Are you running Windows, Which platform is this ? Let's get the basics out of the way
|
|
Because Gemini runs from your terminal, the key may already be configured there; BeanBot launches the Gemini CLI and does not have a separate API-key field. One common mismatch is PATH: BeanBot resolves harness binaries from the PATH available to NetBeans, and it still needs you to select a detected binary in the harness chooser. Check the executable path in the same environment that launches NetBeans: If you use API-key authentication, make sure References: BeanBot PATH and harness selection, Gemini CLI configuration. Which OS are you on? I can give you the exact NetBeans PATH steps. |

Windows 11, NB 31, Java 25 |
|
On Windows access to Gemini is thru a Node.js app. There is no Gemini executable. In one test I did find a way to alter the command line to gemini.cmd but the results were strange. In rebuilding NB it decided to keep me from correcting the command line. The problem is, and I’m guessing, is that when Java tries to execute an external process it will not run a script. The gemini.cmd runs in the DOS terminal and the PowerShell terminal. Where is the command line stored so I can edit it?

Shouldn't that be gemini.exe ? In your command prompt, before launching gemini, run "where gemini", and use that path as the path to the agent server binary. Also make sure the arguments have --acp and --model modelName as in the screenshot above, gemini doesn't allow the model to be changed after the session has commenced.

This works out of the box for me with gemini-cli 0.64.0, OpenJDK on Windows has implicit support for launching batch files through cmd.exe, we don't have to specify that explicitly Path: C:\Users\anand\AppData\Local\node\current\gemini.cmd The preferences are stored under the netbeans user directory, this is the path on my system, there is a key called acpExecutablePath I would suggest writing a small independent application that uses ProcessBuilder and executes the .cmd file, and see if that fails with the same error. |
|
By updating beanbot.properties executable by adding .cmd I no longer get the error. I also updated the processArguments. The Assistant comes up in NetBeans.

And then the end came. Gemini has informed me that I have used up my free quota for the day even though all I got it to do today is nothing. I asked it to “Write a method that displays the contents of a List in java” but all it does is tell me I finished my quota. Same result if I use the CLI tool. I used Google AI Studio to examine my usage and I hit 100%, though how is a mystery to me. I will now focus on Gemini to get a sense of what the Free Tier actually means.

Thank you for your help,

After numerous struggles I did manage to get each of the AI plugins to work, sort of. It came down to requiring a paid plan to do anything in Gemini, Claude, and even Hugging Face. I mistakenly believed that for light use a paid plan was not required but I was wrong.

Maybe I should start a GoFundMe page (this is a joke).

Kenneth,

Say something pleaseee.....

are the stack traces gone?

This is the madness with open source, one in every 300 users "say something" and still don't know why you get the "bad lib version errors" or the "stack traces"

TL;DR;
After an epic struggle I got an ASI Container up and running and anything I did such as type a request to “Write a method to display the contents of a List” generated a stack trace. I am interested in how someone with no previous experience working with an AI could get one to work in NetBeans. I am qualified for this task because I have no previous experience doing this. I did teach programming for 40 years and have written two books but none had anything to do with AI. I have brought up IntelliJ and used its AI, Junie, in just a few minutes. I expected with NB that, once installed, it could work in a similar manner. I will take the blame for this failure.

Here is the epic struggle:

Working with Windows 11, I have first deleted NetBeans along with all its folders in my user directory.

Using Java 25 openjdk 25.0.4.1 2026-08-18 LTS from Temurin

Npm and Gemini are loaded and appear to work from the command line although you did write that they were not required.

Reinstall NB 31 using the Zip file and not a Windows installer.

Run NetBeans and look at Tools->Plugin

My choices are Coding Assistant 1.20.4 and Anahata ASI Update Center 1.2.12

Other choices are Jeddict AI Assistant, AI Coder for NetBeans, and Claude Code GUI

First try is with Anahata – Install

Installation goes smoothly.

I use Help->Check for Updates and are shown Anahata ASI Update Center – NetBeans [1.2.12 -> 1/3/3]. I click on Next and after a few seconds it tells me I need to restart NB. I do.

When NB comes back up I go to Plugins and install Anahata ASI Studio – NetBeans now at version 1.3.3

Validation Warning:
Error: There were plugins, that were modified or damaged, installation cannot continue.

I then go in Installed tab of Plugins and uninstall User Installed Plugins that shows Anahata ASI Update Center Version 1.0. Then restart NB.

Going to Plugins after the restart the Available Plugins now only has 37 choices instead of the original 39 and Anahata is not on the list. Over on Installed there is a User Installed Plugin for Anahata. I now deactivate it and Uninstall it.

Reboot and now there are two Anahata, ASI Studio and ASI Update Center. Choosing either and doing an install gives me the same warning as before.

Tried installing both and now Modified/Damaged shows 2.

Start over and deleted NetBeans folders in my User directory. Started up NetBeans and Anahata was back in the list of Plugins. Went to the URL shown and navigated to the Netbeans Plugin Portal and downloaded 1.2.12.310, Back in NB I installed the downloaded Plugin.

Now I have AGI and ASI choices under Windows. As far as I can tell it wants me to talk to it because if I type I get numerous errors and it tells me I have a microphone.

Giving up for today.
