GitHub Repository Connector for claude.ai Web (Non-Engineer Power Users)

Problem Statement

Non-engineer power users managing large structured document systems — schemas, ADRs, governance registries — cannot connect Claude.ai web to a GitHub repository. Every session requires manual document uploads, Claude works from stale snapshots, and cross-document consistency checks are error-prone and time-consuming. Claude Code and terminal-based MCP setup are not viable options for this user profile. ChatGPT currently solves this with a built-in GitHub app connector requiring no technical configuration.

Proposed Solution

The specific capability I am requesting:
A native GitHub connector for claude.ai web (equivalent to the existing Gmail and Google Calendar connectors) that allows Claude to read file contents from connected repositories in real time during a conversation — without requiring uploads, without requiring Claude Code or terminal access, and without requiring a developer to configure a custom MCP server.

The impact this would have for my use case:
• Claude could fetch the current canonical schema files at the start of each session with no manual input
• Cross-reference checks ("which files reference scopeType?") would run against live files rather than uploaded snapshots
• The Definition-First governance workflow — where an ADR change must propagate consistently to all downstream documents — becomes verifiable rather than manual
• Session setup time drops from 15-20 minutes of document management to zero

This is not a developer workflow request. It is a structured knowledge management and governance workflow request from a non-engineer power user. The GitHub connector gap is the primary reason a direct competitor's product is currently more capable for this specific, high-value use case.

@jjpTell I was running into the same problem today and figured out a workaround. The limitation appears to be that GitHub does not support Dynamic Client Registration for their MCP server. The long-term fix would likely be for Claude to register their own Oauth app, which could then be used for authentication to the GitHub remote HTTP server into the future for ease. However, in the mean time, I was able to create an OAuth application under my personal GitHub account and provide its Client ID/Secret to the MCP configuration within Claude and got it connected! I believe at an organization level, the workaround would look like:

• Someone with Admin rights in the GitHub organization creates an OAuth App.
• Someone with Admin rights in the Claude organization adds a custom connector for the organization, using the standard github copilot MCP URL and the client ID/Secret of the app
• From that point on, anyone in the org can use that connector and Authenticate with their own account. This doesn't seem to provide anyone using this method with additional data or access they otherwise would not, the app is just acting as a facilitator of the authentication in this scenario.

I don't work with OAuth terribly often, so I would say do your own testing and research to make sure this solution is secure and works for your environment/use-case.

@TheMackey - Were you able to get private repos working with your workaround? It seems like Claude.ai is not requesting the repo scope to access private repos when connecting to the GitHub MCP Connector.

@praveenweb Yes, but I had to first accept/install the app within the repo's I wanted to access this way. What I ended up doing was creating the app under the context of the organization (so it is owned by the Organization as the developer) and then installing it in a test repo. I then used that app's ID/Secret when configuring the MCP in Claude and it was able to read the contents :)

Two more notes:

• This also appears to work with a GitHub app as well. With that method, you can choose which permissions you want at the app level, which means you can restrict what the MCP server is allowed to do. So even if the MCP publishes tools that an organization would be hesitant to accept, the organization can use a GitHub app instead of an OAuth app in order to restrict usage. The tools that would use denied permissions seem to just fail.
• Since I posted the workaround above, it looks like Anthropic published their own OAuth app which Claude will use by default if not given any overriding credentials. I have not tested it out, but I would assume there is probably some way to install that app in an organization/repo as well instead of publishing your own - but if you are an org who wants to limit what can be done through the GitHub MCP, you'll still want to publish your own private GitHub app and use that as described above.

Thanks for the detailed write-up on your workflow. GitHub maintains an official remote MCP server that you can add to claude.ai as a custom connector. See https://github.com/github/github-mcp-server for setup details. It uses OAuth and exposes repository, file, issue, and pull request tools.

If the official server does not cover your use case, the most effective path is to file a feature request with GitHub so it reaches the team that maintains the server.
