Escape key to interrupt response not working in some sessions #14526

Description

@Latigid-Sam

Description

The Escape key to interrupt Claude's response does not work consistently across sessions. The UI shows "Esc to interrupt" during the thinking/response phase, but pressing Escape has no effect in some sessions while working correctly in others.

Steps to Reproduce

  1. Start a Claude Code session
  2. Ask Claude a question that triggers a lengthy response
  3. While Claude is responding (thinking indicator shows "Esc to interrupt"), press Escape
  4. Expected: Response stops immediately
  5. Actual: In some sessions, nothing happens - Escape is ignored

Environment

  • Platform: macOS (Darwin 25.1.0)
  • The issue appears session-specific - Escape works in some threads but not others within the same terminal

Workaround

Using Ctrl+C successfully interrupts the response, but this is inconsistent with the UI hint showing "Esc to interrupt".

Additional Context

User reported that double-Escape (for rewind) also did not trigger, suggesting Escape key events may not be reaching Claude Code in affected sessions.
