Release list
Lightning 1.0.0-rc.27
Hide the side panel, file-level counts and search, a steadier list, a VPN switch, right-click menus and more.
- Side panel: hide it (asked first) and bring it back in Settings > Interface; a Filter menu keeps the filters reachable
- The side panel counts files, groups included; a filter or search lists the matching files and opens their groups; the up and down buttons mark the match
- The list no longer jumps while downloads run
- VPN: a labelled switch with a hint in the top bar; it also reaches downloads already running. On by default for new installs, existing installs keep their choice
- Right-click menus on groups, files inside groups and files still waiting
- The Name column divider follows the mouse; slow mode looks editable; the website under file names is off by default
Unsigned builds: right-click the app and choose Open the first time (macOS), or More info > Run anyway (Windows).

Lightning 1.0.0-rc.22
Kinder to slow disks, better file names, and the menu bar panel closes when you click elsewhere.
- Auto uses fewer streams when the disk cannot keep up and brings them back when it can; a connection held up by the disk is no longer treated as slow
- File names a server sends in the mail style (=?UTF-8?B?...?=) are decoded
- The panel under the menu bar icon closes when you click outside it
macOS (Apple Silicon) only for now. The app is unsigned: right-click it and choose Open the first time.

- Settings > Status bar > Menu bar icon chooses every part, or brings the menu back for a click
macOS (Apple Silicon) only for now. The app is unsigned: right-click it and choose Open the first time.

Lightning 1.0.0-rc.19
The menu behind the menu bar icon now shows live status.
- Total speed, each network with its connections, the running downloads (click one to open it) and the waiting, paused and failed counts
- Settings > Status bar > Menu bar icon chooses every part, how many downloads are listed, and the optional speed beside the icon
- Pause All and Resume All grey out when they have nothing to act on
- Check for Updates from that menu asks GitHub and says what it found
macOS (Apple Silicon) only for now. The app is unsigned: right-click it and choose Open the first time.

Lightning 1.0.0-rc.18
A live status bar menu, and an app that is easier on your computer.
- Click the count and speed in the status bar for a live menu: speed graph, totals, each network and its connections, the running downloads, the queue and the disk
- Settings > Status bar switches every item of the bar and every part of the menu
- When Lightning is behind other windows, minimized or hidden, its window gets progress far less often, so the CPU and fans are left alone; downloads are not slowed
macOS (Apple Silicon) only for now. The app is unsigned: right-click it and choose Open the first time.

Lightning 1.0.0-rc.17
Download later for several links, clearer DNS choices, and Auto DNS on resume.
- Several links: a Download later button; the group waits until you press its Start button
- Every DNS in the list says what it is; the DNS test only suggests a change worth making
- A resumed download on Auto DNS has its site tested too
macOS (Apple Silicon) only for now. The app is unsigned: right-click it and choose Open the first time.

Lightning 1.0.0-rc.16
Adds DNS testing and Auto DNS.
- Test DNS for this site: tries every DNS on a link, measures each distinct server, and suggests one
- Iranian DNSs in the list: Electro, Shecan, Begzar, 403 online, Radar
- A DNS that sends a site to a server with a bad certificate is flagged and never chosen
- Auto DNS: remembers the best DNS for each site and tests a new site in the background
- Turning the VPN option on is no longer treated as a network coming back
macOS (Apple Silicon) only for now. The app is unsigned: right-click it and choose Open the first time.

Lightning 1.0.0-rc.15
Fixes and polish on top of rc.14.
- Retry buttons on groups and on each failed file; the top bar button retries failures
- A link check now goes out on a real network, so a VPN cannot make it see a different file
- Auto groups give a returning network a file only after it has stayed up for 20 seconds
- Every dialog has a close button; Edit group has Cancel beside Done
- Hints sit on their buttons at any text size; queued files say Queued; running rows show just a bar
macOS (Apple Silicon) only for now. The app is unsigned: right-click it and choose Open the first time.

v1.0.0-rc.14
New in rc.14: Lightning now works with your browser, your schedule and sites that need a login.
New
- Browser extension for Chrome, Edge, Brave and Firefox. It hands downloads to Lightning along with the page and cookies they came from. Load the
extensionfolder (Settings → Browser → Open the extension folder) and paste the pairing key once. Lightning listens on this computer only and answers only the extension. - Schedule. Weekly run or pause windows, overnight ones too, each with an optional speed cap. Downloads wait in the queue outside a run window. Settings → Schedule.
- Sign-in, cookies and headers. Basic auth (or
user:pass@in the link), a Referer, cookies (paste them or import acookies.txt), a User-Agent and extra headers, per download. Credentials are never sent on to another host after a redirect and are encrypted on disk where the system keychain is available. - Checksums. Paste a SHA-256, SHA-1 or MD5 and the finished file is verified. A mismatch keeps the file and says so.
- When downloads finish. Optionally ask whether to quit, sleep or shut down (sleep and shutdown have a 60-second cancel), and choose per download to open the file or show it in its folder when done.
- Start at login, hidden in the tray, and offer to download links you copy (off by default).
macOS (Apple Silicon) only for now. The app is unsigned: right-click it and choose Open the first time.
