Release list
G1-Emu v0.1.0-alpha.9
G1-Emu v0.1.0-alpha.9
This pre-release removes the grit that heavy patches still had on first load. It is built and
DSP-tested in CI on Linux x86-64 (native and JUCE backends), Linux arm64, macOS universal and
Windows x86-64. The fix is in the emulation shared by every platform, and was checked on Linux.
What alpha.9 fixes
- Grit or noise on the first load of a heavy patch (#4,
WavetableSynth.pch), which went away
when the same patch was loaded a second time. The first DSP, the one that takes the audio
inputs, received its input words far more often than the real codec sends them, and the extra
work made it run out of time on patches that fill it. It now gets them at the codec's rate, and
the heavy patches tested (WavetableSynth, WavetablePad) lose no samples on any DSP, on the first
load or after others. The audio inputs work as before.
Also in this build (from alpha.5 to alpha.8)
- Heavy patches no longer turn into noise: the emulated DSPs charged two cycles for an instruction
the real chip does in one (alpha.8). - The emulator no longer stops answering after many uploads in a row (alpha.8).
- The synth's internal master clock runs (sequencers and clocked patches). Set the clock to
internal in the synth settings; in Animatek NME's Synth Settings dialog that option is shown
the wrong way round for now: choose External there. - Upload timeouts fixed: a deadlock after a DSP had been idle, commands to a busy DSP thrown away
or never taken. - The sawtooth of
OscA,OscBandOscSlvCsounds on every platform.

The two cables must remain separate. One shared loopback port can return a program's own output to
its input and make the traffic counters misleading.

G1-Emu v0.1.0-alpha.10
G1-Emu v0.1.0-alpha.10
This pre-release makes the emulator 50–70 % faster and halves its CPU use in real time, with
exactly the same sound. It is built and DSP-tested in CI on Linux x86-64 (native and JUCE backends),
Linux arm64, macOS universal and Windows x86-64. The changes are in the emulation shared by every
platform; they were measured on Linux.
What alpha.10 changes
- Faster. Measured over nine patches, from light to very heavy, the emulator now runs 2.5–3.3
times faster than real time where it ran 1.7–2.2 times: more headroom before a heavy patch
stutters, and room for slower computers. How:- the emulated CPU runs on while the four DSPs catch up, instead of waiting for them;
- when the CPU talks to one DSP, only that DSP has to be brought up to date, not all four;
- a DSP with little to do no longer emulates its idle waiting instruction by instruction;
- builds use link-time optimization.
- Lighter. In real time the emulator used over three CPU cores whatever the patch, because its
DSP threads kept spinning while waiting. They now sleep when there is nothing to do: about 1.7
cores on the same machine. - Same sound. Every change was checked against recordings of nine patches, which come out
byte-for-byte identical, and against a battery of all 109 module types.
Also in this build (from alpha.5 to alpha.9)
- Heavy patches no longer turn into noise or grit, on the first load or after others (alpha.8,
alpha.9). - The emulator no longer stops answering after many uploads in a row (alpha.8).

G1-Emu v0.1.0-alpha.8
G1-Emu v0.1.0-alpha.8
This pre-release fixes heavy patches that came out as noise. It is built and DSP-tested in CI on
Linux x86-64 (native and JUCE backends), Linux arm64, macOS universal and Windows x86-64. Both fixes
are in the emulation shared by every platform, and were checked on Linux.
What alpha.8 fixes
- Heavy patches sounding like noise or distortion (#4,
WavetableSynth.pch). It was not the
computer being too slow: the emulated DSPs believed some instructions took twice as long as on
the real chip. The Nord Modular's OS packs each DSP with as many voices as fit in its time per
sample, so a full DSP ran over, lost samples and turned the sound into noise. Such patches now
keep their pitch and sound as they should. - The emulator stopped answering after many uploads in a row (upload timeouts, then silence
to everything). A stale piece of translated DSP code was reused after the OS had moved a loop.
Known issue
On the first DSP one input-related interrupt still runs more often than on the hardware, which can
leave a little grit on the very heaviest patches. It is being worked on; reports with the patch
attached help a lot.
Also in this build (from alpha.5 to alpha.7)
- The synth's internal master clock runs (sequencers and clocked patches). Set the clock to
internal in the synth settings; in Animatek NME's Synth Settings dialog that option is shown

G1-Emu v0.1.0-alpha.7
G1-Emu v0.1.0-alpha.7
This pre-release makes the synth's internal master clock run. Patches driven by it (anything
that takes MIDIGlobal's clock: sequencers, arpeggios, patches synced to the synth's tempo) were
silent. It is built and DSP-tested in CI on Linux x86-64 (native and JUCE backends), Linux arm64,
macOS universal and Windows x86-64. The fix was found by comparing recordings of a real Nord
Modular with the emulator, and checked on Linux; it is in the emulation shared by every platform.
What alpha.7 fixes
- The internal master clock. The emulated G1 never started it, so MIDIGlobal's clock and sync
outputs stood still and every patch clocked by them stayed silent. A sequencer patch of 110
modules that is loud on a real G1 now sounds the same in the emulator.
One setting to check
The master clock also has to be set to internal in the synth settings, and a new G1-Emu flash
comes up set to external (waiting for MIDI clock). If a clocked patch is still silent, set the
clock to internal from your editor's synth settings, or send MIDI clock to the MIDI port.
With Animatek NME up to now, the Synth Settings dialog shows this option the wrong way round:
choose External there to get the internal clock, until NME is fixed.
Also in this build (from alpha.5 and alpha.6)
- Upload timeouts fixed: a deadlock after a DSP had been idle, commands to a busy DSP thrown away
or never taken. - The sawtooth of
OscA,OscBandOscSlvCsounds on every platform. - With
G1_MIDI_LOG=1the JUCE MIDI backend (macOS and Windows) reports a truncated SysEx.

G1-Emu v0.1.0-alpha.6
G1-Emu v0.1.0-alpha.6
This pre-release fixes an upload timeout that alpha.5 still had with heavier patches. It is
built and DSP-tested in CI on Linux x86-64 (native and JUCE backends), Linux arm64, macOS universal
and Windows x86-64. The fix was found and verified on Linux, with the patch attached to
issue #4; it is in the DSP emulation shared by every
platform, but has not been tried on a real Mac or Windows machine yet. If uploads still time out
for you, please say so on #4 or issue #3 with the
patch attached.
What alpha.6 fixes
- Uploads of patches that keep a DSP busy. When a patch fills a DSP's time, the emulated DSP
never got round to the editor's commands, so the last packet of the upload was never
acknowledged and the editor reportedUpload timeout at packet N. The patch from #4 now uploads
completely, like the 71 sample patches used for testing.
Also in this build (from alpha.5)
- Two other upload timeouts fixed: a deadlock after a DSP had been idle for a long time, and a
command to a busy DSP being thrown away. - The sawtooth of
OscA,OscBandOscSlvCsounds again on every platform. - With
G1_MIDI_LOG=1the JUCE MIDI backend (macOS and Windows) reports a SysEx that reached it
truncated.

G1-Emu v0.1.0-alpha.5
G1-Emu v0.1.0-alpha.5
This pre-release fixes patch uploads that timed out and oscillators whose sawtooth was silent.
It is built and DSP-tested in CI on Linux x86-64 (native and JUCE backends), Linux arm64, macOS
universal and Windows x86-64. The fixes were found and verified on Linux; they are in the DSP and
68k emulation shared by every platform, but they have not been tried on a real Mac or Windows
machine yet. If uploads still time out for you, please say so on
issue #3 or
issue #4 with the patch attached.
What alpha.5 fixes
- Uploads that timed out. Two emulator bugs ended as
Upload timeout at packet Nin the
editor. A DSP that had been idle for a long time could deadlock the emulator when it woke up, and
a command to a DSP with a full sample routine was thrown away, so the last packet of some patches
was never acknowledged. Every one of 71 sample patches now uploads; one of them that failed
before is accepted by a real Nord Modular too. - The sawtooth.
OscAandOscBon the saw waveform, and the sawtooth slaveOscSlvC, gave
a constant level instead of a wave, on every platform. It was a bug in the DSP emulator's
just-in-time compiler, not in the patch: they now sound like the other waveforms. - The upload log. With
G1_MIDI_LOG=1the JUCE MIDI backend (macOS and Windows) also reports a
SysEx that reached it truncated, which helps tell a MIDI problem from an emulator one. - On Windows, the ROM folder falls back to
%USERPROFILE%whenHOMEis not set.

G1-Emu v0.1.0-alpha.4
G1-Emu v0.1.0-alpha.4
This is the first pre-release verified end to end on Linux, macOS and Windows. The same tag is
built and DSP-tested in CI on Linux x86-64 (native and JUCE backends), Linux arm64, macOS universal
and Windows x86-64. The window, audio and Animatek NME handshake have now also been exercised on
real macOS and Windows machines; macOS has additionally completed patch uploads.
What alpha.4 adds
- Windows can manually pair each half of the PC Port and regular MIDI port with an existing
system MIDI device. This is the practical bridge to loopMIDI while Microsoft issue #1047 blocks
G1-Emu's application-owned Windows MIDI endpoints. - The Windows ZIP includes
WINDOWS.md, a complete first-run guide: install loopMIDI, create the
two directional cables, configure G1-Emu and NME, restart after device changes, upload a patch
and diagnose a timeout from the byte counters. - Windows settings and flash now use
%APPDATA%\Animatek\G1-Emuinstead of accidentally following
the process's working directory. Opening the same executable from Explorer and a terminal no
longer creates two unrelated configurations. - The Windows audio settings list the real JUCE device types and devices, including WASAPI,
DirectSound and installed ASIO drivers. - The JUCE MIDI backend preserves fragmented SysEx replies, so NME receives the complete handshake
and larger PC Port messages.

G1-Emu v0.1.0-alpha.3
G1-Emu v0.1.0-alpha.3
This is a pre-alpha test build. Everything here compiles and passes the DSP tests on Linux
(x86-64 and arm64), macOS and Windows in CI. This release also includes the fixes found during the
first run on a real Mac: an Intel MacBook Pro with macOS 13.7.8 now opens CoreAudio, starts the
window, publishes both CoreMIDI ports and connects to NME over the PC Port.
What alpha.3 fixes
- CoreAudio no longer hangs when the default input and output are two different devices, as they
are for the built-in microphone and output on Intel Macs. G1-Emu uses output only in that case. g1gui.shstarts the executable inside the macOS.appbundle.- The JUCE MIDI backend keeps incomplete messages between calls. PC Port SysEx replies are no
longer sent early and truncated; NME's handshake now receives all 12 bytes and connects.
It brings no ROM, and it never will
G1-Emu emulates the hardware, not Clavia's software. You need a Nord Modular rack OS 3.03 ROM
image of your own (512 KB). The program looks for one when it starts and tells you where to put
it; the README explains the search order. Without a ROM it will not run, and that is by design.
It also starts empty. The ROM carries the operating system and nothing else, so every slot
says Empty patch. To make a sound you need a patch, and to make a patch you need an editor
talking to the emulator over the PC Port — any editor that speaks the G1's protocol.

What we expect on each system, and what to report
| Audio | Virtual MIDI ports | Confidence | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Linux | JACK/PipeWire or ALSA | ALSA sequencer | used daily |
| macOS | CoreAudio | CoreMIDI, nothing to install | verified on Intel, macOS 13.7.8 |
| Windows | WASAPI/ASIO | only with Windows MIDI Services | the real unknown |
The macOS build is a universal binary (Apple Silicon and Intel) and needs macOS 11 Big Sur or
newer. The Intel half has been run on macOS 13.7.8 and connects to NME. Apple Silicon compiles
and passes the DSP test in CI, but a report from a real Apple Silicon Mac is still welcome.
On Windows, JUCE can only create a virtual port through Windows MIDI Services; with the older
WinRT or WinMM backends it cannot, and the status line will say so plainly. If that happens the
emulator still runs and makes sound, but no editor can reach it. Tell us what the status line
says — that answer is worth as much to us as a success.
Useful reports: whether the window opens, whether the audio device is found and sounds, whether an
editor and a DAW see G1-Emu PC Port and G1-Emu MIDI, and whatever the status bar says.
Open an issue with the system, its version, and the log the program prints at startup.

Windows builds on real hardware. That is exactly what we are asking for.

says Empty patch. To make a sound you need a patch, and to make a patch you need an editor
talking to the emulator over the PC Port — any editor that speaks the G1's protocol.

- macOS: Gatekeeper will say the developer is unidentified. Right-click the app and choose
Open, or runxattr -dr com.apple.quarantine G1-Emu.app. - Windows: SmartScreen will warn. "More info" then "Run anyway".
Signing and notarisation are a job of their own and are not done yet.
What we expect on each system, and what to report
| Audio | Virtual MIDI ports | Confidence | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Linux | JACK/PipeWire or ALSA | ALSA sequencer | used daily |
| macOS | CoreAudio | CoreMIDI, nothing to install | should work, never run |
| Windows | WASAPI/ASIO | only with Windows MIDI Services | the real unknown |
The macOS build is a universal binary (Apple Silicon and Intel) and needs macOS 11 Big Sur or
newer. The Apple Silicon half is what CI compiles and tests; the Intel half is built from the
same source and has never been run, so a report from an Intel Mac is especially welcome.

G1-Emu is the window with the panel; g1run is the same emulator in a console. The licence and
the README travel inside each archive.
GPLv3, because it links Gearmulator. The source of this build is the tag this release points at.
G1-Emu v0.1.0-alpha.1
The macOS build in this release was replaced on 2026-09-21 with the universal one from v0.1.0-alpha.2.
What was here first was arm64 only and declared a minimum of macOS 26, so it would not start on anything older — Ventura included, Apple Silicon or not. The file now attached is the same universal binary as alpha.2: Apple Silicon and Intel, macOS 11 and up. Everything else in this release is unchanged; alpha.2 is the one to prefer.
This is a pre-alpha test build, and its only job is to tell us whether the emulator runs on a
machine that is not the developer's. Everything here compiles and passes the DSP tests on Linux
(x86-64 and arm64), macOS (Apple Silicon) and Windows in CI, but nobody has yet run the macOS or
Windows builds on real hardware. That is exactly what we are asking for.
