Release list
onbgm 0.1.0
The first public release of onbgm: instrumental background music written note by note by AI agents.
An agent writes a plain-text score (YAML). onbgm arranges, performs, mixes and masters it into a finished track, and reports back on loudness and part balance so the agent can revise.
brew install fluid-synth # Debian/Ubuntu: sudo apt install fluidsynth
uv tool install onbgm # or: pip install onbgm

Score format
- Sections with energy curves and chords written per bar.
- Melodies written note by note; drum patterns.
- Accompaniment textures: arpeggio, pad, comp, strum, bassline, groove and more.
- Meters 4/4, 3/4, 2/4, 6/8 and 12/8, including power chords.
- Per-section tempo changes and ritardandos (
onbgm fitderives tempo and structure from video cut points). - Swing, lo-fi coloring and sample-accurate seamless loops.
- A sound-effect timeline (risers, impacts, whooshes, UI tones) that stays in sync with the music.
Sound
- A built-in sampler that reads SFZ directly. It plays free and CC0 libraries: piano, strings, electric piano, guitars (acoustic, clean, distorted), bass, drum kits, vibraphone, marimba, harp, sax, zither, erhu, ukulele and accordion.
- A built-in synth.
- A GM fallback for everything (
--soundset gm).
Mixing
- Parts are leveled by role and the melody is balanced against each section's accompaniment, so the agent never has to mix.
- Edits stay local: changing one section leaves every other section bit-identical.
Agent interface
- Every command supports
--json. - Errors state the location, the reason and the fix.
- The skill docs live in
skills/onbgm/.
Review
onbgm reviewopens a browser player with a piano roll, A/B switching and timeline comments that the agent can act on.
Known limitations
- The agent-facing skill docs are in Chinese for now. Agents read them fine; an English translation is planned.
- On some Linux x86 CPUs, pedalboard ≤ 0.9.25 crashes with
Illegal instruction. onbgm detects this at startup and prints the commands for the fixed build. See the FAQ in the README.
