@alanbimbati alanbimbati released this 02 Oct 16:27

Syncthing that finds your devices through Nostr relays. An early release: both apps work end to end between two devices, but have not been through real-world use yet.

Downloads

File For
nsync_0.3.0_amd64.deb Linux (Ubuntu 20.04+, Debian 11+, Pop!_OS, Mint). It carries its own Syncthing core, so nothing else is needed.
Nsync-0.3.0-arm64-v8a.apk Android 6.0+, most phones (smaller)
Nsync-0.3.0.apk Android 6.0+, any architecture
SHA256SUMS Checksums: sha256sum -c SHA256SUMS

Linux: sudo apt install ./nsync_0.3.0_amd64.deb, then open Nsync from the application menu (it opens http://127.0.0.1:8385).
Android: install the APK; it is a separate app (app.nsync) next to Syncthing-Fork, so do not run both at once.

The APKs are signed with a key whose SHA-256 fingerprint is
d487f6dbccdfbb72d1af0f09562713e4dcce68e7ca262bcc5f4d08f4b0ce5c11 (apksigner verify --print-certs).

What is in it

  • The Nsync name and logo replace Syncthing's; a strip on the main page says when this device's address was last published, to how many relays, and when the next update is due.
  • A panel that explains how discovery works, why the relays have to know your IP address and what they can see, with each relay's status, Refresh now, adding and removing relays, and an option to announce only your local-network address.
  • Six default relays, each tried and found to accept Nsync's events.
  • Pairing by QR code or by pasting a pairing string; the same on Android.
  • Syncthing v2.1.6 inside, unmodified.

Good to know

  • Announcements are not encrypted: a relay, or anyone reading it, sees the device's addresses and when it is online, under a key made for that device alone. This is no more than Syncthing's own discovery servers learn.
  • No NAT traversal: a device must be reachable on its Syncthing port (or be on the same network).
  • Not tested on a physical phone yet.
