exceptions, Node.js runtime errors, Next.js compiler failures, webpack errors, and more
- Noise filtering — strips request logs, startup banners, HMR chatter, and pytest collection output so
terminal-error.txtcontains only what matters - Smart path extraction — pulls source files directly from stack frames, filters out stdlib and
node_modulespaths automatically - Error deduplication — hot reload re-emitting the same error on every save won't trigger repeated prompts
- Ctrl+C fallback — if no errors were packaged during the session, one final prompt offers to capture the full session output
- Supported frameworks — Python, Django, FastAPI, Node.js, Next.js, React
No new dependencies
watch uses only stdlib (subprocess, threading, termios/msvcrt) — nothing added to your environment.
Notes
Works best with dev servers that don't read stdin interactively. PTY emulation is not used — on Windows, color passthrough may be limited.
