Release list
v0.4.1
- A clearer end of lesson. The summary is now a centred card with the lesson name, one square per exercise, how many you got right first time and the terms you learned. Below it: the next lesson by name, a new Repeat the lesson button and the way back to the level.
- Progress controls you can see. On Learn, Openings, Endgames and Positions, Sync or export is now a button and Clear progress a readable red link (still asks before deleting).
v0.4.0
Your progress can now follow you between browsers, if you want.
- Sync with a four-word code. On the new Your progress page (/en/your-progress, /es/tu-progreso) Cheesy gives you a code of four words. Type it in another browser and your progress syncs by itself. No accounts, email or passwords.
- Nothing to lose. Your progress stays in your browser too; syncing merges both sides and never inflates or drops what you did. Deleting a section reaches your other devices.
- Export and import your progress as a file, with or without a code.
- Your data. The server keeps a fingerprint of the code (never the code) and your progress, deletes accounts unused for 12 months, and lets you delete yours with a button. Details in About → If you sync with a code.
Served by Cloudflare Workers with D1.
v0.3.2
Cheesy is now served by Cloudflare Workers instead of Netlify. No visible changes: every address, redirect, header and 404 behaves as before (checked by the new edge-smoke battery on each deploy).
v0.3.1
Closes the search engine work of v0.3.0. Live at https://cheesy.alvarotc.com.
What is new
- Social cards per section and language. Openings, endgames, positions and learn pages share their own card, in Spanish or English, with its alt text.
- Opening descriptions in words. The search descriptions of the openings no longer use move notation: "With c3 White prepares d4…".
- Easier to read home board. The moves still to come on the home board have enough contrast, and their piece icons are dimmed again.
- Checked. Unlighthouse over every page: SEO 100, largest layout shift 0.035. Structured data validated with schema.org.
- Steadier tests. The tablebase tests no longer leave requests unanswered, so CI stops failing at random.
- Glossary screenshot alt matches the screenshot again.

v0.3.0
Cheesy can now be found in search engines. Every opening, endgame, position and lesson has its own page, with HTML generated at build time. Live at https://cheesy.alvarotc.com.
What is new
- Findable in search engines. Every opening, endgame, position and lesson has its own page, and the HTML is generated at build time (Angular prerender).
- Readable URLs in Spanish and English. Pages live under
/es/…and/en/…with readable names. The old addresses redirect to the new English ones, andplaycheesy.netlify.appredirects tocheesy.alvarotc.com. - Search metadata on every page. Each page has its title, description, canonical, hreflang, Open Graph and structured data (WebSite, BreadcrumbList, LearningResource). There is also a
sitemap.xml, arobots.txtand a real 404 page. Analysis, practice and puzzle pages stay out of the index. - New texts for endgames and positions. The 14 endgames and the 13 positions explain what it is, when it shows up and what to remember. In the positions the text is folded and does not give away the solution. The four categories have their own texts too.
- Breadcrumbs. Pages now show breadcrumbs.
- Positions show their name. The name of each position now appears on its page.

v0.2.0
Cheesy now teaches chess from zero. Learn is complete, with three levels, a glossary and real puzzles to practise. Live at https://cheesy.alvarotc.com.
What is new
- Learn chess from scratch. 36 lessons in three levels: 12 for beginners, 12 intermediate and 12 advanced. Beginners start with how the pieces move; intermediate covers tactics, mate patterns and basic endgames; advanced covers strategy, attack, defence and making a plan.
- A glossary of 89 terms. Every idea has a plain explanation, linked from the lessons that use it. Fork, pin, outpost, zugzwang and more, in Spanish and English.
- Practise more, with real puzzles. 550 puzzles from the Lichess puzzle database, 50 for each of the first 11 intermediate lessons. They come in batches of ten, from easiest to hardest, and Cheesy keeps count of the ones you solve on the first try.
- Moves in words. Moves are written out ("knight to f3") instead of notation, with a switch if you prefer standard notation.
- Play every board with the keyboard. Move a cursor over the squares, pick a piece and drop it, and a screen reader says what is on each square.
- Your progress still stays in your browser. No account, no backend, no cookies. You can delete it from the app at any time.
Checked by machine
Lesson positions are checked for legal moves with chessops, with Stockfish at depth 22, and against the Lichess tablebase for endgames.
Credits
The puzzles come from the Lichess puzzle database, released under CC0. Thank you to Lichess and its community.
v0.1.0
The first version of Cheesy: practise chess openings, endgames and tactics in your browser, with no account and nothing to install. Live at https://cheesy.alvarotc.com.
What is in it
- Openings. 21 openings. Play one against a rival that answers from the covered lines, or against Stockfish at five levels, with a theory panel that names the variation and tells you when you leave the lines. Practise a line from memory: only the move of the line is accepted, and a line is mastered after three runs in a row without mistakes.
- Endgames. 14 endgames to win or to hold for fifteen moves, against a rival that plays perfectly from the Lichess tablebase, with a panel that shows the theoretical verdict.
- Positions. 13 tactical positions. Find the winning move; the name and theme of each one stay hidden until you solve it.
- Analysis. A free board with a move tree and variations, an optional engine (evaluation bar, three best lines and an arrow), FEN and PGN import and export, and links that carry a position or a whole game.
- Your progress stays in your browser. Lines practised, endgames passed and positions solved are kept in IndexedDB. No backend, no account and no cookies.
- Spanish and English, light and dark following the system.
- Content checked by machine before it ships: legal moves with chessops, engine checks with Stockfish and endgame goals against the Lichess tablebase.
- Product images and README in Spanish and English, generated from the real app with
pnpm media.
