# Bedrock Cross-Region Inference Profile Returns 404 "Model use case details" Error

## Description

Claude Code fails to invoke Bedrock models using cross-region inference profiles, returning a 404 error about "Model use case details", even though the same model works correctly via AWS CLI and other tools (Aider and Eh-I-DeCoder).

## Steps to Reproduce

1. Configure AWS credentials with Bedrock invoke permissions
2. Run Claude Code with Bedrock and cross-region inference profile:

Suspected Cause

Claude Code may be:

1. Not properly handling cross-region inference profile IDs (with us. or global. prefix)
2. Making an incorrect API call that doesn't use the Bedrock runtime invoke endpoint
3. Attempting to validate the model ID against a different endpoint that returns this error

Suspected Root Cause

Claude Code appears to be making a different type of API call than the standard AWS CLI/SDK InvokeModel operation. Possibilities:

1. Different API endpoint: Claude Code may be hitting a model validation or metadata endpoint before invoking, which requires additional permissions
2. SDK vs CLI difference: The boto3 SDK (which Claude Code likely uses) may make additional pre-flight checks that the CLI doesn't
3. Request header differences: Missing or incorrect headers in the SDK request that are handled automatically by the CLI

Workaround That Doesn't Work

Using regional profiles instead of global ones also fails:

Root Cause Analysis

The error message provides a critical clue:

404 Model use case details have not been submitted for this account

This specific error comes from the Bedrock control plane APIs (bedrock service), NOT the runtime APIs (bedrock-runtime service).

Claude Code appears to be making unnecessary validation calls before invoking the model:

Claude Code likely has special handling for global.* and us.* prefixed inference profiles that triggers unnecessary validation calls, while regional profiles (au.*, apac.*) may bypass this validation.

I have resolved the problem. My .aws/credentials had a "[default]" profile for a different account. This was trying to cross account access the bedrock system. I commented out the default aws credentials account and it now works.
