[DOCS] Claude Code attachments docs missing size limits (100 pages, 20MB) #22956

Description

@coygeek

Documentation Type

Missing documentation (feature not documented)

Documentation Location

https://code.claude.com/docs/en/vs-code

Section/Topic

Use the prompt box / Reference files and folders (attachments guidance)

Current Documentation

The docs mention attaching files but do not state any limits. For example:

Options include attaching files, switching models, toggling extended thinking

What's Wrong or Missing?

Claude Code now surfaces the actual limits for PDF/request size errors (100 pages, 20MB) in its error messaging, but the documentation never states these limits. Users only learn about limits after a failure and lack guidance on how to avoid it.

Suggested Improvement

Add a short "Attachment limits" note near the attachment guidance on both the VS Code and IDE integrations pages. Suggested content:

  • PDF limit: 100 pages per attachment
  • Request size limit: 20MB total request size
  • If a PDF exceeds these limits, split it or attach fewer pages/files

If there is (or should be) a central attachments/file-input page, put the limits there and link to it from these pages.

Impact

Medium - Makes feature difficult to understand
