Extra usage enabled automatically without user consent, exceeded $50 spending limit #25647

Description

@anton-abyzov

Summary

The "Extra usage" option on claude.ai was automatically enabled without my explicit consent, resulting in charges exceeding my configured $50 monthly spending limit. I was charged $74.99 (150% of the limit), leaving a negative balance of -$15.92.

What happened

  1. I have a Claude Pro subscription with a $50 monthly spending limit configured for extra usage
  2. I had previously disabled the extra usage toggle — I never opted in to overages
  3. After a recent update (possibly around early-mid February 2026), the extra usage toggle was automatically re-enabled without any notification or consent
  4. As a result, $74.99 was charged against the $50 limit (150% usage), creating a -$15.92 balance
  5. I discovered this only by checking my usage dashboard manually

Expected behavior

  • The extra usage toggle should never be enabled automatically
  • If the toggle state changes due to an update or migration, users should be explicitly notified
  • Charges should not exceed the configured spending limit without clear user acknowledgment
  • The system should require explicit opt-in for any spending beyond the subscription price

Actual behavior

  • Extra usage was silently enabled (or re-enabled after being turned off)
  • $74.99 was charged against a $50 limit with no warning
  • No notification was sent about the toggle being enabled or the limit being exceeded

Context

  • This occurred during the half-price promotion period (ending ~Feb 16, 2026)
  • The toggle is currently shown as OFF in the dashboard
  • Auto-reload is OFF
  • It is unclear whether the promotion/update triggered the toggle reset

Screenshot

The usage dashboard shows:

  • Extra usage: $74.99 spent (150% used)
  • Monthly spending limit: $50
  • Current balance: -$15.92
  • Auto-reload: off
  • Toggle: off (currently)

Impact

This is a billing/consent concern. Users should have full control over when extra charges can be incurred. Silently enabling a spending feature — especially one with real-dollar implications — undermines trust.

Environment

  • Platform: claude.ai (web dashboard)
  • Subscription: Claude Pro
  • Date discovered: February 13, 2026
