[Feature Request] Option to disable Enter key sending messages (use Shift+Enter or Ctrl+Enter instead) #54433

Description

@sshahade

Preflight Checklist

  • I have searched existing requests and this feature hasn't been requested yet
  • This is a single feature request (not multiple features)

Problem Statement

Currently, pressing Enter in the claude.ai chat interface immediately sends the message. There is no built-in setting to change this behavior. For users who write longer, multi-line prompts, this is a significant friction point — it's easy to accidentally submit an incomplete message mid-thought.

Proposed Solution

Add a toggle in Settings that lets users choose their preferred send behavior:

Enter = new line, Ctrl+Enter or Shift+Enter = send (new option)
Enter = send (current default)

This is a standard UX pattern offered by tools like Slack, Notion, and Linear.

Priority

High - Significant impact on productivity

Feature Category

Interactive mode (TUI)

Use Case Example

Additional Context

Why This Matters

Power users who write detailed, structured prompts are disproportionately affected
Accidental sends are disruptive and break flow
Third-party Chrome extensions already exist to work around this, indicating real demand
Multiple GitHub issues (#729, #2054, #14688, #26303) have been opened on this topic — consolidating into a proper feature request

Workarounds (current)

Use Shift+Enter for new lines (not intuitive)
Install a third-party Chrome extension

Neither is acceptable as a long-term solution. This should be a native setting.
