[BUG] Auto-updater silently broke Claude Code on macOS 11 Big Sur

What's Wrong?

Claude Code's auto-updater silently upgraded to 2.1.104, which bundles a native Bun binary compiled for macOS 13+. On macOS 11, this binary crashes immediately on launch due to a missing symbol in the system ICU library. Claude Code is completely unusable after the update. The auto-updater applied the breaking change with no OS compatibility check and no warning.

What Should Happen?

The auto-updater should verify OS compatibility before applying an update and refuse or warn if the new version requires a newer OS. The minimum supported macOS version should be documented. Users should receive advance notice before OS support is dropped — not discover it when their tool silently stops working.

Update: Auto-Update Prevention Required (2026-04-18)

Confirming version 2.1.3 still works on macOS 11.7.10 Big Sur.

Critical Finding: CLAUDE_NO_AUTO_UPDATE=1 Does NOT Work

Despite setting export CLAUDE_NO_AUTO_UPDATE=1 in my shell configuration, Claude Code auto-updated itself again overnight (from 2.1.3 → 2.1.114), breaking the installation for the 4th time.

Reliable Fix: Lock Directory Read-Only

The only method that prevents auto-updates is making the installation directory read-only:

chmod -R a-w ~/.nvm/versions/node/v18.20.8/lib/node_modules/@anthropic-ai/claude-code/

# Verify lock (should show dr-xr-xr-x)

This physically prevents the auto-updater from writing new files.

Working patch for macOS 11 Big Sur — running 2.1.114 successfully

I managed to get Claude Code 2.1.114 running on macOS 11.7.10 (iMac 2014). The fix involves three patches:

1. Patch the Mach-O minos field from 13.0 → 11.0 using install_name_tool and a Python script
2. Build an ICU shim library, assembly jump stubs that redirect 169 unversioned ICU symbols to Homebrew ICU's versioned equivalents (e.g., _ubrk_clone → _ubrk_clone_77)
3. Build a C++ shim library — provides missing libc++ template instantiations (stringbuf, stringstream, etc.)
4. Launch with DYLD_FORCE_FLAT_NAMESPACE=1 to bypass two-level namespace binding

This is a workaround, Anthropic should still ship a macOS 11-compatible binary or at minimum check OS version before auto-updating.
