Hello. I am currently using Claude Code via the macOS iTerm2 terminal app with a 'Claude Max Account' subscription.

I recently confirmed that Anthropic updated the Claude Opus 4.6 and Sonnet 4.6 models to natively support 1M context windows.

However, when I check the context window using the /context command, it still appears as 200K on my device.
(For reference, it shows 1M on other devices.)

Is there a solution for this? Or is this an undiscovered bug?

What Claude Actually Did

After running Claude Code, I ran the /model command to check 1M context window support, selected the opus 4.6 model, and then ran the /context command to check the context window.

Expected Behavior

In Claude Code, 1M context window support for Opus 4.6, Sonnet 4.6, and furthermore 'opusplan' models should be displayed correctly when using the /context command.

Found a workaround via #34435:

Set the environment variable:

ANTHROPIC_DEFAULT_OPUS_MODEL=claude-opus-4-6[1m]

Or add it to ~/.claude/settings.json:

Both approaches work. The original question remains — shouldn't this be the default for Max subscribers?

Verification attempts

There is no straightforward way to check the context window size outside of /context. We tried several approaches, none of which surfaced the information:

• claude config list — no context window or plan info exposed
• claude --version — returns version only (2.1.77), no model metadata
• claude --help — no flag for inspecting context window or account details
• ~/.claude.json — thoroughly reviewed; contains auth fields (oauthAccount, billingType: "stripe_subscription"), migration flags (opusProMigrationComplete, sonnet1m45MigrationComplete), but nothing about context window size or plan tier (Max/Pro/etc.)
• /model — shows model name and effort level, but not context window
• API model endpoint (GET /v1/models/claude-opus-4-6) — requires a separate API key; Claude Code's OAuth auth can't be reused for this
• claude -d api -p "..." — debug output doesn't surface context window metadata in responses

Agree this should be the default for Max subscribers without needing the ANTHROPIC_DEFAULT_OPUS_MODEL=claude-opus-4-6[1m] workaround.
