I'm experiencing the same issue on Ubuntu 24.04.4 LTS.
time result:

time claude update
Current version: 2.1.63
Checking for updates to latest version...
Claude Code is up to date (2.1.63)

real	1m4.391s
user	0m11.661s
sys	0m8.022s

I had initially thought that was tied to the legacy installer, so I ran uninstall and re-installed Claude Code, but this hasn't helped - the update check still takes around a minute.
