Volume Control had several releases in the last weeks. If you are updating from 2.4.0 or earlier, these are the main changes since 2.3.2:

  • Liquid Glass HUD (2.4.0): on macOS 26 and later, the volume HUD looks like the system volume HUD, with the icon of the player it controls.
  • Control display volume (2.6.0, Lunar from 2.7.0): the volume keys change the volume of the speakers of most monitors and TVs, which macOS cannot change (it requires the free version of either BetterDisplay or Lunar to be installed).
  • Stay ahead of other apps (2.5.0): keeps the volume keys with Volume Control when another app, such as BetterDisplay or MonitorControl, takes them.
  • Copy Diagnostics (2.3.3 to 2.5.1): the report lists the apps that intercept the volume keys, shows whether the keys reach Volume Control, and no longer freezes when a player does not answer.
  • Fixes: holding ⌘ works on Macs where the volume key event arrived without it; Spotify's volume steps the same amount up and down; Option + volume key opens the Sound settings again; on a display without software volume control, the volume keys are passed on to macOS when no player is playing.

Added

  • Control display volume can use Lunar (its free version is enough) instead of BetterDisplay. The dialog lists BetterDisplay and Lunar, says whether each is installed and running, and lets you choose one; an app that is not installed cannot be chosen. Turn off "Listen for volume keys" in Lunar, so that only Volume Control handles the volume keys. While the option is on but the chosen app is not installed, not running, or handles the volume keys itself, the menu item shows ⚠️ and its tooltip gives the reason. Copy Diagnostics shows which app is used, and the state of both.

Changed

  • The alert that says BetterDisplay or Lunar is not running appears on each volume key press while the app is not running, instead of only the first time. It has a button that turns off Control display volume, and it suggests adding the app to the login items.
